ADHD and Narcissism: The Hidden Link You NEED To Know! - Dr Mark Rackley

Alex chats with leading psychologist, Dr Mark Rackley.Expect to learn the signs you're dating a narcissist, the similarities between ADHD and narcissism, and so much more.Topics:00:00 Trailer02:28 A broad question and not yet ADHD specific, but, what is a narcissist and is there a difference between a narcissist and someone with NPD?06:48 Why do you think narcissism is such a big topic in the world at the moment?08:27 Is genuine Narcissism or NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder for audience members) common and if so, why do you think that is?10:10 What does a narcissist need to "survive" and what is it they’re looking for in life (and what are they looking for from people around them)?14:20 How does a narcissist prey on someone and what sort of people are they looking to exploit?16:30 Is covert narcissism different to the more mainstream narcissism we hear about and why is it particularly dangerous?18:21 Are narcissists afraid of being alone and what - in general terms - do you think a narcissist thinks of when they are left alone?20:00 What might the general timeline be for someone dating a narcissist and that dating turning into a serious relationship i.e how might narcissism show itself gradually in a romantic relationship?22:04 What tricks does a narcissist use to keep you on their hook if they see you as part of their "narcissistic supply”?24:05 ADHD Item27:06 Washing machine of woes33:09 Do narcissists know they’re narcissists?34:24 At what point would a narcissist begin to become self-aware that they might indeed have a problem?36:39 I need to voice some worries of my own! I’m on camera, I think I share some of the traits we've been talking about. I don't like being alone. I need praise to rid me of my RSD….do you think I’m a narcissist? How can I tell?!39:48 How can I be sure that my traits are just ADHD and not narcissism?43:09 Are there any other similarities someone with ADHD might have that are typical of a Narcissist, but might not be narcissism?45:07 If someone has an ADHD partner and they are trying to figure out if it's ADHD, or if there is something more sinister at play, what steps can they take to help try to figure it out?47:51 Is there a known cause for narcissism and if not, what do you think might be a factor that perpetuates it?49:18 How to spot a narcissist53:21 Can you ever change a narcissist and is it worth trying?54:05 Can narcissists be successful professionally?57:33 Successful narcissists aside, with the lower rungs of narcissism and perhaps the majority of the narcissistic population that aren't particularly high-functioning CEOs, what can that look like? Or to put it another way, what does the "everyday narcissist" look like?59:40 Is social media causing narcissism, or is it just the perfect tool for someone who already is a narcissist?Follow Dr Mark on Instagram 👉 https://www.instagram.com/drmarkrackley/Listen to Dr Mark's podcast 👉 https://open.spotify.com/show/2pQcITHSlR5qNUagV0jEgXThis episode has been produced for entertainment purposes only and is in no way meant to be taken as medical advice or advice in any way. Alex chats with Matt Hancock, the former UK Health Secretary, on a range of important issues affecting the Neurodivergent community. Topics:00:00 Trailer 01:28 How much consideration was there for the neurodiverse community when considering putting the country into Lockdown04:56 In the past few years you've come up against a lot of pressure, did that give you a new sense of empathy with regards to people who have felt misunderstood their whole life, i.e in this case, the neurodivergent community?08:25 Washing machine of woes10:22 You've been outspoken about Dyslexia, but do you think you stray into the realm of any other neurodivergent behaviours? 13:47 How is it that a clearly very bright person such as yourself can miss being dyslexic until the age of 18 or 19?15:26 What measures can be taken within the schooling system to make sure these Neurodivergent behaviours are recognised from an earlier age?16:27 Advice to parents if the school doesn’t take neurodiversity seriously 20:41 How do you think not being diagnosed impacted your personal progression and development?26:45 How can teachers identify the unique learning requirements of individual children30:42 What plans would you enforce to reduce the NHS ADHD diagnosis waiting list?35:31 What would you say to a child that feels ‘different’38:25 How parents can help their child find their passion 39:35 When you were Health Secretary, did you think ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions were taken seriously by the powers that be and if not, why do you think that was?41:36 Much like ADHD, I think people can often have a reductive view on what Dyslexia is. What do you think is involved in Dyslexia that people don't know about? 46:00 I don't know what the exact statistics are, but around 0.5% of the population went to Oxbridge. You were at Oxford and openly say you have dyslexia. Even with that holding you back, what is it about the rest of your brain that got you into the most prestigious university in the world?48:14 You must have seen neurodivergent people at Oxford with some incredible minds, diagnosed and presumably undiagnosed. Do you think excelling to an unusual degree, in one particular area, is actually dependent on neurodivergence? 48:56 I remember reading an interview with an ex-CIA agent who said the CIA are predominantly made up of Neurodivergent people and I can only assume it's true of the MI5 because they have a propensity to connect ideas that a cognitively typical person wouldn't. If Neurodivergence is such a beneficial force if channelled correctly, why has screening taken so long to employ in schools?53:45 Should people put ADHD on their CV56:44 What can we all do to convince companies of the benefits of a neurodivergent workforce 60:25 Why have the neurodiverse community been missed for so long01:04:06 ADHD item01:05:06 What has the last 5 years taught you about humanity?01:06:09 Closing advice for the neurodivergent community Support ADHD Chatter:LinkedIn 👉 https://bit.ly/3m1qm8QInstagram 👉 https://bit.ly/3KuNXIrTikTok 👉 https://bit.ly/3ZxZNGdThis episode has been produced for entertainment purposes only and is in no way meant to be taken as medical advice or advice in any way. 9:30 yes. Using these things to quiet the chaos in your brain. ato finally have a space for no thoughts or less thoughts. To hear someone else say this is such a relief. I think another aspect is routine and I have kept this crutch even though it is. I longer doing the helpful job it did do, I'm keeping it now because it is indelibly linked into my daily routine that without it I am lost.
