Description

When Afrikka Hardy was strangled in 2014 it seemed completely random, but it wasn’t. It was part of a pattern.

Four years earlier, reporter Thomas Hargrove had created an algorithm to detect serial killers and flagged Gary, Indiana as the site of an unusual number of strangulations.

But when Hargrove reached out to warn local police, he was ignored -- until Afrikka Hardy was murdered, and those cold cases suddenly didn’t look so cold.

Algorithm follows the investigation into Afrikka’s murder, exposing the warnings that police ignored, and uncovering more than anyone expected -- that a serial killer was strangling women in Gary, Indiana could've been stopped. And that Afrikka Hardy should be alive today.

This podcast will explore how technology can be used to identify and track serial killers, and how an algorithm can influence the way homicides are investigated all across the country.

Another possible reason for lower clearance rates is that with DNA technology advances, it’s harder to convict innocent people than it was in the past.

This is such an important question..what can we do with sexual offenders after they have served time? Some can identify they are a threat and will purposely try and remove themselves from temptation but for those who can't is anyone guess of when or if they'll strike again. I do believe offenders are in fact "sick". Whether born that way or created at a young age they deserve to be helped and evaluated and if it's irreversible then something needs to be done to keep them from offending again. I don't know statistics but my gut feeling is this need to sexually assault is a larger number than we can fathom. Extremely scary.

the info about the lack of action on the previous woman that got away is unfortunately probably common. the info about the rape kit backlog was not surprising but causes questions.

The presentation being awful is one thing but the pacing is atrocious. The whole story is like 80 minutes worth of information but because of the bad pacing and the exorbitant number of ads it lasts all these episodes. TenderfootTV is notorious for this. Just get funding some other way instead of having 25 percent of a 30 minute episode being cheery ads.

It’s pretty sick that the cops are casually joking about what a great hunting ground Florida is with a serial killer.

confused with the story of how Von and the gas and his ex. it says the cops told the other guy to get away from him so the cops would have been right there with him outside. how the hell did he get to his ex inside a house he had to kick down the door to get into? what the hell the cops doing? watching him kick in the door to gain a hostage... doesnt make any sense at all.
