(0:00-0:40) Intro (0:41-5:37) Michigan at Big Ten Media Days (5:38-19:19) Donovan Edwards at Big Ten Media Days (19:20-27:06) Dan Lannign at Big Ten Media Days (27:07-34:06) Oregon LB Jeffrey Bassa joins the show (34:07-50:19) Washington Head Coach Jedd Fisch Joins (50:20-57:52) Indiana Head Coach Curt Cignetti Joins (57:53-58:37) Conclusion - See you next week! With all the talk about Ohio State’s offseason roster moves and Oregon’s entry into the Big Ten, it’s easy to forget that the Big Ten also is home to the defending national champs. Michigan visited Big Ten Media Days on Thursday and offered a reminder that while the Wolverines lost a lot of great players to the NFL, the cupboard isn’t bare. One potential breakout star is Donovan Edwards, who struggled through a disappointing 2023 season before exploding for 104 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries in the national title game win against Washington. Edwards talked Thursday about how he got through last season and how much he’s grown ahead of this season. Next, Andy breaks down Oregon coach Dan Lanning’s discussion of recruiting. Oregon has a big NIL war chest, but not an unlimited one. But does it bother Lanning that his recruiting success is credited to NIL deals when recruiting wins at Georgia or Ohio State are credited differently? After that, Oregon linebacker Jeffrey Bassa discusses the huge expectations for the Ducks. Then we look at the other side of the Oregon-Washington rivalry as new Huskies coach Jedd Fisch joins Andy to talk about rebuilding a team that won’t look anything like the one that played for a national title. Andy is then joined by another first-year coach — Indiana’s Curt Cignetti. Cignetti won big at James Madison, and he’s loaded the Hoosiers’ roster with veteran transfers who played well at the Group of 5 level. Will that method produce a quick start at a place not known for winning football? Want to watch the show instead? Join us M-F, LIVE, at 8 am et on YouTube! Everyone had a interesting story at Big Ten media days on Wednesday, so we’ll whip around the league. (0:00-3:21) Intro (3:22-12:15) James Franklin Joins (12:16-18:00) Deshaun Foster's Opening Statement (18:01-24:20) Deshaun Foster Interview (24:21-35:55) Lincoln Riley Entering Year 3 (35:56-37:15) Nebraska Discussion (37:16-43:07) Huskers Center Ben Scott Joins (43:08-50:54) Nebraska's Ty Robinson Joins (50:55-1:13:59) John Canzano joins (1:14:00-1:15:27) Conclusion Penn State coach James Franklin joins the show to discuss how new coordinators Andy Kotelnicki (offense) and Tom Allen (defense) will blend what they’ve done in the past with what Penn State players have done. Franklin also weighs in a classic Pennsylvania debate: Sheetz or Wawa? New UCLA coach DeShaun Foster’s opening statement got panned by the Internet, but the Internet should have listened to how Foster answered the questions he got about taking over the Bruins under less-than-ideal circumstances. Foster joined Andy to talk about replacing Chip Kelly and about how he reshaping UCLA’s recruiting operation. Next, Andy breaks down some of USC coach Lincoln Riley’s answers at media days. Riley says USC is still playing catch-up, which probably isn’t satisfying to hear as year three begins. But if Riley is right about the defense getting better under new coordinator D’Anton Lynn, then there should be reason for excitement. Later, Andy talks to Nebraska center Ben Scott and defensive tackle Ty Robinson about being huge. Finally, Andy sits down with John Canzano (JohnCanzano.com (http://JohnCanzano.com)) to break down how the Big Ten became this new version of itself. Want to watch the show instead? Ohio State was the main attraction on the first day of Big Ten media days, and the Buckeyes weren’t shying away from massive expectations or questions about their losing streak to Michigan. (0:00-1:18) Intro (1:19-6:38) An Update on the Jaden Rashada Suing Billy Napier Case (6:39-8:51) Spencer Holbrook from Lettermen Row Joins (8:52-14:02) Ryan Day chats with the guys from Lettermen Row (14:03-34:19) Continuing the Ohio State Discussion with Spencer (34:20-54:01) Geoff Schwartz Joins to talk USC, Oregon (54:02-1:00:27) Discussion on Washington Iowa (1:00:28-1:02:43) Conclusion - Bret Bielema's Tattoo First, Spencer Holbrook and Andy Backstrom of On3’s Lettermen Row talk to Day about the start of camp and the difficulty in choosing representatives from a team that could have a dozen captains. Next, Spencer joins Andy (Staples) to discuss the expectations surrounding Ohio State. Spencer also talks about the new dynamics as Day cedes offensive control to new coordinator Chip Kelly. Plus, how long will it be before Kansas State transfer Will Howard is named QB1? Later, Geoff Schwartz of SiriusXM joins Andy to discuss the new Big Ten. Geoff played at Oregon and is still getting used to being a Big Ten legend, but he has a lot of thoughts about Ohio State and its quest for a title and about why USC has not lived up to some lofty expectations in the early part of the Lincoln Riley era. Can the Trojans make a splash in year one in the Big Ten? Finally, Illinois coach Bret Bielema talks about his Iowa tattoo, because no Big Ten media days would be complete without the story. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips vowed on Monday that the conference will fight Florida State and Clemson as the league’s two best football-playing schools try to get out of the conference. This is as forceful as we’ve ever heard Phillips, but is it all bluster? (0:00-0:44) Intro (0:45-19:29) Jim Phillips at ACC Media Days (19:30-26:36) Connor Stalions Netflix Documentary (26:37-27:03) Dear Andy Intro (27:04-32:54) Does Ryan Day have to beat Michigan & win Big Ten? The doc is part of the UNTOLD series, which previously profiled Johnny Manziel and the Urban Meyer-era Florida teams. Will Stalions spill any secrets? Will anything new come out at all? Will he read from the manifesto? Next, Andy answers your questions. Among them… Just how bad does Ryan Day need to beat Michigan this year? And win the B1G? Eight SEC teams expect to make the College Football Playoff. Which one of those is finishing No. 8 in the conference (and definitely not making the CFP)? Send your questions to andystapleson3@gmail.com Kentucky’s offense has been trying to recapture the magic of 2021 for two seasons without much success, but the Wildcats have high hopes with a new transfer quarterback (Brock Vandagriff from Georgia) and a new coordinator (Bush Hamdan from Boise State). Hamdan joins the show to discuss how he made his way from Kuwait City to college football fields across America. Hamdan also explains his role in suggesting one of the most iconic plays in college football history. He also talks about the development of Vandagriff and Kentucky’s 2024 offense. Former Georgia tailback Todd Gurley also joins the show. Gurley discusses what it’s been like watching Georgia’s rise. He also explains how the 2012 SEC Championship Game taught him that he’d definitely make it in the NFL. Gurley also explains how happy he is for players who can now make NIL money, and he looks back on how strange it was that he once got suspended four games for signing autographs. Later, Andy previews ACC media days with questions for every ACC team. Yes, all 17 of them. Sample question: Are you sandbagging on us, Mack Brown? Want to watch the show instead? Kentucky defensive lineman Deone Walker is one of the most intriguing players in college football. He stands 6-foot-8, weighs 345 pounds and can dominate centers and guards but also is quick enough to rush off the edge against tackles. (0:00-3:22) Intro - Alabama naming field after Nick Saban? (3:23-4:29) Utah State fires Blake Anderson (4:30-9:33) Embracing the Hog? Next, Andy talks to Kentucky Sports Radio’s Nick Roush about the Wildcats’ chances to make noise in the SEC this season. Did coach Mark Stoops’ flirtation with the Texas A&M job alter the expectations this season? Also, Nick believes this team looks similar in makeup to the 2018 group that went 10-3. Later, Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com joins Andy to talk Texas A&M. The Aggies are one of the more fascinating teams in the SEC. They just made a coaching change, but because of Mike Elko’s recent experience in College Station, he doesn’t feel like a first-year head coach there. After inheriting a roster that still has some serious talent following Jimbo Fisher’s firing, can Texas A&M pull off some