Those of us who struggle (big time) with clutter love to feel prepared for anything (and everything). The idea of decluttering can feel like giving up on that, and when worst-case scenarios actually happen, all those panicky feelings flare up and make it hard to let go of clutter. The solution is not to pretend bad things can’t happen. It’s to accept reality. It’s reality that bad things happen. It’s also reality that keeping more stuff than my house can hold or that I can handle makes dealing with bad things (or even good things) more difficult.   My booksWant to be a patron of the show? liked the comment about doing laundry each day and how it did not work for you. I have a disabled child and have a lot of washing. we have lots of carers coming in to help. I do not do washing on Saturday and Sunday. I like to pretend that these are my days off. As I was listening to your pod cast, my washing machine had broken down and I had just got a new machine. I had mountains of laundry and was very grump, as it seamed to go on forever in the weekend. I felt that I had not had a break. Now I know why I was grumpy and will only do it Monday to Friday. I would love to do it only one day but we have really large volume. Thanks for the light bulb moment

Definitely not entirely related to one or the other. probably effected by both, but not one or the other. My mom is a clean freak, she grew up in very unstable environment, not clean or safe. It was her mission to not have us, or her, continue to experience the same. Plus she's very type A kinda personality. I am very not. My kids have a safe, reasonably clean, but cluttered, and a touch chaotic home lol. 5 kids and we homeschool, so there's Alot of people and stuff in a small house!

I don’t see any problem with asking my husband, “hey can you please put your drill away?” 🤷🏻‍♀️ and sometimes I do just put his stuff away himself. My hubby is very easy going enough that a little nagging isn’t a big deal with him though

And now it’s kind of a game for me to constantly be trying to stay on top of the kitchen throughout the day!

The things you say that were profound for you but seem like “duh” reality once you know it, resonate so truly with me. The fact that a clean kitchen means someone cleaned it - I needed to accept this just like you did. It has been so helpful to me and for some reason I am no longer annoyed that I have to do the same things over and over to keep things maintained. You are my favorite of all the cleaning/decluttering/organizing people I’ve listened to. You just “click” with me! ♥️

The sneak attack is terrible advice. Especially for a child that may have any sort of processing issue, or add, adhd, ocd, ect. This happened to me several times as a child and it was traumatic and still makes me feel upset when I think about it.

Also, this is my first ever podcast, and I found it upon recommendation, came to the list, and pulled the finger equivalent of the Price Is Right wheel, scrolling down and chose a random one. The Universe provides, though, because holy bananas - you're speaking to my soul here! I struggle with hoarding, and long to be like my best friend, who naturally tidies/straightens throughout the day without thinking about it. I love the concept of separating out these terms, and I'm going to download some of these podcasts for a trip I have tomorrow - this is really helpful. Thank you, so much!!

I don't mean to be disrespectful or anything, but don't your husband and kids ever help? it seems like there's constant mess and there's no way it's just you making it, but I never hear about them helping. why is this hard work delegated only to you?
