Inspiring you to be your baby's hero I met Tiffani Czapinski as a new member at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce while we both were attending an online Zoom event there. When she introduced herself to the group I immediately knew I wanted to have a conversation with her. Tiffani’s background is as a firefighter, but because of a back injury, she had to leave that profession. She then inspired herself to create Rescue Baby, her new emerging yet to be branded business.  Listen to this episode to find out how she’s pivoting, and not because of the pandemic. Honoree Corder is a wildly prolific author who has sold over 4 million copies of her books on Amazon. What’s more, she offers an online “Publishing Ph.D.” course to aspiring authors that walks them through the entire process of conceiving, composing, marketing, and selling their books.  One of the things she tells her clients is that producing a podcast is an effective way to enhance their reach and boost sales of their books. This is where our amiable host, John Biethan, comes in. He’s just as much a proselyte for podcasting as Honoree is for self-publishing. Or, as Honoree puts it, “You’re the me of podcasting.” Got it? Good. In the ensuing conversation, Honoree explains why self-publishing makes a lot of sense in today’s marketplace, where traditional publishers are stingy with resources and expenditures for all but blockbuster authors.  But there’s money to be made and authority to be gained by going the independent route. The book - and the podcast that grows out of it - can elevate an author’s profile and create beaucoup opportunities in their fields of expertise. “Putting an investment in their book is an asset in their business,” she says.  Marketing considerations aside, Honoree says that many of her clients simply have the time now to write the book they’ve always wanted to write, now that we’re all a bunch of socially-distanced homebodies. “There's less to go and do, so there's more time to sit and write,” she says. “They’re kind of like, I'm ready to write that book and I want to publish it.  And now I understand I have a line of sight.”  Contact Honoree Corder HonoreeCorder.com  @honoree on Facebook and Instagram "Branded" Podcast Contact Info John BiethanContact the show ALL MAVEN a Full-service Digital & Creative Agency Intro/Outtro music credit Dances With Koalas by coruscate (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Coruscate/61129 Ft: Calyman & Psubhashish
Originally a graphic designer, Tanya Goodall Smith noticed that many small businesses in her area (Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho) were shooting themselves in the foot by using amateur photography in their advertising and marketing materials. “When 90 percent of the real estate on your ad is a photo and it's terrible, “ she says, “it can be difficult to make it look good.” In that case, your brand doesn’t look good. “Branding is your reputation,” she says. “It's what other people think of you or your business or your product.” So Tanya decided to put her visual communications skills to work creating professional photos and videos for a clientele that includes companies, real estate brokers, medical practitioners, and anyone who “really cares about their business and their clients and really just wants to take their brand up to that next level, beyond the DIY.” Her photos appear on everything from billboards to print ads to websites. She also offers video services, to provide the added impact of spoken words, music, and motion, and social media marketing services that make use of her photos. Having discovered a niche, Tanya is also teaching other photographers the ropes of corporate and personal brand photography, and solo entrepreneurship: “I created the course that I wish I would have had.”   Contact Tanya Goodall Smith WorkStoryPhotography.com WorkStoryEducation.com "Branded" Podcast Contact Info John BiethanContact the showALL MAVEN a Full-service Digital & Creative Agency Intro/Outtro music credit Dances With Koalas by coruscate (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Coruscate/61129 Ft: Calyman & Psubhashish
Virtually every product or service travels through a supply chain that has a myriad of moving parts and plenty of expense and risk involved. I spoke with Jane Tierney, a consultant who helps companies save money, gain efficiencies, and mitigate risk. Our conversation touched on the key aspects of her universally applicable specialty. Here are some key takeaways that might be relevant to just about any business: Transportation and logistics are an obvious aspect of physical supply chains, whether by air, rail, ship or through pipelines. Other operations that stand to benefit from tight supply chain management include purchasing, production, sales, and operations.  Think also of the internet as a logistical vehicle for moving information from place to place, and exchanging money for all the goods and services that move that way:  music, apps, games … … not to mention shopping. Tierney, an engineer by training who calls herself “a factory geek,” shares her insights and fascinations about the way Amazon warehouses work.  Contact Jane Tierney Website: www.Purple-Link.net Email: Jane@purple-link.net Set up a phone appointment at CallWithJane.com "Branded" Podcast Contact Info John BiethanContact the showALL MAVEN a Full-service Digital & Creative Agency Intro/Outro music credit Dances With Koalas by coruscate (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Coruscate/61129 Ft: Calyman & Psubhashish Program notes by Dave Herndon.