surprises in 2024? Want to watch the show instead? (1:02:15-1:10:02) Oklahoma DB Billy Bowman joins (1:10:03-1:10:44) Conclusion - See you tomorrow! Tennessee coach Josh Heupel joins the show from SEC Media Days to discuss how the Volunteers plan to take on the new version of the SEC. Tennessee’s defense is the deepest it has been since Heupel took over, and Nico Iamaleava looks ready to step in as QB1. Next, Andy and On3’s Jesse Simonton talk about where Tennessee fits in the SEC’s tiers. Alabama and Georgia are comfortably in the top tier, but who might be able to join them there in the 12-team College Football Playoff era? Later, SEC coordinator of officials John McDaid joins Andy to discuss how in-helmet communications might affect the game. McDaid also mentions a small rule change that could have a big effect on a game. Next, Oklahoma safety Billy Bowman joins to discuss the variety of a college football career that now moves from the Big 12 to the SEC. Andy is at SEC Media Days in Dallas, and Ole Miss and LSU dominated the conversation on Monday. (0:00-6:05) Intro with J.D. PicKell (6:06-10:27) Missouri Tigers Outlook (10:28-14:54) CFP's Format Ahead (14:55-28:32) Ole Miss Outlook (28:33-35:04) LSU Tigers Outlook (35:05-54:55) T-Bob Hebert Joins to discuss LSU (54:56-58:08) Conclusion, Georgia and Tennessee Discussion Andy and On3's J.D. PicKell break down what Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said as the Rebels prepare for perhaps the most-hyped season in program history. Ole Miss went 11-2 last season and then seriously upgraded the roster in the transfer portal. Will that be good enough to make the College Football Playoff and/or compete for the SEC title? New ESPN commentator Nick Saban seems to think so, but Kiffin thinks all this offseason praise is -- to use a Sabanism -- at poison. Andy and J.D. also discuss J.D.'s interview with LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Is it finally time for J.D. to put the Gumbo Gunslinger nickname to rest, or does Nussmeier like it? Next, former LSU center and current Baton Rouge radio host T-Bob Hebert joins Andy to talk Tigers. How will LSU use linebacker Harold Perkins Jr.? And can the Tigers get better on defense after completely retooling the coaching staff on that side of the ball? (54:31-58:24) Walking on in this era of CFB (58:25-1:02:00) Gap between schools like Kentucky and Georgia (1:02:01-1:03:28) Conclusion - Cam Rising's Eligibility Meanwhile, Deion Sanders took the stage at Big 12 media days, and he said something very interesting. Sanders essentially said he’s held to a higher standard than other coaches. But is he really? Andy explains. Sanders also seemed genuinely excited for this version of the Buffaloes. He’s confident they’ll be better than 4-8, and he explained why. Later, Andy breaks down Baylor coach Dave Aranda’s blunt assessment that the Bears are recruiting better because they are “paying players.” Next, it’s time for Dear Andy. You asked some great questions, including… Should the ACC get an automatic College Football Playoff bid if it loses Florida State and Clemson? Can Florida be better and that not reflect in the Gators’ record because of the difficulty of the schedule? Should a school pay its coach and AD less and send the difference to pay players? On3’s Pete Nakos joins the show to explain how Arch Manning and EA Sports drummed up even more free publicity with a brilliant strategy that involved some initial misdirection. (0:00-1:04) Intro (1:05-22:34) Mike Gundy at Big 12 Media Days (22:35-30:44) Pete Nakos Joins (30:45-43:54) Brett Yormark opening remarks at Big 12 Media Days (43:55-44:39) Wrapping up with Pete (44:40-50:37) Kansas State Outlook (50:38-51:54) Avery Johnson's Flow in EA Sports (51:55-56:07) Cam Rising on BYU vs Utah (56:08-57:18) Conclusion, Dear Andy tomorrow! andystapleson3@gmail.com But first, we’ve got to talk about what Mike Gundy said. The Oklahoma State coach appeared at Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday and explained why he’s not suspending star tailback Ollie Gordon following Gordon’s recent arrest on a charge of driving under the influence. Gundy did some beer math live on ESPN and the backlash came understandably quickly. Gundy