When Silence Hurts: Trauma, Family, and the Truth We Carry: In this deeply personal episode, Lisa sits down to process a heavy emotional day — from watching her 90-year-old father decline, to confronting the resurfacing of childhood trauma, and the silence that still surrounds it. As a daughter, a survivor, and a woman in long-term recovery, Lisa shares the hard truths about family dynamics, feeling unheard, and finding healing through action, honesty, and connection. This isn’t just a story of pain — it’s a message of hope: no matter what you’ve been through, you can recover. *********************************************************************************** Hey there, I'm Lisa, and welcome to "A Shotglass of Recovery." Whether you're back again or finding us for the first time, thank you so much for joining me. It's been quite a ride, hasn't it? In today's episode, I'm reaching out from my cozy corner in Toronto, Canada, sharing a very personal journey that digs deep into family dynamics, old wounds, and the road to recovery. Life sure has its bumps, and today I'm feeling those bumps in a big way. But I've learned one thing: talking helps. Sharing my story with you makes it just a bit lighter, and maybe it'll resonate with something you're going through. So, today, I'm opening up about my past, my struggles with grief, and facing the harsh realities of growing older. My dad is 90, and watching him change has been tough. The strong, steady man I knew is showing signs of decline, and it breaks my heart. I've also been brave enough to tell my sister the deeper truths of my childhood; it's like airing out a wound to let the healing begin. Recovery isn't just about quitting alcohol or drugs. It’s about facing those demons head-on, finding a voice for the voiceless parts of your past, and learning that you’re not alone. Together, with the help of a fantastic community, good old-fashioned sharing, and taking one step at a time, we can heal. So let's chat, let's connect, and let's support each other on this journey. Send me your thoughts, your stories, or just a quick message. You can reach me at ashotglassofrecovery@gmail.com. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for listening and being part of this journey with me. You're not alone. Keep taking those steps towards the light. Together, we've got this.

It's not just about the alcoholic, but about everyone touched by addiction, teaching us patience, love, and tolerance. It's a call to let go of past grievances and embrace new perspectives shaped by time, patience and understanding. Patience is indeed a virtue when rebuilding bridges burned in the chaos of addiction. Sometimes, it's about acceptance and recognizing the new foundations that take time to solidify. As we journey through these pages, we learn that overcoming our past gives us the tools to help others. In God's hands, even our darkest past can become a beacon of hope for those still in shadow. Join us, share your thoughts, and let's continue to be a source of hope and strength for each other. Remember, your past is your greatest asset in recovery, guiding you towards a brighter tomorrow.

SHOW NOTE: Like the shows? Consider showing your support paypal.me/AShotGlassofRecovery #courage #predatorslurk #theunderbellyofAA #thereishope In this powerful and deeply moving episode, Claudia D. shares her courageous journey from the grips of alcoholism to the freedom of recovery. When I first met Claudia, she was a quiet observer at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, but that changed when she asked me to sponsor her. Claudia’s story goes beyond recovery from alcohol; it’s a tale of resilience against manipulation and abuse. While AA offers a life-saving solution to alcoholism, Claudia bravely sheds light on a darker side—the predators who exploit vulnerable members in the program. She recounts her experience with an online group (originally it was called The Joy of Living out of Texas, but eventually that group would kick this predator out. Sadly he just started another online hunting ground called..), “A New Happiness,” run by a manipulative individual by the name of Richard and his enablers, and her ultimate triumph over their toxic influence. Through her faith in a higher power and the principles of AA, Claudia not only found recovery from the disease of alcoholism but also reclaimed her life from the grips of deceit and control of a sick man. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking hope, healing, and a reminder of the strength it takes to overcome not only addiction but the harmful actions of others. If you or anyone you know in A.A. is getting mixed messages remember some of our famous slogans "secrets keep us sick". Alcoholics Anonymous has amazing resources on the world service website www.aa.org where you can find a helpful pamphlet on What Sponsorship is and ISN'T. If a sponsor tells you to keep something secret, that's a sign something is wrong, trust your gut, speak up, change sponsors and find another group. And remember that Anonymity is not a cloak that covers unsafe or illegal behaviour, read the aa Safety Card for more info.
SHOW NOTE: Like the shows? Consider showing your support paypal.me/AShotGlassofRecovery I thought I would share some of the simple prayers that can be found right in the Big Book and the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. I also share a few others that have helped me along the way. The bottom line in my recovery is this...God is either everything or God is nothing....which is it? I had to make a decision. Was I willing to believe or not. This is what they call the turning point, the jumping off place. I can't really move forward until I take this step. I went from disbelief to belief with the act of willingness. I started to pray long before I believed in anything. I just knew, my way had not been working. I hope this helps you. Love and Light Lisa

