Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the Liberal Party's sweeping byelection wins, allowing Prime Minister Carney to form a Liberal majority government just over a year since his leadership win. They examine whether Carney's success stems primarily from anti-Trump sentiment uniting a diverse coalition, or from his personal charisma and credibility. They then explore the coalition's sustainability and whether Carney will use his political capital for transformative economic reforms or settle for transactional politics.Subscribe to The Hub's podcast feed to get all our best content:https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple)https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)Watch a video version on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHubCanadaFollow The Hub on X: https://x.com/thehubcanada?lang=enCREDITS:Amal Attar-Guzman - ProducerElia Gross - EditorRudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer - HostsChristinne Muschi/The Canadian Press - Photo Credit Hosted on Acast. Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the implications of impending Liberal byelection victories that will give Prime Minister Mark Carney a majority government. They examine Carney's "anti-Trump coalition" strategy, which has united political factions through floor-crossings from both Conservative and NDP ranks. They then explore the challenges facing Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, question Carney's thin legislative agenda, and ask whether 15 consecutive years of Liberal rule signals fundamental problems for the Conservative Party's political viability.Subscribe to The Hub's podcast feed to get all our best content:https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple)https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)Watch a video version on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHubCanadaFollow The Hub on X: https://x.com/thehubcanada?lang=enCREDITS:Amal Attar-Guzman - ProducerElia Gross - EditorRudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer - HostsChristinne Muschi/The Canadian Press - Photo Credit Hosted on Acast. Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu's crossing over to Carney's Liberal party, marking the fifth floor-crossing this parliamentary session. They examine what this new development reveals about the prime minister's ruthless pragmatism in building a broad coalition, despite ideological differences, Pierre Poilievre's mounting leadership challenges, and how Trump's presidency may be reshaping Canadian voter preferences. In the second half, they reflect on The Hub's five-year journey as an independent media outlet navigating Canada's subsidy-dominated news landscape. If you are enjoying the free version of the Hub Roundtable, subscribe to become a Hub Hero or Fellow to access the full version every week: https://thehub.ca/join/The Hub is Canada’s fastest growing independent digital news outlet.Subscribe to The Hub's podcast feed to get our best content when you are on the go:https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple)https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)Follow The Hub on X: https://x.com/thehubcanada?lang=enCREDITS:Amal Attar-Guzman - Producer and EditorRudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer - Hosts Hosted on Acast. Dave Snow, an associate professor at the University of Guelph, examines police clearance rates and reveals a troubling decade-long trend: fewer crimes are being resolved across all provinces. He explores potential causes, including rising violent crime severity, stagnant police resources amid rapid population growth, and systemic capacity constraints exposed by COVID-19. Snow argues Canada's criminal justice system has reached its limits and requires urgent attention. To read Dave Snow's full analysis, click here. This episode is a part of The Hub's new Fault Lines initiative, which examines the pressures pulling Canadian society apart and the principles that can hold it together. Barry Morishita, former mayor of Brooks and past leader of the Alberta Party, draws on his experience in one of Canada’s most economically and demographically unique rural communities to defend the controversial temporary foreign worker program. In this episode of Alberta Edge, he argues that in Brooks—a rural, southeastern Alberta city of 16,000 people that anchors a significant share of the country’s beef processing—TFWs arriving today are part of the same migration story that has shaped Canada for generations. This podcast is generously supported by Don Archibald. Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer examine the 14-day Iran war ceasefire and the geopolitical implications following negotiations. They analyze reports suggesting the Trump administration will allow Iran to control and toll the Strait of Hormuz, potentially ending the longstanding guarantee of free navigation. They argue that this concession would strengthen China's influence on the region, undermine American credibility globally, and possibly mark a historic turning point signaling the end of Pax Americana and post-Second World War globalization.Subscribe to The Hub's podcast feed to get all our best content:https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple)https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)Watch a video version on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHubCanadaFollow The Hub on X: https://x.com/thehubcanada?lang=enCREDITS:Amal Attar-Guzman - ProducerAlisha Rao - EditorRudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer - HostsKamran Jebreili/AP Photo File - Photo Credit Hosted on Acast. Caroline Elliott explains why she should be the next leader of the BC Conservatives. She details why she believes the NDP is pushing the province "aggressively downwards," arguing schools should not be teaching children to denigrate Canadian history and that the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) must be repealed to restore certainty over land ownership. Elliott defends her BC Liberal background and positions her province as the crucial battleground for Canada's broader conservative movement and national economic success.Subscribe to The Hub's podcast feed to get all our best content:https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple)https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)Watch a video version on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHubCanadaFollow The Hub on X: https://x.com/thehubcanada?lang=enCREDITS:Amal Attar-Guzman - ProducerAlisha Rao - EditorHarrison Lowman - HostAdrian Wyld/The Canadian Press - Photo Credit Hosted on Acast. Evan Menzies, a former Wildrose and UCP staffer, joins Alberta Edge to make the conservative case against separation. He argues the independence movement is asking conservatives to abandon their own principles—and that Alberta’s growing economic and political weight means its future influence inside Canada may be greater than many think. I really enjoy the Roundtable. Interesting that you talked about radical tax reform and Davos in the same episode. You be interested to know that the tax revenue in Switzerland is 30% federal, 40% Cantona (provincial) and 30% municipal. A change to a similar system in Canada would be a game changer! Also the Swiss (universal) Healthcare system is worth looking at....but that's for another day
