During a September 3 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he clarified that the emphasis should be on the first syllable “DEN-zel” rather than what many believe. He explained that this mispronunciation became standard because his mom, Lennis Washington, needed a way to distinguish him from his father (who has the same name).
