BOARD TO DEATH skates into Scotland’s skateboarding scene with host Jonty.

Whether you're travelling to Scotland for a vacation or you live here, get to know some of Scotland’s sickest and most talented skaters with their stories of what drew them to skateboarding, what keeps them at it, as well as some cultural, social and important conversations. Don’t worry there’s skate trip shenanigan stories that’ll have you laughing over and over (it’s not all that serious - right?)

The Factory was quite literally - a factory. An unused building were in the 80s a group of skateboarders from the city of Dundee made their home away or home or in some cases by the sounds of it, just their home. The Factory would go on to become one of the most iconic locations in Scottish skateboarding and went through four different versions all the way through to today. We're joined by OGs Rick Curran and Ray Dower who are telling some of their favourite stories from the era thirty years later. For more on The Factory check out the links below. A real slice of Scottish skateboarding history this week with Sam and Toby Paterson talking us through the first part of their skate story from 1984 through to 1993. The duo are talking everything in this one and we really mean everything! From Kelvingrove skatepark, their first skateboards, working at Clan skates, getting mugged, hit by cars and becoming teenagers in the scene during this time. It's a wild ride. We'll be chatting with Sam and Toby again later this summer for a 1993 - 2024 volume so please don't worry - a part two is on the way! Yes, we are back with a brand new season of skate knowledge and nonsense. There was no better way to kick the season off by sitting down with the founder and owner of Scotland’s oldest skate shop, Jamie Blair who has ran Clan Skates in Glasgow’s west end since 1987. Joining Jamie is long time shredder and artist Ray Dower. In this episode, we’re looking at some big moments from Scotland’s rich skate history from Kelvingrove Skatepark being built in 1977, all the way through to the mid 1990s. Scotland’s big hitter John Rattray also drops in with a special message for his mentor and long time friend Jamie. Let us know if there’s anything you want to hear about on the new season and your thoughts on the episode down below. We’ll back with a Vol. 2 very soon. Opening Song: Grace by Bran Van 3000. 46 skaters have opened up about their experiences on and off the board on a podcast that I still can’t believe made it through - 21 episodes, 839 minutes, 12 months and was streamed in 39 countries. So, in turn, I thought that I would open up a bit to all of you. This episode is a little intense, but I’m happy I’ve said what I said - it’s all part of the process. To all of you who have steamed, told a friend to stream, liked a post, travelled to the studio and made the project what it is - there isn’t a way I can thank you enough physically or mentally. So after exactly one year since we recorded the first episode, it’s over to the last episode to tie things up … for now. This week we’re discussing our mental health and everything that comes with it. A recent study has found that skateboarding improves mental health, fosters community, and promotes diversity and resilience. It’s not just important to talk about - it’s mandatory, but always in your own time. Take a look at John Rattray’s ‘Why So Sad?’ Project, which is available in his bio @ratt_ray on Instagram. Sobriety | Episode 18

Sobriety | Episode 18

2023-01-1338:33

Sobriety is spoken about more and more these days, but, from my experience, even more within the skate community. We want to create a place for people to openly or anonymously tell their stories about addiction, sobriety and the road ahead. It’s a cliche, but to read someone’s story has a significant chance of affecting someone’s life - you don’t have to be famous to do this. January can be a challenging time for many people battling, discovering or identifying their own issues and or relationships with substance abuse. Each year the skateboarding community becomes more and more open (in comparison to a lot of other sports) about addiction and sobriety. Ross sits with Mary Jane and Jamie this week to discuss their journeys and sobriety. As complicated, challenging and rewarding as it is.  Follow us on Instagram at @imboardtodeath and keep the conversation going. https://www.instagram.com/imboardtodeath/ Board To Death - A Scottish Skateboarding Podcast - Episode 18: Sobriety  Recorded at TEN10 Podcasts' studio in Glasgow in 2022. @ten10podcasts https://www.ten10podcasts.com

Kingston | Episode 17

2023-01-0639:53

Kingston DIY is one of Scotland’s most popular DIY parks. Based under a motorway, the project has grown in popularity each month, with the pandemic spearheading it on social media. Three of the people behind it join us today for an in-depth look at how Kingston came to be. Roan, Tam and Stu talk about the project's beginnings and the project's future, and we’re asking all of your questions about the DIY and getting the full story of how it came to be the place we all recognise and love to skate today. Remember that DIY projects are not funded and rely on grants (where possible - and that’s rare these days) or donations. If you can help out in any way, no matter how big or small, then head of to the Kingston Instagram and do what you can. Here’s to a great year. The question is - can we outdo last year?  Follow us on Instagram at @imboardtodeath and keep the conversation going.  https://www.instagram.com/imboardtodeath/  Board To Death - A Scottish Skateboarding Podcast - Episode 17: Kingston  Recorded at TEN10 Podcasts' studio in Glasgow in 2022. @ten10podcasts  https://www.ten10podcasts.com

Nathan returns this week with Beth and Steffan for a chat on all things Fife. This week we’re discussing the plans for winter and the always popular Woody’s skatepark at the heart of the skate community in Fife. News of the new indoor skate park approval in Dundee is hot this week, as well as supporting the Kilmarnock skatepark project (the link to sign the petition is in our bio). If you’re in Fife, message Woody’s Skatepark and get involved in the local open group chat! We’ve also launched our Discord channel this week, so get involved and don’t be Board To Death as the days get shorter and the nights get colder this winter. Arguably Scotland's most iconic DIY, The Forgotten Road, has been visited by people from all over the country and beyond. Located in Inverness, Aly Campbell explains a little more about it. Aly is here (all the way from Inverness) alongside Dean and Zakk. In this episode, we're talking about the lockdown, how this winter should be different for indoor skating, and most importantly, our guests' stories and The Forgotten Road. We know money is tight for everyone just now; however, if you can donate anything to The Forgotten Road project on PayPal (link in our bio) then please do. The DIY itself survives on our support.
