Is Gen Z actually disliking discovery calls — or is that just the story everyone in the wedding industry is telling themselves right now? With 51% of engaged couples now Gen Z and only 15% of them saying they actually enjoy phone calls, it's easy to assume texting is about to replace the discovery call entirely. But if you're rethinking your entire client booking process because of a stat, I want you to hear this first: the research doesn't say couples have stopped wanting to talk to their wedding photographer. It says something much more useful about when they want to talk to you, and what already has to be true before they ever say yes to a call. In this episode, I'm breaking down why couples don't walk into a discovery call to get information anymore — they've already checked your grid, your reviews, your pricing page, and sometimes even asked AI to help write the inquiry before you hear from them. I'll walk you through exactly what's changed about booking wedding clients across every generation (not just Gen Z), why your discovery call might be doing a job it was never built for, and the specific shift that helped my students Michele and Nicole book weddings worth thousands more than their original inquiry budget. In this episode of All Angles Photography Podcast, you will learn: Why the "Gen Z hates phone calls" narrative is missing the real shift happening across every generation of wedding clients What couples are actually doing before they ever send a photography inquiry — and why the discovery call isn't where you make a first impression How to name, structure, and calendar your discovery call so it stops feeling like an unwanted call Why texting and DMs can warm up a wedding inquiry but can't replace what happens on an actual call The Yes Ladder framework that's helping my students close discovery calls in minutes instead of weeks SHOW NOTES: https://clairehunt.co/blog/show-notes/are-discovery-calls-dead-why-texting-isnt-taking-over-yet/ WATCH ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/RTmN7QakvBU RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Grab your spot at the Sought After Photographer Challenge — the next challenge is October 12-16th, 2026! What actually moves you from 5K weddings to 15K or 25K weddings? John Bunn is joining today with the answer. John is a wedding photographer, filmmaker, and host of the Shifting Focus podcast. He's 20 years into weddings, averaging 25K to 30K per wedding, with a 60K photo and video booking on his calendar for next year – and he started at $500 a wedding in 2007, in Oklahoma, with no Instagram and no education industry to learn from. In this episode he breaks down what he calls the middle mindset, which isn't a price point at all but a way of running your calendar that keeps hardworking photographers booked, busy, and quietly burning out. He also walks through the three levers every photography business runs on – your work, your brand, and your network – and why most of us keep pulling the one we're already good at while the other two sit untouched. Then he tells the full story behind that 60K booking, and I promise it's not the story you're expecting. It starts at a rehearsal dinner running an hour and a half behind, with a decision he made that had nothing to do with money. We also get into the €2,000 wedding in Italy that he practically begged to shoot and how it turned into a $22,000 destination booking, why raising your prices works better in steps than in leaps, and why John says the middle market is actually harder to sell than the luxury market. If you're wondering how photographers are charging double, triple, even QUADRUPLE what you charge and how they got there, this one's for you, friend. In this episode of All Angles Photography Podcast, you will learn: What the "middle mindset" actually looks like on your calendar, and why it has almost nothing to do with what you charge The three levers behind every booking – your work, your brand, and your network – and how many you need to be exceptional in to reach each pricing tier The one-hour clarity exercise to do this week that tells you exactly which lever to pull next The full story behind John's 60K photo and video booking, from a rehearsal dinner to three weddings for one family How a €2,000 destination wedding in Italy led to a $22,000 booking in Charleston Why luxury couples buy differently than middle-market couples, and how to sell to each Show Notes: https://clairehunt.co/blog/show-notes/pricing-conversations-with-john-bunn/ And for a new way to experience the podcast, watch it here and subscribe on Youtube! What if the pricing range you're trying to rush your way out of is actually the most strategic place in the wedding photography industry to build from? So many photographers are sitting right in the $4–7K range, doing really well, and quietly believing they should be farther along by now – charging 8K, 10K, 15K, because that's what Instagram makes success look like. In this episode of the Pricing Conversations series, I'm making the case for why this range gives you more inquiries, real selectivity, and add-ons that actually sell, and why mastering it is what makes everything after it possible. We're talking about what the wedding day itself feels like in this range, the math of booking 20 weddings at 6K, and why your albums, film add-ons, engagement sessions, and extra coverage hours convert here more easily than anywhere else. I'm also sharing what genuinely changes the moment your starting price passes 7K – because a 10K photography business isn't a bigger version of the one you have now, it's a different business with a different client, a different acquisition strategy, and a different kind of currency. I wish someone had explained that to me before I made the jump myself. And then there's the part I think is the most important: the single most common thing that breaks a photography