I've known Bruce for a couple of years now and he's the kind of guy you just like instantly. I love him because he has an amazing recollection and respect for the history of Alcoholics Anonymous. I love him for his dedication to carrying the message of AA. I love him cuz when we ask for help, he honors the AA code and always says yes. And on Tuesday November 5th, 2024 wish him a happy 38 year anniversary. Check out his big book study sometime! Tuesdays at 530pm eastern time in this zoom room. Kellie Adams has been sober for 10 years. She has lifey problems and challenges just like the rest of us but today, she does that shit sober. Her new book is launching soon so we got together to chat about it. Shit I do Sober, a new book by Author Kellie Adams.
I asked Ed to come speak at our meeting but was working the actual day he spoke. But I'd heard him before and know he carries THE message of Alcoholics Anonymous.
So funny that I've been going to online meetings for 3 years now and I finally found out our next speakers home group...it's a group in my very own city! Shannon is one of those educated, intelligent ladies I always used to envy. Instead of realizing that I could be that too but it would require work and dedication on my part! Just another reminder of the disease of my thinking, I want everything instantly and without an effort. This is Shannon from the Mount Royal Group in Toronto, Canada.
Episode 30 of our Big Book study which happens live every other Saturday at 10 am in AA Solution Seekers meeting. All are Welcome! AA Solution Seekers zoom link Today we were on page 83 where the step 9 PROMISES are discussed, each sentence is a promise. It didn't happen over night but every single one of these promises has come true for me. If you like the show and want it to continue please consider making a contribution and hit our tip jar, for as little as a 1$ you can help us fund our show.
Today my dear friend Sarah C from the Beaches Group in Toronto celebrates 9 years of continuous sobriety and a changed way of living. I thought the talk I gave at the home group I "made her" join when she moved to a different part of the city would be a good way to honor her commitment to this way of living. She always jokes about how I give her orders or make her do things, then she expresses gratitude for listening because everything I've ever suggested was nothing more or less than what I had to do myself to get and maintain my sobriety. She also loves to tell the story to anyone who works with me how easy they have it, for when she started working with me she wanted to be my friend and I told her one day "I'm not here to be your fucking friend Sarah! I'm here to help save your fucking life." It was this way for me too. My sponsor got frustrated with my balking and whining about life one day and said "your thoughts and feelings are what's wrong with you Lisa so why don't we put them on a shelf for now. I'm not here to be your therapist and I'm not here to be your fucking friend. I have to care more about saving your life than whether or not you like me or I hurt your feelings." It made sense that my sponsor had done more to help me than any friend ever could, by the very fact that he wasn't motivated by keeping a friendship alive but instead motivated by keeping ME alive. In learning to sponsor this way, Sarah and I have become the closest of friends. We have learned that Iron sharpens Iron and a true friend doesn't just agree or co-sign another's bullshit.
Bea is a regular at her home group...still. Yes she is one of THOSE as many a newcomer has pondered "why do they still keep coming after all these years?". Listen and find out.
Today we are picking up on page 76 if you want to follow along...and I suggest you do...with highlighters and a notebook. :) I also throw in a few references to a wonderful #hazeldon resource known as Drop the Rock. It might not be AA approved literature but I can't recommend this little gem enough especially when it comes to a deeper understanding of steps 6 through 8! don't forget if you are listening but want to participate, our big book study happens every second Saturday at 10am est in the AA Solution Seekers zoom room - all are welcome. You can also follow me on instagram for links to the show. https://www.instagram.com/a_shot_glass_of_recovery/profilecard/?igsh=MWV4aDg3eWhlaGM2OQ==
I've personally known V for a while now. She was a long time listener of 2 sober chicks and would often write us. It was so nice she reached out when I started this new show. She is one of us and today talks about a number of things many of us can relate to along this journey to recovery: the past and how it affected us; present struggles like mental health issues and how AA has taught us these are valid but they are NOT excuses or reasons to not recover; and ghosting a sponsor....who hasn't done that to our own peril at least once on this journey? I hope you enjoy her story as an impromptu speaker who answered the call when a speaker was needed. thank you V (sparkles).
This was my first time being asked to speak at a roundup. It was so much fun to travel outside of my area and visit another area to carry the message. It would be this speaking engagement that lead to my invite to Peurta Vallarta Sobriety Under the Sun Conference. #SUS I don't consider this one of my best talks, but someone in the audience heard a message that spoke to him. He was on that speaker seeker committee and he submitted my tape. #blessed #aaspeakers #owensoundroundup #orcspeakers