has never worried too much about what anyone else thinks, and Andy wonders if Gundy has reached a point where he’s essentially in “screw it” mode. Andy also explains why the current state of things has put Gundy in a place where he can feel that way. Next, Pete joins the show to talk about Arch Manning’s EA Sports College Football 25 okey-doke. Plus, Andy and Pete break down some of the more interesting tidbits from Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark’s press conference at media days. Later, Andy examines more of what we learned at Big 12 Media Days, including the fact that Kansas State QB Avery Johnson doesn’t think the video game got his magnificent hair correct. Plus, Utah QB Cam Rising reminds everyone why the return of Utah-BYU as a conference game is going to be spectacular. Want to watch the show instead? Brennan’s Wildcats will be largely intact as they enter the Big 12, and a team led by quarterback Noah Fifita and receiver Tetairoa McMillan should have a chance to compete for the title in their new league. Brennan also discusses taking over a veteran-heavy team and what it’s like to be a coach recruiting Snoop Dogg’s son. Next, On3 VP of recruiting and transfer portal Steve Wiltfong stops by to discuss some of the big class of 2025 commitments from last week and some big names planning to commit in the next few weeks. Oregon got a commitment on July 4 from Duncanville, Texas, receiver Dakorien Moore, who is the highest ranked player to ever commit to the Ducks. He’s the type of player Oregon didn’t typically land before, but the Ducks’ 2025 class might wind up including the top-ranked or second-ranked (or both) player in the country at multiple positions. (0:00-2:50) Intro (2:51-9:06) Dakorien Moore Commits to Oregon (9:07-11:36) Remembering Khyree Jackson (11:37-13:27) Nebraska Coaching Staff Shuffle (13:28-17:40) Rest of the Week (17:41-43:59) Justin Hopkins from ScoopDuck joins (44:00-1:01:47) New Blood or Blue Blood Discussion (1:01:48-1:05:08) Conclusion, Recapping 4th of July Weekend Justin Hopkins of On3’s Scoop Duck joins Andy to discuss how Oregon has enhanced an already effective roster-building operation under coach Dan Lanning. Andy also wonders if Justin was correct last week when he wrote that Oregon isn’t a blueblood program yet but seems headed there. Andy wonders if the Ducks have possibly already crossed that threshold. More from Justin Hopkins and ScoopDuck here: https://www.on3.com/teams/oregon-ducks/ Justin also shares memories of former Oregon and Alabama cornerback Khyree Jackson, the Minnesota Vikings rookie who died in a car crash this past weekend. Later, Andy builds on that blueblood conversation. How do we define a blueblood? Who are the bluebloods now? And how does a newblood — a program that has enjoyed great recent success but doesn’t have a history of dominance — become a blueblood? Want to watch the show instead? (44:38-47:25) Does finishing in last place guarantee a coach gets fired? (47:26-51:02) Most Shocking: Georgia Tech winning ACC, USC winning Big Ten, or Oregon losing 3+ and missing CFP? (51:03-55:28) Average finish in recruiting rankings for a Big 12 team to compete? (55:29-1:01:07) Tastiest Mascots in CFB (1:01:08-1:02:39) Conclusion, Happy 4th of July! Andy examines the newest info drop from EA Sports. This time, it’s Dynasty Mode. What kind of coach will Andy choose to be? Will he try to recruit more from the high school ranks or take the Coach Prime/Lane Kiffin route? The possibilities look very intriguing. Next, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor joins the show to discuss the transition from high school coach so good they named the stadium after him to college head coach. Traylor explains the pros and cons of the transfer portal at his level, and he discusses how to hang on to good players when other programs come knocking. He also talks about how different it will be without stalwarts Frank Harris and Rashad Wisdom, who started all four of Traylor's previous seasons at UTSA. Then it’s time for your questions. Will the video game make people better fans or more annoying fans? Is finishing No. 16 (or No. 17 or No. 18) in a conference grounds for automatic firing? Which school has the tastiest mascot?
