Podcast - Cam Bramer

2025-10-1054:34

It was great to catch up for a podcast with U.S. Elite Pro rider Cam Bramer while he was out here in San Diego, getting ready for this weekend’s Holeshot Challenge at the State Finals at San Diego BMX.Cam shared some insight into his BMX journey, starting out at the legendary South Park track in Pennsylvania — a place many of us have raced over the decades — and progressing through the amateur ranks all the way to Pro. This year, he reached a huge milestone, winning his first Elite National main event in Minnesota, in front of his family. We talked about what it’s like being a current Pro in today’s tough climate. Despite the challenges, Cam has built a solid group of sponsors who support his racing journey. He also spoke about his recent move to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to further his career, his goal of racing more World Cups, and his ultimate dream — qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and representing Team USA on home soil.Cam gave some great perspective on the depth of the current Elite class, his mindset, and his drive to win. I really enjoyed this one — Cam’s a great guy, and it’s riders like him you can’t help but cheer for.
In this episode, we talk about the National BMX Hall of Fame, which Dr. J attended last weekend in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We cover the event itself, who was there, and some of the 2025 inductees. We also dive into the Pump Track World Championships, where Eddy Clerte was crowned UCI Pump Track World Champion. We share our thoughts on the value of a rainbow jersey for Pump Track and what it means as a title. From there, we move on to the final UCI World Cup of the season in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, with Arthur Pilard and Saya Sakakibara taking the overall titles. Plus, we touch on the upcoming Enhanced Games slated for 2026—and more.

Eddy King is in town (San Diego), and he and his mom dropped by for a catch-up. We hit the record button on the podcast as well.We talk about San Diego’s deep history in BMX, some of the early tracks from the 70s, and the current San Diego BMX Track (run by Tyler Brown and his wife), which is one of the longest-running tracks in the U.S.—possibly the longest in history. We also talk about Hall of Fames popping up around the country and ask: why don’t they have one in San Diego or So-Cal?Other topics include Dirty Fest, the Oakley 50th Anniversary Party that Ebby attended, the NBA Awards, and the upcoming 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles—how it could be the perfect time for BMX history to shine with a side event, museum, or exhibition running alongside the Olympic BMX events. We also touch on Harry Leary, some Kellogg’s talk, and more. Check it out!

Si talks about skating alongside BMX and getting into the MTB scene when it was blowing up in the early ’90s in the UK.We talk about Si putting on the National Downhill Series for British Cycling, bringing the Malverns back with backing from Clive Gosling and GT, and the ups and downs of running a monstrous event – plus how things are looking for this year’s event, which takes place in a few weeks’ time.We also talk about the Bob Haro / Gumball 3000 – IKONIX Bike Launch London event he was part of last week. Anthony Howie Waye is someone I’ve always wanted to do a podcast with, and finally—during a two-week trip to California this month with his daughter—Howie came over to hang out for the day, and we recorded a pod. We covered a lot in this one, from the start of Howie’s BMX career to riding for GT in the U.S., and then becoming the biggest name and a dominant Pro in Australia during the late ’80s and into the ’90s. We talk about him having to miss the 1989 home Worlds in Australia, meeting Mike Miranda and Toby Henderson, the competition down under, and the riders he battled with—guys like Paul Adams and Lee Egan—as well as the riders he respected and followed as a fan post-career, including Warwick Stevenson, Khalen Young, Sam Willoughby, Josh Jolly, Izaac Kennedy, and more. Catching up with Grotbags Paul Roberts in Huntington Beach for a podcast. We talk about Paul's recovery from his leg injury after crashing in the dark while riding back from @epicbmx—mis-timing a curb and ending up on crutches, unable to ride for months. We then dive into some of the topics we’ve seen on social media lately—Is BMX dead? With the industry in a downturn, we talk about how things were in the late ’80s and early ’90s when we were both part of the downtime after the ’80s BMX bubble burst. The riders and brands that stuck around during that period ended up in a good place when the industry bounced back in the mid-’90s. We also dip into a bit of politics for the first time, with so much in the news since the election. Other topics include a potential Neal Wood podcast, Paul’s days as Vans UK Team Manager, getting Martin and Stephen Murray on Haro UK, and a few old stories from racing in the UK in the ’80s and ’90s—including my dad not wanting me to get into a car with Paul to go to a race. And more.
It’s been a few months since my last podcast, and it’s time to get back on it. We’re kicking things off with a chat with Joey Albright, who were with us on a podcast this time last year. We discuss TJ’s solid start to the season and what it takes to be a Supercross rider on the circuit. Joey gives us an update since his injury, getting back on the bike and joining me out at San Diego BMX for some riding while he's been in town. We also touch base on the Olympics, the Grands, and more. Check it out!
