Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!Proving a combat-related PTSD stressor for a VA disability claim comes down to proving direct participation in combat, not simply evidence you were around during a specific battle. In Part 2 of this five-part series on PTSD service connection, I explain how VA evaluates combat-related stressors under 38 CFR § 3.304(f)(2), when your own statement may be enough to establish what happened, and what evidence can help support your claim. We'll also cover why deploying to a combat zone doesn't automatically establish that you engaged in combat, and how VA determines whether the combat-related stressor rules apply to your situation. The goal is to help you understand exactly what VA is looking for when reviewing combat-related PTSD claims. Part 2 of 5 — How to Get Service Connected for PTSD

Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!Part 1 of 5 on how to get service connected for PTSD.First, you need a valid PTSD diagnosis that meets DSM-5 criteria. That means meeting the required criteria for trauma exposure, symptoms, duration, functional impairment, and ruling out other causes. But here's what many veterans misunderstand: You don't necessarily need a PTSD diagnosis from the VA. A qualified private mental health professional can also establish a valid diagnosis. And even if you don't meet the criteria for PTSD, there's still a massive opportunity to get service connected for another mental health condition. The diagnosis matters for establishing service connection, but the label generally doesn't determine your disability rating. VA primarily evaluates the severity of your symptoms and their impact on occupational and social functioning.

Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!Secondary VA claims are one of the most underutilized parts of VA disability, but most veterans either don’t know which conditions can actually be secondary or have no idea how to prove the connection. In this episode, I break down the basic strategy behind secondary service connection: diagnosis, causation vs. aggravation, proving the actual medical mechanism, and building a nexus that explains why the connection applies to YOU.I also cover why simply showing that two conditions are medically associated isn’t enough, what makes a strong nexus opinion, and how you may be able to get one without paying thousands of dollars.Do You Need a Nexus Letter for Secondary Conditions?
