A Tribute to Ella Jenkins August 6, 1924 – November 9, 2024 ❣️
As a children's librarian, I was massively influenced by Ms Jenkins.
Percussion provided by rhythm speaker Ms Jan Jeffries and shekere mama Ms Marcy Francis live in Baby Wordplay theater, Philadelphia 2017
Ella Jenkins laid the groundwork for the field of children’s music and inspired generations of children’s music leaders who have followed in her footsteps.
Ms Jenkins was born to an African-American working class family in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 6, 1924. Her family moved to Chicago and Ms Jenkins grew up on the city’s South Side, moving frequently to get to a more “uptown” neighborhood.
Her family and neighborhood life provided the basis of her musical education—each move allowed Jenkins to experience the rhythms, rhymes, and games which could be different even if only a few blocks apart.
She was fascinated by her Uncle Flood, who played the harmonica, and alongside him she would tease out rhythms on oatmeal boxes, wastebaskets, and cooking pots.
“I was naturally rhythmic,” she stated, “and would try to copy my uncle’s sounds by whistling. But my mother did not like it, saying good women and young girls did not whistle.”
Yet it was her mother who took her to the music store to purchase her first harmonica. Her brother taught her songs he learned at summer camps.
Jenkins’ work draws on African-American call and response singing—she cites Cab Calloway as an early influence.
Her re-popularization of game songs from her youth like “Miss Mary Mack” and “One Potato, Two Potato” couples basic chants and movement rescued from the folklore of American play, game songs, and ring chants.
Her original songs, like “Stop and Go” and “Play Your Instruments,” are direct results of her absorption of those traditions.
Jenkins is one of only 12 persons to be recognized as a Legacy Honoree of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage.

I set up a "morning invitation" for my 16 month grandson - a scene with a Pig and a doll looking at books. It drew him in like a bee to honey. Weellll, I am still a darned good children's librarian ... :)After breakfast he crawled over, of his own accord, and proceeded to choose one of the books - he knew 2 of them very well. He began reading, turning the pages and enjoying his very own storytime!
Imagine all was going on in that brain during this!
The children listen to the podcast and read multiple times in the day. Let's get them cooing, babbling, singing and talking!
Warmly,
Miss Pam

🌺 On an island, named Jamaica, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, there lived a little girl.
One day, she set off over land and water to find an adventure. When her travels brought her to the edge of the United States, she sat down and thought, "maybe this is where I should stay."
Just then a strong breeze came by and blew her further north and eventually, she landed in New Jersey. Since she loved children and stories, she became a librarian.
She has fun bringing together stories and songs, reading and rhyme, all for family literacy FUN.
This little girl is me! Now a grandma to two littles under 3 years old, I use and NEED my own podcast when I'm with them - ha! READ FULL BIO on Miss Pam

Thank you! ~Miss Pam xoxo
When you bring baby home, there are a million things to consider and navigate as everyone gets to know each other in this first year. Things are changing daily — heck, hourly!
The first year is also a tender time even as it is gruelling. You want to do the best for your baby, keep him dry and fed, soothe her upsets, provide a little fresh air, make sure he’s not too cold, protect her from the sun, etc.
And you are, hopefully, falling in love.
While taking care of her physical needs, you also know it’s important to talk, sing, read and play with your baby. You know that you are your child’s first teacher, the single most important key to their brain and language development.
It’s all a bit, well, overwhelming. Eeeek!
Enter SMALL TALK BABY PODCAST. I believe every family with a baby under 3 years needs my podcast, wherever they are in the world. Why? That’s easy…
SMALL TALK BABY PODCAST (STBP)
FUN. +Play is the work of children, from birth.
It is through play that babies learn about the world—themselves and others. Every episode of STBP is a screen-free invitation to play with words and language. The podcast helps families build a routine around language development.
RICH AND EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE. +Food for a baby’s brain.
It is designed to foster language development in a joyful way: it grows your baby’s vocabulary and comprehension, stimulates your baby’s imagination and curiosity through developmentally appropriate books, and teaches your baby about abstract concepts like emotions, counting—all without the distraction of a screen.
BABIES’ BRAINS AND ADULT MODELLING. +Repetition is the key to learning.
I used my 35 plus years of early literacy expertise to create this screen-free tool for a young child and the parents or caregivers. Every episode is theater to a baby’s ears, capturing their attention with the sounds within words, the music, intonation, rhyme and rhythm, volume and texture and with movement, both fine and gross. By listening regularly with your little one, you are building a shared wordplay/storytime repertoire of over 100 songs, rhymes, poems and fingerplays that you learn by repetition, alongside your little one.
SCREEN-FREE
Once your child knows what to expect, they will become intent on listening and participating in the fun you always have with them during this time. Turn it on during fussy moments in the car or high chair, during tummy time or the witching hour!
I promise you that sharing 1 or 2 episodes every day over a 12 month period, will help your baby become a youngster with a wide vocabulary, comprehension and experiences through the songs and books I share.
Every episode reinforces the rhythm and structure and diversity of language and gets you using new words in fun ways.
