Nationalism requires the nation-state to represent its people. But demographic and cultural fragmentation, driven by immigration, has separated the state from the nation it was named after. When the people no longer consider the state to be a legitimate authority, vigilantism is inevitable.This is also a function of social media, with superficial differences between ethnic groups, abundant video evidence of group differences, amplified by the algorithms of image-based platforms. The smartphone has discredited the Blank Slate. However, Mary’s Singapore-style solutions — forcing incompatible imported “communities” to play nice with the natives — will not solve this problem. If legal migration continues, demographic insecurities will not subside. Until homogeneity is restored, the tribalising will continue.The state knows this. Hence their attempts to scapegoat and contain the “far right”. These protests could be crushed like the Peasants’ Revolt: its leaders persecuted, with a concession made to the mob by stopping the boats. Demographic change must be arrested and reversed. That can only be done with the departure of millions of recent arrivals. Thousands of Kurds claim to be in a relationship with the daughter of the Prime Minister; hundreds of Pakistanis claim to be in a gay relationship with the same man; and Bangladeshis claim to be persecuted for membership of a political party they know nothing about. Of course, the government still gives them fresh clothes, coach transport, and hotel rooms at taxpayers' expense — despite producing leaflets asking them not to commit sex crimes, because they know these men are violent predators.That's why the masked members of Patriot Platform are protesting in Dover and Portsmouth: to delay the arrival of illegal migrants assisted by the RNLI and the state. Suddenly, the police want to ban face coverings at protests — though burqas and niqabs are exempt. That's why Reform made a mistake calling the demonstrators "thugs" and "disgusting", and joined calls to ban face coverings now. Despite concerns about state involvement in Patriot Platform, the enemy is the state that imports these foreign criminals and punishes those opposed to it, not the protestors who fear for their lives and livelihoods and feel the need to hide their identity.
