Three labs proved something this week. Only one of them let the world check. On Tuesday, an extraordinary claim, announced on a phone call with reporters. Eighty eight hours of compute, ten thousand agents. And a file that was never filed. Two mathematicians had been working the same front for almost a year, out of their own research funds. What they published, anyone can verify.Four days earlier, another lab had done the exact opposite. Eleven days of work, thirteen million lines, and the door left open.On Friday, a one petabyte map of the human genome. The only result of the week an outside lab can test against its own patients. And a commission of the French Academy of Sciences, in eighteen sixty four, where one of the two scientists refused to show up.Three signals. One thread. One questionβ¦ποΈ Every week, SynthAIcast listens to the world's best AI podcasts so you don't have to. We are handed models, tools, assistants. But which road do they travel on, and who owns it?On Wednesday an agreement is signed. On Thursday it is made public. The warehouse where researchers and companies drop off their models changes hands. The buyer makes the chips almost all of today's AI runs on. It promises, in writing, that its own chips will stay optional. The same day, one lab decides on its own to cut a widely used tool off from its models. No judge, no regulator. One decision, one post, one date. Then on Thursday morning, three assistants go down within the same half hour. One of them named its cause in two words, and they are exactly ours. And a story from the nineteen fifties, where a plain metal box made the owner of the ship irrelevant. Then the ports changed hands. This episode opens season two.Three signals. One thread. One questionβ¦ποΈ Every week, SynthAIcast listens to the world's best AI podcasts so you don't have to. We are handed models, tools, assistants. Free, or nearly free. So where is the price? On Wednesday evening, it was written down. In an accounting document filed with the SEC, one line moves from 119 to 279 billion dollars in a single quarter. The filing names the reason in one word. Memory. On Monday, in Tokyo, a conglomerate placed the largest retail bond issue in Japanese history to fund its AI commitments. Seven years, sold to households, and a coupon that raises questions. The same day, in Taiwan, prosecutors indicted nine people. Servers that were meant to stay on the island went somewhere else. One way out did open this week, an agent running entirely on your own machine. It has a price too, and you may not like where it hides. And a story a century old, where families funded construction sites they would never see.Three signals. One thread. Since late July, the financial press repeated the same number: 250 billion dollars of guarantees on the largest construction site in AI.On Monday, a document filed with the US regulator gave the real number. 105 billion. And it is not even an investment. The gap is 145 billion, the price of the distance between what you say and what you sign. Two days later, another filing: a chipmaker grants its own customer an option to buy its shares.Meanwhile, on your screen, the logic runs the other way. On Monday, advertising enters ChatGPT across 31 European countries. On the free tier, and on the eight euro subscription. And one assistant has just moved onto the desktop, wired into its maker's advertising accounts.Plus an instrument bankers have used since the nineteenth century, which never pays on the merchant's word.Three signals. Since August 2nd, a European text has required machine-generated content to be labelled. A large American lab is applying it worldwide. On the very day it published the manual for its mark, a code repository appeared to erase it. Four thousand marks of interest in two days.Except nothing here is demonstrable. Not that the removal works, not that the mark is there. The tool that would settle it was never released. And the mark does not say what everybody assumes it says. A text you wrote yourself can come back marked.Meanwhile a fully generated news channel goes live, keeps its label on screen, and flags its own mistakes. Nobody was forcing it to.Plus a small impression struck into English silver since the fourteenth century, worth nothing without the room where you take it to be read.Three signals. One thread.
