Description

There are a thousand podcasts you can listen to. This one listens back.

Alive with Steve Burns continues the conversation you began all those years ago. Back then it was letters and numbers and graham crackers. Now it’s death, sex, taxes, and all the big, messy questions of being alive. Why does money stress us out? Is the American dream dead? What’s the future of truth?

Each week, a new guest drops by Steve’s window for a genuine and respectful dialogue between two people just trying to figure it out, together.

Funny, tender, and just a little weird, this show invites you to sit down and think with Steve once again and wonder… what it really means to be Alive.

Alive with Steve Burns premieres September 17. New episodes every Wednesday wherever you get podcasts, and full video at www.youtube.com/@AlivewithSteveBurns

What if grief isn’t something to fix but something to understand? In this episode, psychotherapist Megan Devine breaks down the truth about loss, why we’re so uncomfortable with it, and how our culture gets grief completely wrong. From the myth of “moving on” to the pressure to feel better on a timeline, this conversation challenges everything we think we know about healing. Steve and Megan explore how trying to control or minimize grief often makes things worse. Megan offers a more honest, practical way to live with loss, support others, and stop judging ourselves for how we feel.  --------------------------------------------------------------------- ** if you like this episode, then check out these ** What is Dying with Nurse Julie https://youtu.be/DXMdWpFTNhY Preparing for the End with Alua Arthur https://youtu.be/vUh2qoNjhkQ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Alive with Steve Burns - Season One Episode 27 | Megan Devine Instagram: @alivewithsteveburns TikTok: @alivewithsteveburns --------------------------------------------------------------------- There are a thousand podcasts you can listen to. Blake Mycoskie opens up about building TOMS Shoes, chasing success, and still feeling empty. He unpacks the hidden cost of validation, the crash that followed, and how he’s redefining purpose, connection, and what it actually means to feel like enough. Together, Steve and Blake dig into the quiet pressure of chasing validation, how identity gets tangled up in achievement, and the crash that can follow when external rewards stop delivering. Blake talks candidly about the crushing toll it took on his mental health, and his long path to finding a greater sense of inner peace.  --------------------------------------------------------------------- ** if you like this episode, then check out these ** Rainn Wilson on Faith https://youtu.be/8Vid5ZHaBlg Depression with Jessi Gold https://youtu.be/U4KGIjd9LY0 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners: Get 15% off your first order plus free shipping at BollAndBranch.com/alive with code “alive”. Steve sits down with media psychology expert Rebecca Tukachinsky Forster to break down parasocial relationships, the one-sided connections we form with TV hosts, creators, and public figures. From childhood TV to social media, they explore why these connections feel real and how easily we trust them. They also look at how these connections can comfort, teach, and even help us feel less alone – and where they can drift into unrealistic expectations. Along the way, Steve turns the lens on himself, asking what it really means to build a relationship through a screen. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ** if you like this episode, then check out these ** Why Everyone is Choosing to Stay Single - with Eric Klinenberg https://youtu.be/V3_3xYpS108 Depression - with Jessi Gold https://youtu.be/U4KGIjd9LY0 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners: Get 15% off your first order plus free shipping at BollAndBranch.com/alive with code alive. Adam Savage sits down with Steve to discuss the future of facts, the scientific method, busting myths, and  he gives us a peek inside his legendary workshop.   Adam Savage is a veteran special-effects artist and maker whose early film work led him to co-host MythBusters, where his blend of engineering chops and gleeful chaos became a cultural staple. Currently he hosts Tested, his workshop-driven platform for builds, problem-solving, and general mischief. He’s a relentless advocate for curiosity, craftsmanship, and learning by doing—even if “doing” occasionally involves fire.   You can follow Steve Burns @steveburnsalive on Instagram.   Watch full episodes of Alive on YouTube.   Stay up to date with Lemonada on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram at @LemonadaMedia.    If you haven’t yet, now is a great time to subscribe to Lemonada Premium. Is depression actually increasing or are we misunderstanding what it really is? Steve Burns sits down with psychiatrist and bestselling author Dr. Jessi Gold to unpack why depression is often confused with everyday sadness, burnout, or stress.   Is social media and modern life shaping the way we talk about mental health?   Why do so many people seem “fine” while quietly struggling?    And how is self-diagnosis changing the conversation?    It’s a thoughtful, honest discussion about what depression actually looks like and why getting the definition right matters.   --------------------------------------------------------------------- ** if you like this episode, then check out these **   Is There a Loneliness Epidemic  https://youtu.be/V3_3xYpS108   Happiness   https://youtu.be/onhtAqXVcHA   --------------------------------------------------------------------- Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners:   Visit childrenincorporated.org to choose a child to sponsor today.   Go to zocdoc.com/alive to find and instantly book a doctor you love today.    Text STEVE to 64000 to get a FREE pocket pivot and their 10-pattern sprayer with the purchase of ANY size Copper Head hose. Nearly 30% of households in the United States are now single-person homes. In this episode, Steve Burns talks with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg about why more people are living alone than ever before - and what that shift means for relationships, happiness, and society.   From the psychology of solitude to the role of technology and dating apps, they explore how our relationships are evolving and why living alone doesn’t always mean being lonely. A fascinating look at one of the biggest social changes of our time. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ** if you like this episode, then check out these **   Preparing For End of Life  https://youtu.be/vUh2qoNjhkQ   Happiness   https://youtu.be/onhtAqXVcHA   --------------------------------------------------------------------- Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners: You can try ZipRecruiter FOR FREE at ziprecruiter.com/alive.  Go to Midea.com to see how you can bring home a little wow today.  Head to MarleySpoon.com/offer/ALIVE for 45% off your first order and free delivery. Angela Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson, the creative forces behind Blue’s Clues, join Steve Burns for a 30-year reunion that goes far beyond nostalgia. They go deep behind the scenes to share never before heard stories.    Why did they cast Steve?   How the show almost didn’t make it to air.     The spinoff you never heard about.   They also discuss why  pauses mattered more than punchlines, how Mr. Rogers directly shaped the show’s DNA, and the risk of telling preschoolers, “You can do anything.” It’s a deep dive into how it all happened and why the impact still resonates decades later.   —---------------------------------------------------------------------   ** if you like this episode, then check out these ** How to be Happier https://youtu.be/onhtAqXVcHA   Is Charisma Dangerous   https://youtu.be/feh3bAha3P0   ——————————————— Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners:   Sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial today at shopify.com/alive.   Go to bioptimizers.com/alive and use my exclusive code ALIVE15 to get 15% off any order.   Sign up and get 10% off at http://betterhelp.com/stevealive.    ——————————————— Alive with Steve Burns - Season One Episode 22 | Angela Santomero & Traci Paige Johnson   Instagram: @alivewithsteveburns   TikTok: @alivewithsteveburns   ————————————————   There are a thousand podcasts you can listen to. The legendary Bill Nye joins Steve Burns for an honest, fun, and - occasionally unsettling - conversation about one deceptively simple question: how do people decide what’s true? Nye breaks down why intellectual shortcuts are so tempting, why conspiracy thinking spreads so easily, and why the scientific method remains the most reliable tool for separating fact from fiction.  And they reflect on whether they failed their mission to educate audiences. —---------------------------------------------------------------------   ** if you like this episode, then check out these ** Is AI Gonna Eat The World  https://youtu.be/q6oRIoA9TBs   The Dangers of Charisma  https://youtu.be/feh3bAha3P0   ——————————————— Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners:   For a limited time only, go to drinkag1.com/alive to get a FREE AG1 Flavor Sampler and AGZ Sampler to try all the flavors, plus FREE Vitamin D3+K2 and AG1 Welcome Kit with your first AG1 subscription order! In this episode, Steven talks with death doula Alua Arthur about how to prepare for the end of life before it becomes an emergency, and why doing so is one of the most generous things you can do for the people you love.   They walk through what end-of-life planning actually entails: wills, advance directives, healthcare proxies, power of attorney, medical decisions, and how to have these conversations with your family before a crisis forces them. Alua breaks down what matters most, what’s often misunderstood, and where people tend to get stuck.   This grounded, honest conversation about mortality also explores grief, regret, family dynamics, and why so many end-of-life choices are made for the comfort of the living rather than the wishes of the dying.  Alua explains how you can find peace from planning, break through this award subject with loved ones, and maybe even  live life a little more mindfully.   ** if you like this episode, then check out these ** What is Dying  https://youtu.be/DXMdWpFTNhY Why Money Stresses Us Out  https://youtu.be/-F7hR9k4EiI ———————————————   Alive with Steve Burns - Season One Episode 18 | Alua Arthur   Instagram: @alivewithsteveburns TikTok: @alivewithsteveburns ————————————————   Exclusive Offers For Our Listeners:   BetterHelp makes it easy to get matched online with a qualified therapist. ** DON’T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE NOW**   What does masculinity actually mean in a world where the old rules no longer seem to apply?    