In 2015 Nancy Belmont launched a project called the Courage Wallthat captured the attention of national and international media. The Courage Wall is a huge public chalkboard that reads, “I WISH I HAD THE COURAGE TO . . . ®” Nancy was interviewed on the TODAY Show, was featured internationally on Al Jazeera Network, and was highlighted in print media including The Washington Postand Forbes Magazine. The project was even tweeted by First Lady Michelle Obama. In 2016, Nancy launched the UNITY Project, interactive public art that aims to bring people together to celebrate individuality and strengthen the ties that bind us together. The project went viral with an Upworthy video that captured over 8 million views. Nancy created a manual to empower others to bring UNITY to their communities. To-date, over 1,000 people from 47 states and 30 countries have downloaded the manual. In December of 2016, she created Be the Light, a project that helped people identify how they would share their light with the world. Over the course of four weeks, thousands of people lit candles and wrote intentions of actions they would take to spread light and love. The moving ABC story on the project recently won an Emmy Award. In June of 2017, Nancy launched Soar, a project that encourages people to let go of burdens that hold them back from stepping into their best selves. Participants identify a burden they are ready to release, write that burden on a rock and place the rock in a bin. Then they are invited to hang a brightly colored origami bird to symbolize their lightness and freedom from that burden. The project helps us understand that we are not alone in the human journey and reminds us of our individual and collective greatness. Nancy’s latest project, The Sanctuary, highlights people’s inner critic. Participants identify a negative thought about themselves that does not serve them. They discard that thought by writing it on a slip of paper that is ceremonially burned at the end of the project. They then craft a positive affirmation to take its place and write it on a colorful disc. Participants hang their positive affirmations in a field surrounded by thousands of other expansive thoughts, creating a sanctuary of limitless thinking. There should be no doubt that the future of learning and work will look vastly different than its present; the profound implications of accelerating technology adoption, an aging workforce, economic inequality and other factors will see to that. If associations are going to be influential contributors to shaping that future, however, their decision-makers will need to shift current thinking in fundamental ways, steer clear of counterproductive hype and focus on how their organizations can meaningfully help their current and future stakeholders thrive in this dynamic environment. For this episode of Association Chat, we explore the Race for Relevance with author and association consultant Mary Byers. It's been a few years since Race for Relevance and the follow-up to that book (co-authored with Harrison Coerver), Road to Relevance, were published. Are Race's "Five Radical Changes" still the right initiatives association execs need to employ to "energize" in governance, management, and strategy? What has Byers witnessed in her experiences with associations since then? Have associations become more nimble or are we still in danger of losing out to commercial enterprises that can supply the same benefits with speed? What should association leaders be paying attention to these days to better navigate their careers and the future of their organizations in the age of continuous disruption? We'll talk about all of this and more on this show. Please listen and tell me what you think via the socials or email.

Why aren’t associations more innovative when it comes to tech maturity? What’s holding us back? For this show, I jumped off the stage at AMS Fest in Washington, DC, and ran to my computer to talk with experts about tech innovation (or the lack thereof) in the association industry. [Sorry for any of the "crowd noise" behind me in the audio] This topic, studied by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Foundation, sheds light on information technology (IT) maturity levels at associations. In its survey, only 9% of associations were found to be truly innovative. So I wanted to know: What are the major causes holding associations back? How do more innovative associations overcome this challenge? Could the key lie in a stronger relationship between the CIO and CEO be the solution, or is there a deeper issue at hand? Some questions we discussed on this show: What did the ASAE study find about tech maturity at associations? Why do you think more associations aren't on the upper echelon of tech maturity? How valuable is the CEO/CIO (or equivalent) role in reaching the innovative end of tech maturity? When the CIO becomes the CEO or Executive Director -- how do you implement this change? What's your relationship with your CIO now? Panelists: Tim Hopkins, Director, Digital Center, International Association of Fire Chiefs Bill Bruce, MBA, CAE, Executive Director, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Ray van Hilst, Director of Client Results, Yoko Co About Association Chat Association Chat is weekly show that takes place live on Tuesdays at 2 pm EST at https://www.crowdcast.io/kikilitalien. What Will We Do for Work? Associations and Entrepreneurs Taking on The Skills Gap From https://talentedlearning.com/how-associations-bridge-skills-gap-digital-badges/: "According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in December 2016 there were 5.6 million open jobs in this country and only 98,000 were added in March 2017. That includes many notoriously hard-to-fill jobs. These persistently unfilled positions are attributed to an unfortunate and somewhat ironic phenomenon called the “skills gap.” Skills gap theorists say that formal education isn’t preparing enough candidates for specialized high-skill, high-growth jobs such as data analysis, user experience design and software programming. Traditional education isn’t producing enough qualified people to support today’s rapidly changing business needs. And this talent supply problem is only compounded by a decreasing 4.5% unemployment rate." According to a 2017 study, most people listen to the majority of a podcast and don’t skip the ads. The effect is essentially that of having an influencer whisper into your audience’s ear, “try this.” In this Association Chat, we explore the business of podcasts – the marketing and the opportunities presented – and the way some associations use advertising to meet their goals. Having “high potential” does not mean performing at maximum capability. While many believe they are doing all they can, a huge number of professionals are frustrated because they are coming up short of their personal expectations (and the expectations of others). Some have become paralyzed from taking risks by the fear of failure, while others are not sure what is holding them back. Speaker and facilitator Thom Singer has surveyed hundreds of people and the feedback is stunning that the majority of people are confident they can have greater success in their career. Companies in all sectors have employees who have reached a plateau or have become stuck in the “high middle”. There is a very real gap between potential and results, and Thom wants to show people the path to doing more at any stage of their career. Beyond excuses and finger pointing, this interactive presentation gets to the heart of how people can accomplish more and enjoy their work. For decades companies have been identifying and training their “high potential” employees, but these individuals are not always growing into the organization’s future leaders. There is a clear paradox around potential. The “future of work” is about more than telecommuting and stand up desks. Finding ways to transcend potential, goals, educations, action, hard work and serendipity is key to long term success. Those who are focused on goal setting, realistic assessments, teamwork, successful human engagement, cross-selling, and other skills will help their company reach the highest potential and be more fulfilled in their jobs. This gap is true not only for individuals but also for organizations. It is common to see a startup or other company that has a lot of potential, only to later witness it being shut down. While it is not possible to always achieve full potential (as once you get there, new opportunities will appear that creates a fresh path toward more potential), the constant struggle to bridge the gap will not happen by accident. Nobody should be comfortable relying on luck as the answer to their future. About Thom Singer Our guest has an eclectic background working in sales, marketing and business development roles for Fortune 500 Companies, Law Firms, and entrepreneurial ventures. He is a professional master of ceremonies, motivational keynote speaker, and the author of twelve books on the power of business development, networking, entrepreneurship, legal marketing, and presentation skills while also serving as the host of the popular “Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do” podcast. He regularly speaks at business and association conferences around the United States and beyond – and has presented to over 600 audiences during his career as a speaker. He lives in the amazing city of Austin, Texas where he and his wife are the parents of two highly spirited daughters. Please welcome our special guest, Thom Singer. You can connect with the association community throughout the week on Twitter using the hashtag #assnchat or through the Facebook Group. Find out more about Association Chat at http://associationchat.com/. (*"Cheekily" hashtagged from the beginning! #assnchat – yes, we know what it looks like and no, we aren't changing it.*) KiKi L'Italien serves as host for the chat. She invites and interviews guests weekly and produces creative collaborations with industry thought leaders throughout the year. How people can participate live and watch/listen later: - Association Chat provides participants with the ability to register and ask questions live on the day of the event, but it also streams on Facebook Live where people can watch and comment. - People can register on Crowdcast to participate live (the number of registered participants can fall in the range of 20-200+ on Crowdcast, it just depends on the speaker, topic, and marketing). - Each show usually has over 150 viewers on Facebook Live, with episodes later garnering 300-400+ views on the Facebook platform by itself. - Episodes are later uploaded to the Association Chat Podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, and edited video to YouTube. These are available Wednesday-Thursday of the original episode's same week of live recording - The replay is available at the same URL as the chat within minutes of the chat's end and the link will continue to take people to the replay once it's over.
