Description

With more than three decades in the garden industry, Paul Zimmerman explores the passion that connects gardeners around the world with those who also live it. Drawing on years of travel, conversations with growers and garden makers, and countless visits to gardens across continents, Paul looks beyond the “how-to” and dives into the deeper questions — why do we garden, what’s changing in the gardening world, and what does it reveal about who we are?

Amy Tipton’s Garden

Amy Tipton’s Garden

2025-05-1209:51

In 2021 I designed and supervised the build of a garden for Amy Tipton. The garden was a dream of hers and it was my delight to make it happen. I visit the garden and Amy four years later.
Arnaud Delbard is just the 3rd generation to run the Delbard Nursery. Delbard roses are also among my favorite roses I've ever grown. I sit down with Arnaud to discuss the family history, the breeding program and of course, the roses. Part 1 - What is a Delbard Rose Part 2 at 7:14 - The Breeding Program Part 3 at 24:00 - History of The Company and The Family Part 4 at 40:05 - The Roses Themselves and how The Painter Series came about.
I recently sat down with my friend Michael Marriott for a wide ranging discussion on all things roses. This is part 2, and besides myth busting we also get into care tips and other topics. If you haven't seen part 1 yet that's okay. They are not in sequence so you can watch this one and then go watch part 1. Like part 1 I broke this into sections so you can watch it all or in parts. You can even jump around as the sections are time stamped below. Enjoy! 1:32 Myth 1 - Planting the bud union above the ground 4:47 Myth 2 - Trim the roots before planting a bareroot rose 6:17 Myth 3 - Plant far apart for air circulation 11:33 Myth 4- Don’t plant other plants with roses 19:58 Myth 5 - Prune all roses to the same height 24:16 Myth 6 - Prune to an outward facing bud eye 27:11 Myth 7 - Prune at a 45 degree angle 30:02 Myth 8 - You can only trim roses during “pruning season” 31:23 Pruning Tip - Pruning once flowering roses 32:21 Pruning Tip - Cut out old canes to spur new ones. 34:36 Pruning Tip - Should you prune young roses? 36:44 Myth 9 - You should never allow disease on your roses 39:36 Care Tip - The importance of mulch to soil health 42:56 Myth 10 - Don’t plant a rose where another rose has been 45:14 Care Tip - What to do with an unhealthy rose 46:30 Care Tip - Good horticultural practices help with disease control 48:19 Myths 11 & 12 - Bone meal and Epsom salts 49:42 Care Tip - A discussion on insects 50:42 Care Tip - Thoughts on Japanese Beetles 53:09 Care Tip - Attracting beneficial insects to your garden 54:56 The importance of keeping nature’s balance 57:04 Conclusion - Why everyone should grow roses
With roses there always seems to be lots of "rules" you should follow. But it is necessary to follow all of them? In this episode we ask, and try to answer, that very question. Michael Marriott has made roses his profession for close to 40 years including 35 years at David Austin Roses in the UK. He has traveled all over the world talking about roses, designing gardens and being an ambassador for common sense rose growing. This episode is Part 1 of our conversation. It's broken down into topics to make it easier to start and stop, so you can view the whole episode over time. The list below has the topics and the time mark in minutes:seconds where each topic begins. Feel free to share this video everywhere. That's why I make them! 1:36 - Meet Michael & His Work on a 35 year old neglected garden next door. 7:46 - Michael's horticultural background. 11:06 - A passion for roses including his time at David Austin Roses. 21:52 - Life after David Austin Roses. 24:38 - Myth 1. We should only grow repeat flowering roses. 33:28 - Support our small nurseries. 36:07 - Myth 2. Only old roses have fragrance & ramblers crash the conversation. 41:45 - Myth 3. Own root vs grafted. One is better. 49:27 - Myth 4. The "perfect" rose has a high pointed center.
Raising Funds for Rose Rosette Research https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/raising-funds-for-rrd-research There is a lot of information, and misinformation, about Rose Rosette Disease. I held a discussion with Dr David Byrne, Dr Kevin Ong and Dr Mark Windham to talk about RRD. We talked about it's history, what spreads it, what does it look like, tips to prevent it and what to do if you get it. We also answered questions provided to us by gardeners like you. The research they do is generally funded by grants. This year, (2020) they did not get the grant so we have set up a Charity Go Fund Me Page to help fund their research. In cooperation with the AGRS™ (American Garden Rose Selections™), a Charity Go Fund Me page has been established and you can donate now to help with this effort. Please make a donation to this vital work. gofundme.com/f/raising-funds-for-rose-rosette-disease-research
