"I wonder, all these mornings you've been sitting in my study, have you had any moments of stillness?" The Oscars are getting closer! On this episode, we look at two of the nominees for Best Picture. Filmmaker Johnnie Brannon joins the show to discuss Sound of Metal, and I give my review of The Father. Johnnie Brannon has been working as a filmmaker and musician for many years, and he runs the organization Made in Arkansas (who have a film festival coming up in May). 2021-03-0801:11:26

"I don't hate the man. Never will. I think he's a fantastic politician. But I don't think a fantastic politician is a compliment either." The 2020 documentary Boys State depicts a political experiment that takes place every year in Texas. Hundreds of 17-year-old boys gather and carry out a mock election cycle over a week's time, and in 2018 a group of filmmakers capture the whole thing. We break down the film and what it says about our current political situation, as well as what might be hopeful about the film. I'm joined by documentary filmmaker Obed Lamy, who grew up in Haiti and has an interesting perspective on American politics. I (Andrew) also have a unique perspective on the film, because I attended Arkansas Boys State when I was 17. It makes for a very interesting conversation! 2021-02-2237:30

"You're a wolf when you sleep and a girl when you're awake." The beautiful animated film Wolfwalkers is the subject of our discussion on this episode. It's a film about a young girl finding her place in the world who gets mixed up with some mysterious wolf walkers-- humans who can transform into wolves-- and finds herself at the center of the conflict between man and nature. The film comes from the Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon, from directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, and stars Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, and Sean Bean. I'm joined on this episode by filmmaker and animator Eric White, director of several short films and animator for Arkansas's local PBS station, AETN. Read a full episode transcript here. "What are the people of Bacurau called?" "People!" In this episode, we dig into the weird and wonderful Brazilian film Bacurau, from directors Juliano Dornelles and Kleber Mendonça Filho. This film blends western, horror, and sci-fi into an unforgettable film-watching experience complete with sharp political commentary. Nothing is at it initially seems in this film, but it is absolutely one of the best things to come out in 2020. "I hear about a summer camp for the handicapped run by hippies. Somebody said you probably will smoke dope with the counselors, and I'm like...sign me up!" Click here for a full episode transcript [https://arthousegarage.com/transcript-46-crip-camp/] In today's episode we look at the 2020 documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, which tells the story of a remarkable summer camp for teens with disabilities called Camp Jened that operated in New York State in the 70s. The film contains footage of the camp, and we get to know several of the campers, and then we follow them and see what they did in the decades following—and it is remarkable. The film has tons of info on disability advocacy and the history of people with disabilities fighting for fair treatment, and it makes a strong case that this fight is far from over. It's also incredibly entertaining, funny, and endearing as we witness the relationships between several of the campers and where those go over the years. My guest today is Kerri Michael. Kerri does a lot of things, she works for a film organization called Made in Arkansas, she's a yoga instructor, and a movie nerd like myself. She also works for Disability Rights Arkansas so I immediately thought of her when I watched this movie, and I knew she'd be a good person to have on the show with her combination of disability knowledge and cinema love. "History isn't here yet. It's coming, but maybe this time we can take it on our own terms." Today's episode centers around the latest from director Kelly Reichardt, a lovely film called First Cow. The film stars John Magaro and Orion Lee as a pair of friends in pioneer days who sell baked goods....using stolen ingredients. It's a film about friendship, history, opportunity and capitalism, and it's one of Arthouse Garage's best of 2020 [https://arthousegarage.com/top-10-movies-of-2020/]. Today's guest is filmmaker Connor Allen Smith, who brings his wonderful perspective on the film and gives some behind-the-scenes filmmaking knowledge about his own work. "Now yeah The Beatles, they're funny, but they ain't no Sam Cooke." We look at another probable awards season heavyweight this week with One Night in Miami. This is the directorial debut of Oscar-winning actor Regina King, and it tells the story of 4 legends of Black history and the time they all hung out together. In 1964, after an historic boxing match, Cassius Clay met up with Jim Brown, Malcom X and Sam Cooke. The script by Kemp Powers imagines what these four might have talked about that evening. It is an incredible film filled with wonderful performances and timely conversations, and it comes highly recommended by almost everyone who sees it.
