American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn

Judge Jeannine Pratt addressed Caleb Flynn in the Miami County Court of Common Pleas before delivering his sentence. She told Flynn he poses the highest risk to the community. She called his actions abhorrent and said the layers of deceit and cruelty are impossible to fathom. She told him Ashley died in her own home and that he could have walked away from the marriage. The judge said that through greed and lust he decided to take her life. She told Flynn he was supposed to protect his daughters and instead shattered their lives. She noted that he used his own father to manipulate others, which the court found disturbing. She asked him one question the court said it could not answer. Then she delivered the sentence. Flynn was convicted on all nine charges including aggravated murder with firearm specifications. No gun was ever found. No residue on the defendant. No fingerprints. The defense said the prosecution had nothing but an affair. The jury took approximately two hours to convict Caleb Flynn on all nine counts including aggravated murder with firearm specifications. Prosecutors argued Flynn shot Ashley Flynn twice in the back of the head while she slept in their Tipp City home on February 16 and staged the scene as a break-in. The prosecution’s evidence was digital: 107,000 text messages between Flynn and his mistress Alleigha Botner, Apple Watch data, phone location records, apps deleted hours before the killing, and Botner’s testimony from 34 printed volumes. Caleb Flynn was convicted on nine charges including aggravated murder for the shooting death of his wife Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors argued he shot Ashley while she slept in their Tipp City home and staged the scene as a break-in. Flynn was a worship leader and former American Idol contestant who had been having an 18-month affair with Alleigha Botner, a 24-year-old church intern. The pair exchanged more than 107,000 messages. In one, Flynn allegedly wrote he was up until 4 a.m. trying to think of ways to kill his wife and not go to jail. He texted Botner the night before the killing with the words “I choose you” and “actions will come tomorrow,” according to testimony. Divorce was always available. The defense called no witnesses. Alleigha Botner was the key prosecution witness in the Caleb Flynn murder trial. She testified for two days, reading from 34 printed volumes of the 107,000 messages she exchanged with Flynn during their 18-month affair. Some of those messages were her own words about wanting Ashley Flynn dead. When Flynn allegedly wrote about hiring someone to take Ashley out, Botner replied “so tempting,” according to testimony. She admitted coaching Flynn on data deletion and destroying messages after the killing. She lied to the FBI. Her phone and laptop went missing a month before Ashley died. At his sentencing hearing in Miami County Court, Caleb Flynn addressed the courtroom in handcuffs and maintained he did not kill his wife, Ashley Flynn. Then Ashley's family spoke. Flynn's own daughters had impact statements read to the court. One told him he had caused more than enough pain and ended her statement by telling him she is never coming to see him. Ashley's sister and brother-in-law, who are now raising all four children, addressed the court. Her parents said they forgive Flynn and asked for the maximum sentence.
