SHOW NOTES ‘Captain’ Charles Hewitt. 1884-1966 Born Durham 1884 Millwall Manager 1936-40 and again 1948-56 Known as ‘Mr Millwall’ because of his involvement with all aspects of the club - scouting, management and club secretary. One of the most flamboyant and controversial figures ever to be involved with the club. FA Cup semi-finalists 1937 Promotion to Division Two Resigned 1940 after an FA enquiry into alleged illegal payments Libel action against Millwall chairman Tom Thorne 1941: Awarded £100 damages: Hewitt returned to the bomb damaged Den in 1948 to less success. Millwall had to apply for re-election 1949-50. Though we did finish runners-up in Division Four 1952-53. Sacked 1956 - he later won a case for unfair dismissal against the club. Millwall Player Manager 1910 - 13 Then manager to 1918 Richard Lindsay describes his appointment as being seen as ‘significant’ at the time. ‘A quiet, unassuming and well-behaved young man, he was famous for his hard-hit crosses, which produced a lot of goals for his central strikers. ‘ His first game as Millwall Manager was a 0-3 loss to Clapton Orient in the Dubonnet Cup, played in Paris 1910 As a manager Lipsham steered Millwall away from Southern League relegation to 8th position 1911-12, then 6th 1912-13. Made some important signings as manager, inc full back Jack Fort and goalscorer Wally Davis. He managed the club during the difficult years of the First World War, playing in the London Combination. Served briefly post-war at Millwall ‘in an advisory capacity’, before leaving for West Norwood, Northfleet then on to Canada where he became involved in the development of football. He had no luck across the ocean and lost a hand in a timber-yard accident, before dying in a train crash 1932. He also had a tobacconist shop at 142 Bramall Lane. Additionally, Stevenson won the Southern Professional Charity Cup in 1904. His benefit match against Northampton Town in 1909 attracted a crowd of 10,000. He became a pub landlord in retirement. SHOW NOTES Bill Bryant, 1899-1986 William Ingram (Bill) Bryant was born in Ghent, Belgium on 01 March 1899. He was a full England International as well as an Amateur International. He won his only full England cap on 21 May 1925, in a friendly against France in Paris. England won the match 3 – 2, and Bryant played the full 90 minutes. A centre half, he plied his trade with Clapton and Millwall. He was a Clapton player at the time of his full International call up. William was the Clapton captain for the 1924/25 F.A. Amateur Cup Final against Southall, held ironically at The Den, Millwall, home of the team he was soon to join. Clapton won the game 2 – 1, thus retaining the trophy they had won a year earlier, when Bill was also a member of the victorious Clapton team. He left Clapton to join Millwall in 1925 and played 132 games for “The Lions”, scoring 30 goals before returning to Clapton in 1931. William Ingram Bryant died on 21 January 1986, in Witham, Essex aged 86. Millwall 1925-31 140 apps in all comps - 30 goals Bob Hunter 1860-1933 Millwall manager 1918-33 ( longest tenure in the job) Millwall club trainer 1897-1918 Originally from Govan, spent many years at Montrose FC in Scotland Built reputation as a runner and coach - winning many prizes Known as an organizer of athletic events - continued on the Isle of Dogs Took charge in 1918 Developed a side strong enough to finish 3rd in Division 3 South 1923-24, 1925-26 & 1926-27 before promotion as champions in 1927-28 Shrewd singer of players including Richard Parker 1924 and Jack Cock 1927 who scored twice in a 9-1 win over Coventry 1932-33 - 7th in Division Two - although Hunter died in office aged 73, the only Millwall manager ever to do so. He holds two records at Millwall which are unlikely to be broken. He is the oldest player ever to have played for Millwall in a league match at 42 years of age and he is still Millwall's longest serving employee having joined from Exeter City in 1914 and staying on in various capacities until he died in 1965 a total of 51 years. He served in the 5th Dragoon Guards in France WW1 from 1916 Capped for England - 21 May 1921, Belgium 0 England 2, an end-of-season tour match at Stade du Daring Club de Bruxelles, Sint-Jans Molenbeek, Bruxelles, aged 33 years 36 days. Sammy Frost - 1879-1926 Born - Poplar 1879 Right-half / inside-right Came through local side Millwall StJohn’s - a top junior side on the Isle of Dogs 1900-01 Millwall Athletic 10 apps 3 goals 1901 - 1907 MANCHESTER CITY - First Division from 1903. SHOW NOTES Jack Cock MM (and mentioned in dispatches) 1893-1966 - born Hayle, Cornwall (north coast - near Penzance) 115apps 77 goals 1927-30 Held Millwall’s top scorer record with 77 goals until 1973 (overtaken by Derek Possee) Signed from Plymouth - previously with Huddersfield & Chelsea Third Division South championship winner 1927-28 scoring 25 goals Millwall manager 1944-48 Manager of the 1945 War Cup final side Relegation 1948 - led to Cock retiring to run the White Hart at New Cross Gate Currently fifth in the Lions all time scorers list behind: Neil Harris, Teddy Sheringham, Steve Morison, Derek Possee and then Jack Cock. Signed for the Lions late in his career aged 34 Played prior to WW1 for Brentford and Huddersfield Decorated for ‘’Bravery in the Field" and Mentioned in Despatches for "gallantry". He was reported as 'missing, presumed dead' at one point during the war One of the top goal scorers in the Football League - Brentford, Chelsea, Everton, Plymouth then Millwall . Wally Davis - 1888-1937 Born - Mold Walter Otto Davis - his second name came from a German soldier who was a friend of his father. Family moved to London as a child His father served as Mayor of West Ham 1920-21 His brother died playing football - parents forbade him playing. But he took it up in the pre WW1 army - serving in Gibraltar Played for Metrogas non league 1911 on leaving Turned pro for Millwall 1911-20 - 113 apps 65 goals Welsh international - 5 caps 1 goal Davis was a deadly finisher, with exceptional speed and ball control and in the 1912–13 season, he emerged as a "goalscoring sensation" and soon attracted "fabulous offers" from Football League clubs. 