This week I'm talking about the 1952 Washington DC UFO FlapIn July 1952, the skies over Washington D.C. became the focus of one of the most extraordinary UFO episodes in American history. Over two separate weekends, unidentified targets appeared on radar around the nation’s capital, experienced air traffic controllers reported unusual movements, airline pilots described strange lights, and United States Air Force fighters were sent into the area in an attempt to find out what was happening.The location alone made the case impossible to ignore. These were not reports from a remote area or isolated countryside. The activity was taking place close to the political and military centre of the United States, with radar contacts appearing near some of the most sensitive airspace in the country. At the height of the Cold War, any unknown object moving around Washington had the potential to become a serious national security concern.What makes the case particularly interesting is the combination of radar observations and visual reports. Controllers using separate radar systems reported unusual targets, while pilots and military personnel also described lights behaving in unexpected ways. On more than one occasion, fighter aircraft were directed towards the unknown contacts, yet no definite interception was achieved.The events quickly became front-page news and placed the United States Air Force under considerable pressure to explain what had happened. Officials eventually pointed towards unusual atmospheric conditions, including temperature inversions, as a possible explanation for some of the radar returns. Critics of that explanation have argued that it does not fully account for all the visual sightings or the apparent agreement between some of the radar contacts and what witnesses reported seeing in the sky.This episode looks closely at what actually happened during those two weekends in July 1952, the response from radar operators and military pilots, and the official attempts to explain the activity afterwards.More than seventy years later, the Washington D.C. UFO Flap remains one of the best-known cases from the early years of the modern UFO era. The Falcon Lake Incident remains one of the most discussed UFO cases in Canadian history, not simply because of what Stefan Michalak said he saw, but because of the unusual physical evidence and official attention that followed.In this episode, I take a closer look at the wider significance of the case and why it continues to stand apart from many other reports from the 1960s. Michalak was not describing a distant light or a brief object in the sky. His account involved a close-range encounter, physical injury, damaged clothing, a reported landing site, and later investigation by Canadian authorities.The case has remained important to UFO researchers because several different strands of evidence came together around a single event. There were Michalak’s own detailed descriptions, the marks on his body, the condition of his clothing, the reported effects at the site, and the later discovery of material that attracted further attention. At the same time, the object itself was never conclusively identified.I also look at Michalak as a witness and at the way his background influenced how he interpreted the experience. Rather than immediately describing the object as extraterrestrial, he initially tried to understand it as a machine and considered the possibility that it was some form of experimental aircraft. That practical response has become an important part of how the case is remembered.Falcon Lake is a fascinating example of why some UFO reports survive long after the original headlines have faded. This week I'm talking to Lesley Mitchell-Clarke about her book 'Intersections: A True Story of Extraterrestrial Contact'.I never thought it would be me.
