As a woman raised in an African/Muslim family, mental health was not a subject that ever came up. To be fair, there were a lot of other issues that were more pressing that you had to worry about then. It's almost silly to worry about being "sad" when you're so hungry you can barely think. Then there is the idea that as an African/Black woman you're automatically expected to be stronger and deal with all the obstacles put in your way and overcome them. This and many other factors combined made it seem like mental illness was a weakness; and do you really want to show any signs of weakness in a world that seems like it's just waiting for you to slip up? Take a listen and let me know what you think! And please don't hesitate to share your own experiences dealing with mental health and any tips that helped you overcome your struggles with me @alyas_aura on all social platforms.
