Is Competition Good?

Is Competition Good?

2018-11-2121:28

Is Competition Good? We live in a culture where competition seems to be the fundamental basis for interactions between individuals, groups, countries etc. It has been taught that "Survival of the Fittest" is the nature of things, and therefore to survive in society we must compete. We seldom think about what competition brings out in us, such as aggression, self-interest, violence, and stress. Is this the best we can do as a society? Why are we so competitive? What is the alternative? More and more, the career paths set by our predecessors are becoming obsolete. Not because of a lack of availability or capability, but more because of a lack of motivation. We are realizing that the path set in front of us by society is not the path that we want to pursue. It often lacks meaning, purpose, and the ability to serve others as well as ourselves. During this episode I talk with my friend Jenny who has just changed her path from pursuing an engineering degree to starting her own business focused on mindful travel, healthy eating, and environmental sustainability. Jenny Mohr is a 25-year old entrepreneur, with a mission to educate what sustainable tourism is, and why it is important. She has founded Traveler Essentials, an online travel retail business, to support this mission. Traveler Essentials educates what sustainable tourism is on online social media platforms, and donates 10% of profits to organizations that align with these values. Jenny’s ultimate goal is to open up an experiential sustainable wellness resort, where she can continue her mission of turning what is known as “sustainable/eco/responsible tourism” into just “tourism.” To learn more about what sustainable tourism is, check out this blog post on the Traveler Essentials website: https://www.traveleressentials.com/blogs/news/what-is-sustainable-tourism Sign up for their mailing list on the website to get monthly business updates with huge discount codes!    Show Notes: • Introduction [01:55] • Traveling to Costa Rica [03:20] • Learning Spanish and other languages [06:40] • Choosing travel destinations [08:55] • Navigating foreign lands [11:20] • The struggles of the bilingual [14:10] • Tips for practicing a new language [17:50] • Colombia as a travel destination [20:46] • Experiences traveling to Peru [22:13] • Visiting Rainbow Mountain [24:13] • Patagonia as a travel destination [26:04] • Changing majors, quitting jobs [26:51] • “What is this, Interdisciplinary studies”?
