In the fifth volume of In Search of Lost Time, Marcel Proust describes the emotion of jealousy. Marcel, the narrator, is living with Albertine in his family’s Paris apartment. This is the only time in the whole novel where he has her so close, under his roof, and yet instead of bringing him peace it becomes the most suffocating period of jealousy. I narrate some of the passages from the book with some interesting insights. Today, once again, I discuss another lovely book on nature. It's called The Spell of the Sensuous, written by David Abram. In this book David Abram draws on sources as diverse as the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Balinese shamanism, Apache storytelling, and his own experience as an accomplished sleight-of-hand of magician to reveal the subtle dependence of human cognition on the natural environment. This major work of ecological philosophy startles the senses out of habitual ways of perception and brings us back to our true nature.About A Book A Day podcast: This podcast is hosted by author Deepak Rana, coming to you from the serene heights of the Himalayas.
