Adam sits down with longtime friend Mardy Fish. Mardy turned pro in tennis at 17, won an Olympic silver medal and climbed to No. 7 in the world. He talks about why he says he “lost the gold” rather than won silver, and what separated Federer and Nadal from everyone else. He also explains why he left home at 15 to chase tennis instead of golf or baseball.
The turning point came in 2009. After knee surgery, Mardy decided he didn’t want to be “between 15 and 35 in the world.” He rebuilt his fitness, dropped more than 30 pounds and played a nearly six-hour match at the French Open. Afterward he believed he was the fittest athlete in the world, and his self-confidence took him into the top 10.
Mardy also opens up about his anxiety disorder, which led him to pull out of a 2012 US Open match against Roger Federer. He explains why he went public, and how he tries to push his own kids in sports without pushing too hard.
