EOS & Leidos for Land 156, Type 26 for Norway, Hunter media coverage & other maritime news

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence. We start with a look at Land 156 with plenty of releases lately, including the announcement that the EOS Slinger cannon will be included and that Leidos has been selected as the system integrator. There's also been news of expanded UAS and Counter UAS systems as the government wants to show they're spending on Defence industry now, not just in the future. We also discuss the need for C-UAS layers covering EW, kinetic, high energy and so on, plus the cost of kill vs the cost of the drones themselves.Next up is the news that Norway is purchasing BAE's Type 26 Frigate which is the basis for our Hunter class and has also been selected by the Canadians. We note that this demonstrates the cooperation between the UK and Norway but also ponder whether BAE has the capacity to deliver the first vessel by 2030, although perhaps being kept the same as the UK's vessels will help. This naturally leads to a discussion about Hunter, mainstream media references to it being a "troubled" program, and how more engagement with media would help. There's also a quick chat about who gets to name the new ships. We wrap with the news that the keel of the sixth and final Offshore Patrol Vessel has been laid, along with the observation that there's a lot of maritime news lately and thoughts regarding the pending IIP update.Links:Leidos selected as Land 156 systems integratorwww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/leidos-selected-as-land-156-systems-integratorDefence expands UAS and CUAS capabilitieswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/defence-expands-uas-and-cuas-capabilitiesNorway selects Type 26 frigatewww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/norway-selects-type-26-frigateDefence lays keel for Offshore Patrol Vesselwww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/defence-lays-keel-for-offshore-patrol-vessel------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title (www.australiandefence.com.au).The views of the people appearing on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of Australian Defence Magazine, the Department of Defence or the guests' employer. If you wish to use any of this podcast's audio, please contact Australian Defence Magazine via their website www.australiandefence.com.au or email them via defmag@yaffa.com.au to get involved.ADM Podcasts are a blend of public interest journalism and sponsored content with a focus on the Defence community. MHI at the Hunter, closer ties with South Korea, & Kongsberg's exporting more NSM launchers

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the recent news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence. We open the episode with Kirra's comments on the Hunter Defence Conference that she attended, including reference to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries being present, which leads to a discussion on Mogami, MHI's capabilities, and observations that there's still a way to go before the contract is signed. We also consider Minister Controy's recent speech to the QLD Media Club which, among other topics, noted that Land 156 will be "both a benchmark and a blueprint for how we will deliver speed to capability in the future," and also that these systems could be deployed to assist civil society while referencing the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.The subsequent topics include Lockheed Martin Australia signing a contract with Avalon Airport to store GMLRs jigs and other components at the airport until their manufacturing site is ready to use them, plus Kongsberg have won another contract to export their NSM launchers and control consoles, all of which are made entirely within Australia with no foreign parts or companies involved. We then move on to discuss South Korea wanting to further engage with Australia for both training and for launching satellites, which could lead to Australia gaining access to more innovative technologies while also being a boon for ADM's next Australia-Korea Defence Congress. We wrap the episode with a reminder that ADM's 30 Under 30 Awards have opened for 2025 and Kirra's recent interview with previous award winner, Nasstassja Regan.Links:Hunter Defence Conference 2025www.hunterdefence.org.au/hdc2025ADM Eyes on Asia - August 13th - Japan reacts to MHI's Mogami winning Sea 3000www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/adm-eyes-on-asia-13-august-2025Minister Conroy's address to the QLD Media Clubwww.minister.defence.gov.au/speeches/2025-08-19/address-queensland-media-club-delivering-australias-defence-capabilityLockheed Martin Australia signs agreement with Avalon Airportwww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/lockheed-martin-australia-signs-agreement-with-avalon-airportKongsberg Defence Australia secures missile launcher dealwww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/kongsberg-defence-australia-secures-missile-launcher-dealSouth Korea seeks closer tieswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/south-korea-seeks-closer-tiesADM 30 Under 30 Awardsadm30u30awards.com.auWhy enter ADM's 30 Under 30 Awards?www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/why-enter-adm-30-under-30------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title...