A Strategic Book Coach Meets a Recovering Magazine Editor at the Podcast Cafe Honoree Corder is a Strategic Book Coach, a self-publishing expert, and the author of 53 books that have sold 4 million copies!  She also calls herself a co-creator: “I work with professionals and entrepreneurs to help them write, publish, and monetize their books.” For the purposes of this conversation, refer to her title, You Must Write a Book: Boost Your Brand, Get ...  Dave Herndon is a recovering magazine editor and newspaper person, which makes him one of a legion of former print journalists who are trying to find a Plan B (C, D...)  since the publishing industry has cratered and jobs have disappeared. He’s now a wordsmith for hire (editing and writing) and a podcasting apprentice. To learn where he’s coming from, check out Herndon-at-Large.com. Dave asked the questions, Honoree did most of the talking, and John chimed in with insights about how podcasting fits into the communications and branding ecosystems. Key talking points include Honoree: Self-published books can’t be amateurish. You need to have them edited, designed, and proofed professionally. Her indie team is full of pros with backgrounds in traditional publishing. “You can actually hire really great people who are making a fair living because you're paying them directly.” Honoree: Self-publishing can be more rewarding than traditional publishing. “I can create a book that is every bit as good and I get to do all of the other things that I want to do with the book. I get to have quality control. I get to have content control. I get to have timing control. I get to have creative control. I get to keep all the cash.” Honoree: Carpe diem! “Write it, write it, write it. You have more time than you've ever had and may ever have. Again, we don't know when this is going to be over and you might have to go back to work. … You can't predict the future, but you can sit down and write.” Honoree: Podcasts are great publicity. “As a podcast guest, I have done about 500 podcast interviews. And when someone signs up for my newsletter, one of my questions is how'd you find me? And it's always through someone recommending, or they heard me on a podcast.” John agrees with her: “Your podcast is your advertisement. … It's just great, quote-unquote, advertising.” John: Podcasts are still the land of opportunity. “Last count [there were] … about 900,000 podcasts …Only about 250 to 300,000 are actually active….So when you compare basically podcasting to any form of media, it's just wide open still. ...it's certainly less than $500 a year, depending on how much you really want to get into it.” Honoree recommends these writers’ podcasts for tips and technique: Kelton Reid – The Writer Files and Six Figure Authors. I wanted to have this conversation with Marcy and told her if she got the Samson Q2U, I’d schedule with her.  As a branding portrait photographer with extensive marketing and advertising experience, Marcy Browe uses this unique skill set to help her clients uncover their personal brand. Then, she brings that brand vision to life by creating stunning visual images that perfectly capture her client’s next-level version of themselves. As a thriving portrait photographer, she’s able to immediately connect with her photo subjects to make them feel at ease and to allow them to enjoy their experience. This is her superpower, both behind the camera lens and when she’s presenting to a group. This is Marcy Browe. Marcy talks about the influences in your life as a part of your brand. So inescapably and what usually creeps into this show, we talked about some of the music that has influenced each of us in our lives. John’s Classic Music Mentioned (listen/watch) Jimi Hendricks - The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Purple Haze Eric Clapton - Cream Crossroads Quick Messenger Service - Happy Trails, Who Do You Love Keith Jarret - Keith Jarrett Trio Standards 2 Chick Corea and Return To Forever - Light As A Feather, Spain Cab Calloway - Minnie the Moocher and The Blues Brothers 1980 version Marcy’s Classic Music (listen/watch) Cream Sunshine Of Your Love The Beatles Birthday Marcy’s Favorite Photographers and Influences Herb Ritts Herb Ritts website Herb Ritts in Vanity Fair: Retrospect (Madonna, Richard Gere, Cindy Crawford) Herb Ritts video: Madonna - Cherish Herb Ritts video: Chris Isaak - Wicked Game Annie Leibovitz Annie Leibovitz on Artnet Annie Leibovitz in Rolling Stone: The Last Word: Annie Leibovitz Looks Back on a Legendary Career Annie Leibovitz in The Guardian: Annie Leibovitz on the shots that made her Annie Leibovitz on Artnet: John Lennon and Yoko Ono, New York, 1980 , 1980 Annie Leibovitz on Artnet: John Lennon and Yoko Ono, The Dakota, New York, December 8 , 1980 Annie Leibovitz Masterclass Annie Leibovitz quotes:   A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people. The camera makes you forget you're there. It's not like you are hiding but you forget, you are just looking so much. When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I'd like to know them. Anyone I know I photograph.   