1914 FACup v Bradford City - The goal he scored against Bradford was considered by many to be the best ever scored at The Den and was described by the national papers as a "wonder goal"; he received the ball from a throw-in around the half-way line, sidestepped his marker, beat both full-backs and then slipped the ball past the keeper into the net. During WW1 Davis served in Italy with the Bedfordshire Regiment where he incurred injuries to his legs. During the war he occasionally turned out for Millwall, including in a match against Clapton Orient in which he scored a hat-trick wearing army boots. Davis was forced to retire from football early in 1919 as a result of an injury to his knee and took up employment as a groundsman with Chelmsford before working as a labourer in the London docks. He was found drowned in Bow Creek on 20 May 1937 in mysterious circumstances as he was a strong swimmer. The coroner’s jury recorded an open verdict. Hosted on Acast. SHOW NOTES Bert Banks (clubs first England international) - Herbert Banks - photo Born Coventry 1874 - Died Smethwick 1947 Played football for the Seaforth Highlanders whilst serving in India 1897 Everton - left winger Third Lanark - left half 1899 Millwall - inside left 1898-99 5 apps 0 goals 1899-00 47 apps 26 goals 1900-01 38apps 25 goals Leading scorer in the Southern League Played for England 3-0 Ireland March 1901 Banks was a short man, tendency to put on weight - suspended in 1899 by the club for carrying too much weight. Known for his ‘boundless’ energy however. 1899-00 he scored four in a cup tie (first MFC player to do so) - Millwall Athletic 7-0 Clapton FAC 3Q 28.10.1899 Returned to his native Midlands Aston Villa 1901 - then Bristol Rovers FC, making forty League appearances, scoring eighteen times, as well as a 5s. fine for kicking in a door after a cup match with neighbours, Bristol City FC. He was out injured for a period, after being knocked down and run over by a cab whilst running for a tramcar in January 1902. Watford 1903 (at Watford he scored a goal a game) - Corporal Banks' WWI Service Record states that when he enlisted in the army in August 1914, he was forty years old and three months. After leaving football he worked as a warehouseman for a screw making / engineering firm Debut - Millwall 1-0 Gravesend Southern League 08.04.1898 Playing for Aston Villa, Banks took part in the first game at the near miraculous creation of the North Greenwich ground 1901. John Calvey (Born Stockton 23 June 1875 – 1937) was an English international who played as a centre-forward. Stockily built, 5’11” - he was a fast and clever ball player Born in South Bank, near Middlesbrough Signed aged 19, after a Millwall win over Reading, expressed doubts at the time that he was good enough to play in the team! Scored a debut hat-trick in an 8-1 Southern League win over Ilford 15.02.1896 1896-97 scored 33 goals inc 5 in one win over Wolverton. Played for The South v The North trial match 1899 Played for England v Ireland as a N Forest player 1902 Second spell for the Lions 1904-05 ‘overweight and playing on past reputation’ - just 3 goals from 36 apps Worked as a docker after giving up football. Below is part of the official press release from today: Players and fans are Prostate United as they sign up to largest UK grassroots football fundraiser * Millwall fan William Kilgannon, together with keeper Lukas Jensen and former captain Paul Robinson call on Lions fans to join them to save men’s lives this October. * William, 22, is honouring his late father, Brian, who was diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer in 2013, the year Millwall FC dedicated their front of shirt sponsorship to the charity. * In 2015 Brian, William’s late father, made an award-winning film called ‘Don’t fear your foe’ to speak to Millwall fans and the wider football community about the dangers of the most common cancer in men. * This autumn a special film will premier featuring William honouring his dad’s legacy. * Today, prostate cancer is the only major cancer without a screening programme and Will, together with Lukas, Paul and the club are calling on fans to back them this October to raise money to save men’s lives. * Prostate United is the UK’s biggest grassroots football fundraiser, challenging fans to walk, run or cycle every day in the month of October while representing their favourite club. * Fans can sign up by visitingprostateunited.prostatecanceruk.org or searching Prostate United online. Everyone raising £500 will receive a limited edition Prostate United football shirt. We fear no foe.
