In this episode of Talking Tacoma, Media and Communications Director Amy Clancy sits down with Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) Director Jackie Flowers to explore how TPU’s budget and rate-setting process works, what’s driving rising utility costs, and how TPU is working to keep those costs in check. They discuss TPU’s history as a community-owned utility, how customer rates fund essential services, and the investments needed to maintain reliable electricity, safe drinking water, and rail operations for the future. Director Flowers also shares how TPU is pursuing $23 million in cost savings, investing in long-term infrastructure and clean energy, and expanding bill assistance programs for income-qualified customers. Learn more about the proposed rate adjustments, the challenges facing public utilities, and the resources available to help customers manage their bills.