First Land 156 announcements, TS25 launches a PrSM at Christmas Island, & Tethered UAS units

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the recent news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence. We kick off with the news that the government has announced a first block of contracts worth about $19 million under the Land 156 program. A number of companies are included, such as Droneshied which received about one third of the funds, and a Ukrainian drone detector system called Sugar V that is carried by soldiers to warn them of approaching drones. There's more to be announced though as there was no mention of a system integrator nor other companies that provide kinetic and energy weapons for destroying drones. Hopefully the procurements include access to on-going updates over the life of the gear as the Ukranian battlefield is demonstrating the speed of change and critical need to stay current. The discussion then moved on to the recent firing of a US Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) during Talisman Sabre from a US HiMARS vehicle that had been flown to Christmas Island by a Canadian CC-177 (aka C-17A) with target coordinates supplied by the ADF. We look at the likely range of the PrSM and the control over sea lanes that such a weapon can provide Australia, especially with the "Shoot and Scoot" capability thanks to the vehicle being deployed by an airlifter. This is aligned with the DSR's focus on long range missiles and the potential for sovereign build via GWEO.We also mention the Japanese Ground Self Defence Force firing two missiles at a NSW range which took separate sea skimming paths to simultaneously hit the same target from different directions.Sticking with Talisman Sabre, we wrap up by discussing Hoverfly supplying their Sentry Tethered UAS to the ADF through the Australian company Maser Defence for trials at major exercises during 2025. Although neither company could provide more information, it is very likely that it has been used at Talisman Sabre to perform the role of a communications relay. We also discuss how news of this was not circulated to Australian media and the efforts required to obtain information for the article.Links:Popular Ukrainian drone detector amongst Land 156 winnerswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/popular-ukrainian-drone-detector-amongst-land-156-winnersTalisman Sabre trials long-range fireswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/talisman-sabre-trials-long-range-firesHoverfly Tethered UAS in Trials During Major ADF Exerciseswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/hoverfly-tethered-uas-in-trials-during-major-adf-exercisesADM Women in Defence Networkadmwomenindefencenetwork.com.au------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title (www.australiandefence.com.au).The views of the people appearing on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of Australian Defence Magazine, the Department of Defence or the guests' employer. If you wish to use any of this podcast's audio, please contact Australian Defence Magazine via their website www.australiandefence.com.au or email them via

Reassessing combat helicopters, JP 9102 was cut due funding, and the importance of space

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the recent news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence. We start with the news that the first Black Hawks have moved to South East Queensland and that the Romeo fleet has reached 50,000 total flying hours. This leads into a discussion on the changing world of combat helicopters as Korea cancels its order for more Apaches and lessons from Ukraine regarding survivability. The conversation expands to look at the concept of platform obsolescence and refactoring how we use large, exquisite platforms in today's environment. We then move onto the cancellation of JP 9102 and subsequent return as SPA 9102 although reduced to cover only narrowband SATCOMs which indicates the original was cut due budget, not capability. This leads to reduced capabilities, loss of workers to other industries, foreign companies and governments starting to lose interest in bidding on ADF programs, and frustration from our government that Defence isn't delivering fast enough. We wrap with a quick chat about the importance of space for civilian and Defence usage, QuantX and the University of Adelaide using quantum clocks for precision timing, and conducting operations in GPS denied environments.Links:Black Hawk fleet returns to South East Queenslandwww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/black-hawk-fleet-returns-to-south-east-queenslandMH-60R Seahawk fleet reaches 50k flying hourswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/mh-60r-seahawk-fleet-reaches-50k-flying-hoursDefence re-visits JP9102www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/defence-re-visits-jp9102Defence backflip on JP9102 reveals funding pressurewww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/defence-backflip-on-jp-9102-reveals-funding-pressureQuantX and University of Adelaide to advance quantum clock technologieswww.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/quantx-and-university-of-adelaide-to-advance-quantum-clock-technologies------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title (www.australiandefence.com.au).The views of the people appearing on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of Australian Defence Magazine, the Department of Defence or the guests' employer. While this will have caused havoc for Iran's centrifuges we note that wars are very easy to start but very hard to stop and discuss bombing from the air working best in support of a ground campaign. This leads to a discussion on the USAF B-2s achieving the remote, deep strike mission that the AUKUS submarines are supposed to achieve. Would a squadron of B-21s be cheaper and more effective or are there other ways to meet our goals that are more inline with Australia's economic capabilities? After all, Ukraine is showing that it's possible to defend your shores from a more powerful fleet with inexpensive drones so perhaps Australia should reassess what works best for our budget? That said, a recent report in War On The Rocks indicates that FPV drones are only succeeding 20-30% of the time and that well placed mortar rounds are more cost effective. Once again, there is no silver bullet and FPV drones become yet another weapon in the armory of capabilities that need to be used together to achieve results. We wrap with a quick discussion about CIVMEC acquiring Luerssen Australia, the upcoming South Australian Defence Summit in July and the Western Australia Defence Forum in August, both of which ADM will be attending. The discussion gives us an insight into how base construction and management has developed in the last decade, with changes in perspectives in accommodation and amenities for staff, and the further considerations made for their work and personal lives. We also review newly applied technologies and their benefits to management, the impact that the removal and reclassification of workstations and locations had on JLL, and the opportunities granted by the increased focus on bases in the NT and far north QLD. We wrap up by evaluating how recent increased tensions in the IndoPac region, changes in the US position, and instability in sectors of the world economy are impacting the Defence estate.  LINKS:JLL's Defence Workhttps://www.jll.com/en-au/industries/defence/?utm_source=&utm_medium=paidsocial&utm_campaign=ap-au-ind-gov-defence2025-0625&utm_content=podcast------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title (www.australiandefence.com.au).The views of the people appearing on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of Australian Defence Magazine, the Department of Defence or the guests' employer. TKMS & SEA3000, USA's AUKUS review, and deep-striking drones