Social scientist Richard Reeves joins the show for a clear-eyed, data-driven conversation about why so many men feel untethered - and why the loudest online answers are mostly wrong. From “strength under control” to the quiet crisis facing boys and young men, this is a conversation about purpose, identity, and what masculinity is for, not what it’s against.   We explore why rapid economic and social change has left many men without a clear script, how online culture amplifies extreme reactions, and why boys and young men are quietly struggling in education, work, mental health, and social connection.   Exclusive Deals for our listeners –   Head to MarleySpoon.com/ALIVE for up to 25 FREE meals! Why are we so easily persuaded by charisma? In this episode, historian and writer Molly Worthen talks about the strange, magnetic force we call charisma and why it’s having such a moment right now.    Why aren’t facts more persuasive?    When does inspiration slide into manipulation?    How do you know when a story is moving  you or using you?    This isn’t about charm or “rizz.” It’s about storytelling, certainty, and the deep human need to feel part of something bigger.   Exclusive Deals for our listeners –   Head to MarleySpoon.com/ALIVE for up to 25 FREE meals!   Go to quince.com/alive for free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.   Go to this exclusive web address right now to try ZipRecruiter FOR FREE: ziprecruiter.com/alive. What does happiness mean and why do negative emotions matter more than we think?   In this thoughtful conversation, Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of The Happiness Project and host of the Happier podcast, joins Steven Burns to explore what it really means to live a meaningful life. Rather than chasing constant positivity, Gretchen makes the case for embracing the full emotional spectrum - sadness, envy, regret, and melancholy - as essential tools for insight, growth, and wisdom.   If you’ve ever wondered why you’re not happy all the time, this episode is for you.   Exclusive Deals for our listeners –   BetterHelp makes it easy to get matched online with a qualified therapist. Steve was a recently guest on the podcast Origin Stories and we wanted to share the episode with you. Origin Stories is the ultimate podcast for anyone curious about the workings of the creative mind. Each week, journalist Matthew Shaer talks to a different writer or director about the creation of a work close to their own hearts (and to ours). Nothing is off the table: not the frustrations and the joys, not the setbacks and the successes. In this episode, Steve talks to Matthew about the creation of Alive With Steve Burns, and the learning curve involved in experimenting with a new medium. "I watched like 40 hours of Dick Cavett and then I realized that was not useful to this forum in any way," he says. "And that I'd probably be better off taking some improv classes and understanding what journalism is. Right now, it seems like it's improvisational journalism if it's anything. But I'm still flailing around in a sea of fear when I'm here." This week, we’re taking a deep breath for the holidays, so we’re sharing an episode of Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know. Hasan sits down with documentary legend Ken Burns for a conversation that feels a bit like American history class — if history class were funny, generous, and quietly profound. Ken joins Hasan to talk about his new film on the American Revolution, the stories we choose to tell about ourselves as a country, and why all our dads love him so much. It’s a warm, curious, and unexpectedly funny conversation about history, memory, and the people we turn to when we’re trying to understand who we are. If you want to hear more episodes, follow Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know wherever you get your podcasts or head to: https://lemonada.lnk.to/HasanMinhajDoesntKnowfd See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

No, money doesn't buy happiness, but as an individual who lives with AuDHD, money affords me the ability to deal with burn out, because life and bills don't stop even though I'm completely overwhelmed and need to shut down. It's hard surviving in a corporate world, so that I can survive the rest of the world.

When it came to Steve from Blues Clues for me, felt like a baby sitter ultimately. There was a bond and still is a bond but I knew the illusion was always there. Parasocial relationships didn't really dawn on me til the Supermega controversy. I didn't realize how attached I truly was and how I really didn't know them so when stuff came out and the apology videos, it felt to me like a breakup and I was hurt. But taking time to reflect on the thoughts and emotions like a breakup worked... Weird.

I can't Steve, I want to, I love Blue's Clues and I am trying to enjoy the behind the scenes look but I can't tolerate the talking over each other.

Not wanting to watch your dog suffer is not what I would consider "selfish," and with all love and respect, as an in-home-euthanasia veterinarian, please don't discourage people from euthanasia in this way.