business that's already working is boredom. I'm sharing exactly what happened to one of my students when she changed what was converting, what it cost her, and what happened when she went back. Because familiar to you is brand new to your client, friend. In this episode of All Angles Photography Podcast, you will learn: Why the $4–7K range creates more inquiries and real selectivity, and how to find the pricing dead zone in your own market How to build add-ons and higher packages that couples genuinely want, so your average booking climbs without raising your base price What actually changes when you move past 7K – your point of contact, your acquisition, your client experience, your systems, and your positioning Why you should only change what's working when your numbers tell you to, and the three things to check before you raise your prices again Show Notes: https://clairehunt.co/blog/show-notes/pricing-conversations-the-4-7k-sweet-spot/ Featured Offerings or Resources Mentioned in this Episode: Join the Book It waitlist – doors open in October, and waitlist members get first access to a special surprise I'm offering for the first time ever Get the Discovery Call Script – my $67 Serve to Sell Framework™ for leading your discovery call with confidence, connection, and a natural close that doesn't feel salesy, including the full yes ladder training (podcast listener discount code: PODSQUAD) Join Scale It – for photographers ready to scale what's already working, including associate teams Episode 89: The Real Reason You're Not Booking at Your Current Prices Episode 93: How to Share Pricing as a Photographer Episode 65: The Difference Between a $5,000 Wedding Photographer and a $10,000 Wedding Photographer Claire's Instagram: @itsclairehunt
Ever wonder what it actually takes to become a sought after wedding photographer — the kind couples choose before they've even gotten on a call with you? In this episode, I'm sharing the most in-depth version of the beginning of my own story: how I went from a pediatric trauma nurse to a six-figure wedding photography business in under a year, how I moved my business across the country without losing a single week of momentum, and the exact shift that took one of my students from three years of silence in her inbox to booking $9,000 in three days. If you've ever felt invisible even while doing everything "right," or you're tired of getting ghosted after sending your pricing guide, this episode will change how you think about your own photography business marketing and messaging. In this episode of All Angles Photography Podcast, you will hear: How I replaced my nursing income and went full-time in photography in just three months — with nearly zero strategy in place My timeline behind scaling from $1,500 weddings to $6,500 weddings, including my first destination wedding and eight weddings booked in just one month What it actually took to move my wedding photography business across the country and prove it wasn't luck Why messaging — not visibility, not pricing — is usually the real reason couples choose someone else, and how one student booked $9,000 in three days by shifting her words alone SHOW NOTES: https://clairehunt.co/blog/show-notes/how-i-became-a-sought-after-wedding-photographer/ Featured Offerings or Resources Mentioned in this Episode: Register for Booked Before the Call — my live, one-time workshop on July 22nd, 2026 where I'll walk you through the real reason couples choose someone else, the positioning shifts that make you the obvious choice before a call ever happens, and how to build enough value in your words alone that your price becomes beside the point. If you've ever obsessed over your revenue number without actually understanding why your bookings are up or down, this episode is going to change how you see your entire photography business. We're breaking down the four hidden numbers most wedding photographers never track consistently — your website conversion rate, your contact page conversion rate, your inquiry to booking rate, and your call conversion rate — and showing you exactly how each one reveals where your business is quietly leaking clients. Revenue can only tell you what already happened. These four numbers tell you what to actually fix next. I'm walking you through real stories from my Book It students to show you what's possible when you finally understand your numbers instead of just guessing — from a student booking around 90% of her calls, to another who had a bride ready to book within five minutes of getting on the phone. I'm also sharing a personal story about hiring a nanny for my son that perfectly mirrors why speed and consistency in your inquiry response can make or break a booking. By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly which one number to start watching this week and what it's telling you about your photography business growth. In this episode of All Angles Photography Podcast, you will hear: Why your revenue alone can never tell you what to fix in your business — and what to track instead How to read your website conversion rate and contact page conversion rate to know if your website funnel is actually doing the selling for you Why your inquiry to booking rate matters more than ever in 2026, and how to stop losing warm leads in the gap between inquiry and booking How to raise your call conversion rate and lead a discovery call with confidence instead of hoping for a yes How to read all four numbers together so you know exactly where your one true leak is instead of guessing SHOW NOTES: https://clairehunt.co/blog/show-notes/hidden-numbers-that-determine-your-photography-business-success/ Featured Offerings or Resources Mentioned in this Episode: Apply for Book It — my signature mentorship program where we build all five foundations together: branding, marketing, website, pricing and sales, and client experience + organization.