Marcy’s Mentions Marcy mentions the company that did her website, April Edwards at AEDesignCo.com.and how now she’s getting more “qualified” leads than she ever has before. John’s Mentions Jim Terr, Ep. 7 Flashback Friday: BuDDy’s Old Fashioned Podcast, a Glamourous Guest (Kate VanDevender, film producer) on his podcast What Has My Attention. John mentions an episode he did with Mary Cravets on this podcast, episode 7 Mary Cravets: Client Generation - Tied For First and the highly recommended networking service she provides, WatchUsThrive.com. Honoree Corder, Strategic Book Coach, who without having her own podcast, has been a guest on over 500 episodes. I wanted to have this conversation with Marcy and told her if she got the Samson Q2U, I’d schedule with her. Why? Because if you’re a professional, spending time on Zoom or podcasts, you need to come off as a professional.  For you podcast junkies and wannabes, this episode was recorded with Marcy using a $60 Samson Q2U and myself using my 15-year-old AKG C3000 condenser mic. The episode was recorded remotely using Squadcast, mixed and mastered with Adobe Audition, and finally, run through Auphonic. And Finally When asked what do you see yourself doing in the next 5-years? Marcy says “More of the same. I’m in appreciation mode. It will appreciate as a monetary value appreciates” which I learned from Esther Hicks of Abraham-Hicks. When people ask me what I want, I say I want more of what I have. I don’t want something different, I say I want more of what I have. Notable Quotes, Questions, and a Book The "Accidental" Millionaire: Leaping From Chance To Mastery In the Game of Life, by Stephanie Frank. Watch Us THRIVE Zoom Calls. “When you come from who you really are - your values, and then align with what will make you truly happy - the vision part of it... I think of values and vision as the bookends of how you operate your business. Your values. Who you are. Your vision. What will make you happy out there in the future? When those two things are set up, then it’s all the work in between…” ~ Mary Cravets “What do you have control over?” ~ Mary Cravets “We rarely get the whole picture of client generation. Instead. We’re doing desperate activities that never quite link together. So how do you make sure that every element from your values to your vision to your pricing in alignment? Your values. Your vision. Your pricing. Your understanding of your ideal client and where they gather. Their messaging. How do they talk about the problem you solve? How do you get their attention by using the words they’re saying to themselves? How do you have a sales conversation where you can charge what you’re worth. How do you manage your time? Those are all the elements of client generation.” ~ Mary Cravets “On speaking, it’s important to understand that speaking is not speaking, is not speaking, is not speaking. You have to understand what your strategy is behind it.” ~ Mary Cravets “Question: What’s better, you winning or your clients winning? Answer: They’re tied for first.” ~ Mary Cravets “The fastest path to failure is conformity.” ~ Brian Bethany “Sometimes your voice is the only voice people can hear.” ~ Les Brown Contact Mary MaryCravets.com JOIN Watch Us THRIVE Zoom Calls "Branded" Podcast Contact Info John BiethanContact the show ALL MAVEN a Full-service Digital & Creative Agency Intro/Outtro music credit Dances With Koalas by coruscate (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Coruscate/61129 Ft: Calyman & Psubhashish
If you’re thinking it’s time for a computer upgrade, you’ll enjoy the options presented in this episode. If you’re concerned about getting hacked, we’ve got you covered on what to do to protect your computer and your business. In this episode, we geek out a bit with Kevin Clemons, CEO at Au Technology Solutions. It should be noted, in this episode when Kevin mentions services offered by Microsoft, that those similar services are also available with Google’s suite of products. I wanted to say this because well… I’m Google-centric. Is that a word? My spell-checker thinks not. I also wanted to apologize for the clicky sounds you hear from Kevin’s side of the conversation. I’ve done what I can to remove them, but many still exist. We start the conversation talking about John’s pending computer upgrade options: AMD Ryzen computers. Kevin’s recommended laptop, the Lenovo Flex 14, 12Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD hard drive, a touch screen on Amazon about $600. What can you do to protect yourself with your home computer now that you’re working at home? Here are Kevin’s recommendations: Use BitDefender to protect yourself from CryptoLocker. Stick with using the anti-virus that comes with Windows 10. It’s better than any free software you can get, for the most part. Or use BitDefender if you want to go further then Windows 10 can do. Malwarebytes as a fantastic mediation tool. HitmanPro is another great 2nd opinion scanner as well. Add ADW Cleaner to your list as well to clean up what your browser picks up along the way. Regarding CryptoLocker, don’t put your trust in only one company to protect yourself. There’s only one way to protect yourself: a backup that is not permanently attached to your device. Kevin recommends using BackBlaze. It’s about $60 per year. We go on and talk about email attachments carry malware payloads and how best to protect yourself from them: Use chat applications like Microsoft Teams, Slack, or Google’s Meet to verify unexpected email attachments that may be carrying payloads. With convenience comes a sacrifice of security. Use two-factor authentication (2FA) also called multi-factor