In this podcast Martin Scott, expert in video, gaming and entertainment, and Oliver Bruff, expert in fixed broadband services, discuss the impact that the development of metaverse-type applications, such as cloud-rendered XR, will have on fixed network traffic and how these applications will create a need for operators to proactively manage in-home networks with AIOps.   Read the associated article.
Selling ICT services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be the main source of incremental revenue for operators, while their connectivity revenue will be effectively flat. However, operators will only earn a small share of revenue from the largest and fastest-growing of these services – public cloud solutions. Operators will hold a much larger, and growing, share of the SME cyber-security market. In this podcast, Matt Small and Catherine Hammond, experts in SME services, discuss why operators are in a good position to sell cyber-security solutions to SMEs and what the challenges are when doing this. Matt and Catherine also offer some recommendations for operators that have established enterprise security brands and for those that are mostly new to offering security. Satellite direct-to-device technology could solve the challenge of connectivity in remote areas. It is attracting interest from mobile network operators (MNOs), satellite operators and investors. However, is the technology ready to meet customers’ expectations? What is the revenue opportunity today and how will it evolve over time? Join the discussion with satellite and space experts, Lluc Palerm and Christopher Baugh. Learn more about our satellite strategies for telcos research programme and our report on the satellite direct-to-device market.
Mary Saunders, expert in private networks, and Daniel Beazer, expert in edge and media platforms, discuss Daniel’s recently published article on edge computing in Las Vegas. The city is not considered to be a technology hub but has become a hotspot for edge computing. Mary and Daniel together explore whether there are any lessons that operators and other edge builders can learn from the city’s edge activities or if it will all just have to ‘stay in Vegas’. Caroline Chappell, expert in cloud native technologies, explains that if operators are serious about network convergence (where siloed network domains are brought together into a single network entity to support new enterprise services such as network slicing and network-as-a-service), then they must acquire a cloud-native programmable network platform as a strategic priority for 2024. Read the associated article.
In this podcast, Caroline Chappell, expert in cloud-native technologies, discusses a key test for AT&T’s open network credentials. The question is whether AT&T will pair its cloud platform with RAN functions from Ericsson or opt for a third-party telecoms cloud platform. This decision will shape the future capability to run RAN functions from various vendors in the future. This podcast discusses why a horizontal cloud platform is necessary for Open RAN why high-capacity network operators (brownfield operators) need to take steps towards adopting Open RAN while incorporating openness into the process who the horizontal cloud platform contenders are for AT&T’s Open RAN deployment and who is best placed to win the prize. In the last decade, SpaceX has achieved a near-monopoly on the satellite launch market, due to aggressive moves, improved reliability and delayed competition. At the same time, the company has manufactured more satellites than any other operator for its Starlink constellation and is now planning to sell satellites via its Starshield programme. Given the challenges involved in satellite manufacturing and launch, and SpaceX’s dominance in the market, established and emerging players have shown considerable concern in competing in these markets. In this podcast, Christopher Baugh and Dallas Kasaboski, experts in satellite infrastructure, discuss the market landscape. They provide insights on how operators and vendors can learn from SpaceX’s trajectory in order to successfully compete in these dynamic growth markets. Learn more in the associated report.

Few commercial propositions for public 5G enterprise services are currently available, but most operators have the capabilities to launch at least a few. Large operators that want to maximise their returns from 5G enterprise services should be building 5G capabilities into their existing end-to-end propositions. For smaller operators, supporting partner services with high-value connectivity may be more appropriate, but even these operators should consider launching a few 5G propositions of their own. In this podcast, Catherine Hammond and Tom Rebbeck, experts in enterprise services, discuss the different options for operators to monetise public 5G enterprise services and how they can achieve their goals more quickly. The associated article can be accessed here.