In this News Review episode, Grant McHerron, Ewen Levick and Kirra Davey review and discuss some of the recent news of interest that's occurred recently in the world of Defence. We start with Grant's recent trip to Germany as a guest of TKMS where he and three journalists from Australia toured ship yards, a steel fabrication plant and a German Navy frigate. Much was learned despite the rather extreme NDAs that the ADF is placing on companies bidding for SEA 3000. We then discuss the Mogami vs MEKO options, TKMS' history of off-shore building and partnerships, the Japanese relationship vs sovereign capability, and are some relationships more one-way than others. This leads to the need for Australian defence industry to export to other countries as the ADF doesn't buy enough quantity to justify the investment in sovereign capability, citing examples from Hanwha and Thales who are doing just that.We then look at the AUKUS review being conducted by the Trump administration, assessing Defence spend as a percentage of GDP vs actual capability being purchased, the Defence budget being dominated by maritime platforms, Ukraine's ability to deep-strike into enemy territory via drones as opposed to very expensive and long lead time exquisite platforms. The discussion also notes our inability to defend against such a drone strike on our cities and bases, and acknowledgement of the lack of political appetite for more defence spending. We wrap with Kirra's discussion of touring the USS Blue Ridge and speaking with Brig. Gen. Mastalir from the US Space Force. We also look at ADM's Women in Defence Network and the events held recently and coming up.Links:ATLA: ‘Mogami-class frigate sale will deepen Australia-Japan defence ties’https://www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/atla-mogami-class-frigate-sale-will-deepen-australia-japan-defence-tiesTrump launches AUKUS reviewhttps://www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/trump-launches-aukus-reviewASPI says defence spending is not enoughhttps://www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/aspi-says-defence-spending-is-not-enoughADM Women in Defence Networkadmwomenindefencenetwork.com.au------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title (www.australiandefence.com.au).The views of the people appearing on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of Australian Defence Magazine, the Department of Defence or the guests' employer. Delivering health services across Australia for the ADF

In this episode, Grant McHerron talks with Maureen Taylor, the National Manager for Corporate Health at Healthcare Australia (HCA) and Dr Michael Bonning, Defence Medical Advisor at HCA, The topic is regarding Defence’s transition to a patient-centric care approach rather than one that is cost control based, which is part of Defence’s improvements for the health and wellbeing of ADF members. We begin our discussion by getting a background of Maureen and Michael’s extensive careers, and the role that HCA operates as Australia’s largest health services delivery company. We get an insight into the impact that the Royal Commission's report had and the need to reshape mental health support, to act proactively, remove stigma, and improve accessibility. The discussion reviews the need to shift towards a patient-centric care with considerations of the difficulties of doing this in the ADF context, and the differences that patients face in their lives compared to a typical private workforce. We also explore the HCA’s expansive national network, and the need to support rural and regional areas, with the ability to scale to meet demands in disaster scenarios. We wrap up by discussing how HCA manages international and maritime deployments, and how it integrates with ADF and their clients.LINKS:Healthcare Australiahealthcareaustralia.com.au------------------The ADM Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of Australian Defence Magazine, a Yaffa Media title (www.australiandefence.com.au).The views of the people appearing on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of Australian Defence Magazine, the Department of Defence or the guests' employer.
