Colombia has lost 54% of its proven natural gas reserves since 2018, leaving the country with just 1,717 Bcf and a reserves-to-production ratio of only 5.9 years. In 2022, Colombia’s peace commissioner secretly told a representative of the Clan del Golfo, the country’s largest criminal organization, “let’s play freeze tag.” Newly published recordings appear to show the government offering major concessions, from halting military operations to seeking the suspension of arrest warrants, while the cartel expanded dramatically in territory and manpower.
