2ND KINGS 4:1-7 NKJV 1 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” 2 So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” 3 Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few.  4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” 5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out.  6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased.  7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” - faith is the “sense” that gives us evidence of the invisible, spiritual world. - If you have the substance before you or if you can see it, there is no use for faith. Faith is needed for what we can’t see and can’t touch. - Faith is not a bare belief or intellectual understanding. It is a willingness to trust in, to rely on, and to cling to. - The great examples of godliness all had different circumstances and personalities, but they all had one thing in common – faith. - They needed a good testimony, and so they needed these examples of faith to break them out of discouragement. - The difference between the sacrifice of Cain and the sacrifice of Abel (⁠Genesis 4:3-5⁠) was not between animal and vegetable. The difference was that Abel’s sacrifice was made by faith. - This is the basic faith required of any who seeks God.  - We must believe that God is there, and that He will reveal Himself to the seeking heart. HEBREWS 11:1-7 NKJV 1 Now faith is the [a]substance of things hoped for, the [b]evidence of things not seen.  2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. 3 By faith we understand that the [c]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.  6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. - faith is the “sense” that gives us evidence of the invisible, spiritual world. - If you have the substance before you or if you can see it, there is no use for faith. ISAIAH 49:14-18 NKJV 14 But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me,And my Lord has forgotten me.” 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child,[j]And not have compassion on the son of her womb?Surely they may forget,Yet I will not forget you.16 See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;Your walls are continually before Me.17 Your [k]sons shall make haste;Your destroyers and those who laid you wasteShall go away from you.18 Lift up your eyes, look around and see;All these gather together and come to you.As I live,” says the Lord,“You shall surely clothe yourselves with them all as an ornament,And bind them on you as a bride does. LESSONS TO LEARN (ISAIAH 49:14-18) - The LORD’s affection for His people is greater than the devotion a woman has for her nursing child. - God is always mindful of the condition of His people, despite the objections of a doubting Zion. - Because God loves and rejoices over Zion, He will protect them. Though they were conquered before by the Babylonians, the day will come when He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. ISAIAH 62:6-7 6 I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;They shall [f]never hold their peace day or night.You who [g]make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent,7 And give Him no rest till He establishesAnd till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. LESSONS TO LEARN (ISAIAH 62:6-7) i. The Lord Himself does not rest with regard to Zion ii. He does not want His petitioners to keep silence in their prayers for Israel iii. And He does not want His people to leave Him alone concerning Israel’s deliverance. CONTINUATION - The watchmen have a constant duty. - The watchmen are not critics; they are prayer warriors, who constantly pray, giving God “no rest” until God’s people and His city are restored. ISAIAH 62:11 11 Indeed the Lord has proclaimedTo the end of the world:“Say to the daughter of Zion,‘Surely your salvation is coming;Behold, His reward is with Him,And His [h]work before Him.’ ” - When the Lord visits you everyone will know that you were valued and chosen by God. MATTHEW 5:13-16 NKJV 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. LESSONS TO LEARN FROM SALT - Disciples are like salt because they are precious. In Jesus’ day, salt was a valued commodity. Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with salt, giving rise to the phrase “worth his salt.” - Disciples are like salt because they have a preserving influence. - Disciples are like salt because they add flavor. Christians should be a “flavorful” people. - Salt must keep its “saltiness” to be of any value.  LESSONS TO LEARN FROM LIGHT - Jesus gives the Christian both a great compliment and a great responsibility when He says that we are the light of the world, - Light of the world means that we are not only light-receivers, but also light-givers. We must have a greater concern than only ourselves, and we cannot live only to ourselves; we must have someone to shine to, and do so lovingly. - Jesus never challenged us to become salt or light. He simply said that we are – and we are either fulfilling or failing that given responsibility. - A key thought in both the pictures of salt and light is distinction. NOTE: - Salt is needed because the world is rotting and decaying, and if our Christianity is also rotting and decaying, it won’t be any good. Light is needed because the world is in darkness, and if our Christianity imitates the darkness, we have nothing to show the world.  - The purpose of light is to illuminate and expose what is there. Therefore light must be exposed before it is of any use – if it is hidden under a basket, it is no longer useful. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’ ” 2 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord,  3 and said, “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a [a]loyal heart, and have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. JOHN 20:1-10 NKJV 1 Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.  2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” 3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb.  4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.  5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.  6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there,  7 and the [a]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.  8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.  9 For as yet they did not [b]know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.  10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. - The love of Jesus does not separate us from the common necessities and infirmities of human life. Men of God are still men. - To know Jesus is to know resurrection and life; to have Jesus is to have resurrection and life. - Death comes to the ungodly man as a penal infliction, but to the righteous as a summons to his Father’s palace: to the sinner it is an execution, to the saint an undressing. Death to the wicked is the King of terrors: death to the saint is the end of terrors, the commencement of glory. EPHESIANS 4:9-16 NKJV 9 (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also [d]first descended into the lower parts of the earth?  10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,  12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the [e]edifying of the body of Christ,  13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;  14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,  15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. - He Himself: This means that Jesus established these offices. They are the work and appointment of Jesus, not men, the offices themselves are a Divine institution and not a human invention. i) Apostles, who are special ambassadors of God’s work,  ii) Prophets, who speak forth words from God iii) Evangelists, who are specifically gifted to preach the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. iv) Pastors and teachers,  who shepherds the flock of God primarily through teaching the Word of God. “Teaching is an essential part of the pastoral ministry; - The purpose of these gifts of leadership is also clear. It is that saints (God’s people) might be equipped for the work of ministry (service), so that the body of Christ would be built up (expanded and strengthened). - The primary purpose of the Church isn’t to convert sinners to Christianity, but to perfect (complete and mature) the saints for the ministry and edification of the Body. - Till we all come to the unity of the faith: This is the first goal of God’s work through the gifted offices and equipped saints.  - And of the knowledge of the Son of God: When the gifted offices work right and the saints are properly equipped, Christian maturity increases and there is greater intimacy in the experience of God. - The gifted offices and equipped saints bring the saints to maturity, according to the measure of Jesus Himself. As years pass by, we should not only grow old in Jesus, but more mature in Him as well, as both individuals and as a corporate body. - The gifted offices and equipped saints result in stability, being firmly planted on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. - Another way maturity is described is as the growing up into Jesus, who is the head. Again, this defines the direction of maturity. We never grow “independent” of Jesus, we grow up into Him - The evidence of maturity – that the leaders and the saints are all doing their job – is this effective working - This means every part and joint provides what it can supply in a coordinated effort. JOHN 6:52-57 NKJV 52 The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.  54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.  55 For My flesh is [k]food indeed, and My blood is [l]drink indeed.  56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. - There is no salvation, redemption or atonement without sacrifice, therefore; there is no sacrifice without the shedding of the blood. - The old covenant was a shadow of the substance that is the new covenant. ie. Shadow in the meaning that the law communicated the outline and the figure of fulfillment to come in Jesus, but was not the very image of the things - The old covenant itself was insufficient to bring total cleansing from sin and to save. - Every repeated sacrifice was a reminder of sins. It brought consciousness of sins to the people again and again. - Animal sacrifice under the old covenant could cover sin but only the blood of Jesus, the perfect sacrifice could take away sins. - The high call for godly living makes sense in light of the price that was paid for our redemption. - Life depends on blood, is preserved by blood, and is nourished by blood. When enough blood leaves a body, life leaves a body. THE BLOOD 1. The blood overcomes Satan’s accusations. Those accusations mean nothing against us because Jesus has already paid the penalty our sins deserved.  2. The word of their testimony overcomes Satan’s deception. Knowing and remembering the work of God in their life protects them against Satan’s deceptions. 3. Loving not their lives overcomes Satan’s violence. If they do not cling to their own earthly lives, then there really is no threat Satan can bring against them.
