The first major battle of the island hopping campaign began in the Solomon Islands on August 7, 1942. American Marines come ashore at Guadalcanal and the surrounding islands in an effort to secure the region from Japanese control. Although the Marines make great progress in the coming days, the U.S. Navy suffered their worst defeat in history. The campaign to establish a foothold in the Southwest Pacific becomes a very costly and deadly six month operation for both sides involved. Just one month after the Battle of Coral Sea, Japanese and American forces lock horns over the Pacific for control of a tiny island much closer to the U.S. mainland. The Battle of Midway kicks off early in June 1942 when the underdog U.S. Navy responds to four, massive Japanese carrier groups attacking the Marines at Midway Atoll.