authentication (MFA). Google Authenticator is one such app you can use on your phone to authenticate entry to a website or service. Next, we talk about passwords and using a password manager like LastPass. Kevin has another idea about keeping passwords. Kevin describes his simple process of how he creates good passwords. Here’s Kevin’s algorithmic password generator steps. Check Have I Been Pwned? ONLY to see if you’ve been compromised as an investigative step. Just enter your email address and it will be checked and show you what websites, etc. are known to have been hacked and which your email address is associated with. Here’s an example of how to create a secure password: Use any word you’d like to use for your passwords with the following changes: Anytime we create a password, the 2nd letter should be capitalized. The 3rd letter should be a special character like a !, %, $, etc. Then add the year you created the password as a reminder to change it the next year. After the year, add the version like “1.” So if you changed the password within the same year, you would change this number to “2.” At the end of the password, add 2 letters representing the name of the service or program e.g. “gm” for Gmail. What are other ways to stay secure while working from home? Virtual Private Network. A VPN is one of the smartest ways to protect your online privacy and maintain your data security. ~ Wikipedia Kevin talks about using Linux. Linux is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution. ~ Wikipedia Spam scammer calls have not stopped: Do not let someone on your computer if you don’t know who that person is.  So we wrapped up talking about Microsoft, Google, their products, overall usage, and privacy/security features and John asks Kevin how he defines what a brand is: “I’d say it’s your public-facing image.” Contact Kevin Clemons CALL (760) 299-4104 or email support@autechnologysolutions.com  "Branded" Podcast Contact Info John BiethanContact the show ALL MAVEN a Full-service Digital & Creative Agency Intro/Outtro music credit Dances With Koalas by coruscate (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Coruscate/61129 Ft: Calyman & Psubhashish
This is the 3rd episode Chris Ryan has been on, and we’ve only done 5 episodes. What’s up with that? Simple. He’s a great co-host and we have a lot of fun together - as it should be. Chris owns Ryan Video Productions. As he says on his website, “Let’s do some good work together!” He means it, as evidence by his client testimonials and the people I’ve talked to who’ve used his services.  Chris and I share a love for music. We’ve both been involved in the seen for years. While Chris worked in a radio station DJ’n several shows, I started behind a mic producing podcasts before it was called podcasting. Back then, it was often called “audio blogging.” So yes, this episode is largely dominated by talking about the musicians, bands, and experiences we’ve had along the way. But don’t worry, Chris will let you know how best to prepare for your video shoot BEFORE you hire the videographer.  Topics, Mentions, and Links to All The Music Chris listened to Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” and discovered Thomas Dolby’s album “Flat Earth.” The Flat Earth is the second album by Thomas Dolby. It was released in February 1984, peaking at #14 on the UK Albums Chart. The first single from the album was "Hyperactive!", which peaked at #17 in the UK Singles Chart, making it Dolby's highest-charting single in his home country. ~ Wikipedia. Question: What’s Bacon got to do with ALL MAVEN?Answer: Bacon is proof that God loves us! In this episode, you’ll get to know ALL MAVEN’s CEO and branding maven Alexandra Renee-Polestra (THE MAVEN), and her partner and COO Joseph Poelstra, the Executioner. Where did the name ALL MAVEN come from? A name in its self is worth a lot of money. Which would you rather have to help you? A connoisseur or an expert? As nouns, the difference between a connoisseur and an expert is that a connoisseur is a specialist of a given field whose opinion is valued; especially in one of the fine arts, or in a matter of taste while an expert is a person with extensive knowledge or ability in a given subject. THE MAVEN (Alex) is a connoisseur. Her birthstone is alexandrite for the month of June. What is branding? Branding encompasses a feeling, an emotional connection, and a message. Branding is what you believe, how you believe, and how you execute that belief. Your brand is a belief system.  Where is ALL MAVEN going in the near future? We’re constantly clarifying our brand message. Having a great team as we have has helped solidify our brand and message. And finally from Alex If you’re considering doing branding and you’re not going to be hiring a professional branding company, do your research. Understand that it’s more than just design. Anyone can make a  professional design. There are lots of free tools out there that can help you do that. But think about and ask yourself: What is the underlying belief system of my company? What is my core message? What is my Why? (see Simon Sinek, Start With Why). Understand that your brand message is not tied to your product. It’s not tied to your service. If you have the same brand, it doesn’t matter what your product or service is.  So… what is it you really want people to feel and understand about your company?
