It took 12.5 years, but we’ve finally done it! Mark and Dan are thrilled to be joined by Joe Kelly, the current writer of The Amazing Spider-Man, whose history across the Spider-Man line of comics spans over two decades, going all the way back to his time writing Webspinners and 2099: World of Tomorrow. He was part of the Spidey-Braintrust of writers who rotated duties during the Brand New Day era, during which he wrote classics like “The Rage of the Rhino,” “American Son,” and “Grim Hunt.” For our specific purposes, he wrote one of Mark’s favorite comics, the time-traveling Deadpool (vol. 2) #11, in which Spider-Man revisits the events of Amazing Spider-Man #47. Since then, he’s written the hilarious Spider-Man/Deadpool series and miniseries like Non-Stop Spider-Man and Savage Spider-Man. His work across independent titles like I Kill Giants, Rex, Four Eyes, and Bad Dog is the stuff of legends, and these credits don’t even begin to scratch the surface of his TV work, which includes co-creating Ben-10 and even writing and producing Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man. This episode of the show wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our Patreon subscribers. This week’s Patreon podcasts include a review of Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 7) #14, and three episodes of the Whatever a Spider Can Diaries, which documents Dan’s process of writing a book about Spider-Man. The moral of these stories: Never go on vacation. In this episode, Dan and Mark revisit a series of strange experiments in the Marvel line that arose from the rising popularity of the graphic novel format. Comics were slowly being accepted as literature in the United States, which opened the door for new ways to package the stories of characters like Spider-Man, brought new artists to the books, and presented opportunities to do big stories with returning favorite creators. If you want to read along with our conversation, all of the books discussed are currently available on Marvel Unlimited. They were collected in print in a book called Spider-Man: The Graphic Novels and can be bought online on most major comic retailers, whether through reprints or in their original formats. The books we’ll be discussing are specifically: – The Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky (Marvel Graphic Novel #22) – The Amazing Spider-Man: Parallel Lives (Marvel Graphic Novel #46) – Spider-Man: Spirits of the Earth (Marvel Graphic Novel #63) – Spider-Man: Fear Itself (Marvel Graphic Novel #72) Watch our show on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOPCnjzQZNViyEnoOuckaVQ We would also love to see you join our Amazing Spider-Slack community board. The Next Generation of Comics: IMAGE! In this episode, Dan and Mark discuss the events that led to the singlemost impactful shakeup to the modern comics industry since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s invention of the Marvel Comics Universe. On the pages of the X-Men and Spider-Man line of comics, Marvel had been fostering the careers of superstar artists like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Erik Larsen. But, when these creatives led Marvel to unprecedented sales and cultural impact, they realized that perhaps they could go supernova, leave Marvel behind, upend the comics industry, and found their own independent comic book publishing company that we know know as Image Comics. But, as Mark and Dan are hardly encyclopedic experts on the early days of Image, they’ve brought on the UK’s most handsome dhampire, Image Comics expert Josh Sutton from the excellent YouTube channel examining comics and superhero media, Panels to Pixels! Enjoy Josh’s channel  @PanelstoPixels! Some say “three’s a crowd,” but here we say “three’s a Tri-Sentinel!” Join Dan and Mark as they take a page-by-page look at a favorite story from the Erik Larsen era of Amazing Spider-Man. That story is none other than “Power Prey!” but you may know it better as Amazing Spider-Man #329’s battle between the Captain Universe-possessed Spider-Man and the Tri-Sentinel. But this wouldn’t be one of our patented “Deconstructing” episodes if we weren’t joined by someone who worked on the comic. So, to help us discuss this Cosmic Spider-Man story, we are joined by Erik Larsen! This discussion is a deep dive on Amazing Spider-Man #329, written by David Michelinie and with pencils by Erik Larsen, inks by Andy Mushynsky, colors by Bob Sharen, letters by Rick Parker, and edited by Jim Salicrup. Phenomenal cosmic powers… but can’t afford his living space! In this episode, Mark and Dan discuss the first line-wide events that crossed over into Spider-Man comics, as Marvel began to realize, in the wake of SECRET WARS, just how much attention they could bring to their entire line of characters and titles if they could find big stories to anchor them around, if only for a moment in time. In the late eighties and early nineties, the shockwaves of the X-Men event entitled INFERNO and the Avengers and Fantastic Four event entitled ACTS OF VENGEANCE hit the entire line of Spider-Man comics. It set a precedent for his inclusion in a grander Marvel story, even at the cost of reshaping the stories occurring in his book. It’s good to be the King… In this episode, Mark and Dan talk about the return of Gerry Conway to the world of Spider-Man, as he took over writing duties on both Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man, after 13 years away from The Amazing Spider-Man. There, he would introduce new classic villains, like Tombstone, and tell a compelling yarn for over three years and 80 comics. If you want to read along with their conversation, they talk specifically about Spectacular Spider-Man issues #137-174, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #8-11, Web of Spider-Man #35-70, and Web of Spider-Man Annual #5 and 6. These haven’t been collected in many places, though there is an Omnibus collecting the first half of these stories. A smattering of them are available on the Marvel Unlimited app and in the store, but many of these will only be found, for the time being, as physical copies. But, their discussion of these stories wouldn’t be complete without a visit from the man himself, back for his 10th appearance on the Amazing Spider-Talk, they are joined by Gerry Conway! VENOM (Season 7, Episode 7)

Based on the Eminem song of the same name. In this episode, Mark and Dan talk about the meteoric impact that Venom made when he first appeared in the pages of Spider-Man comics. And what better way to capture that spirit than going back into the catalog and rereleasing an older episode of the Amazing Spider-Talk from January 1988, where Mark and Dan reviewed Amazing Spider-Man #300, the first appearance of Venom, when it first appeared on the spinner racks of local supermarkets. This episode was edited by Rick Coste, and the video version of this podcast was edited by Alex Galucki. Our artwork is handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, and Nick Cagnetti. Our theme songs were produced by Ryland Bojack, Tony Thaxton, and Spider-Maj. Josh Sutton of Panels to Pixels animated our animated introduction to the show.
