In 1910, Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries clashed in Reno, Nevada to contest the world heavyweight crown in what was then billed as “The Fight of the Century.” At stake was far more than a mere boxing championship, as the black Johnson, having taken the belt from Canadian Tommy Burns in 1908, was thought by the white public in America to be wholly unfit to hold the title. Jeffries, an undefeated former champion and the most legitimate “Great White Hope,” had been repeatedly summoned to return to boxing so he could defeat the brash Johnson and reinstate the white man’s rightful place atop the athletic hierarchy. His quest would prove fruitless, but the legendary Johnson vs Jeffries match, with its buildup and aftermath, was a genuine sensation and social phenomenon, an event that galvanized the public while reflecting the hateful ideologies of the age Subscribe Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/legendary-nights/id1493845050 Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/2QyYCjXipHAfAPTAUUKQDO We are also available on Player FM, Spreaker, and all other major podcasting apps Follow us at: https://twitter.com/legendnightpod https://www.facebook.com/btrboxingpodcast Become A Patron patreon.com/btrboxingpodcastnetwork Learn more about your ad choices. It was more than just a fight, it was the biggest match in San Antonio's boxing-rich history and over the years has become a tale of both myth and legend. On September 10th, 1993 the world of sports stopped to tune in to the most anticipated bout in years as Pernell Whitaker and Julio César Chávez faced off in a contest that would be marred by controversial judging that left sportswriters and fans bewildered and robbed the boxing world of a career-defining moment. It was June 18, 1941, on a night in which the earth stood still, figuratively speaking. It was one of the most exciting and career-defining moments in this game of thrones that we call boxing. On this day, we saw a bold rise as light heavyweight champion, the “Pittsburgh Kid” Billy Conn, 64-11-1, 15 KO’s, took on the heavyweight champion of the world, “The Brown Bomber” Joe Louis, 66-3, 52 KO’s. This fight, pitted a light heavyweight rising in weight to take on the undisputed heavyweight champion near his absolute peak. It's 1985 in the United Kingdom and after a summer of inner-city riots across Britain, Errol Christie and Mark Kaylor's boxing careers would be defined in one night. It took just three words from Mark Kaylor to take this rivalry to heights not seen in the UK before or since, as the racial tensions in society boiled over into the build-up of what was to be an explosive fight that was a grim reflection of society at the time. Sugar Ray Robinson, regarded by many as pound-for-pound the greatest boxer of all time, rarely found himself the underdog, but that all changed when he stepped into the ring with “The Onion Farmer,” the ever-tough and tenacious Carmen Basilio. Sean & Johnston present the stories around both of the Robinson vs Basilio clashes that were magnificently savage wars, contested at the highest level between now legendary champions, and that also deserve their status as two of the greatest fifteen-round struggles in middleweight history. There was a moment some 25 years ago when Lou Duva once again believed he had the best heavyweight in the world – but only, he said, if fights were fought in the street and not the ring. The heavyweight in question was Andrew Golota, a talented but troubled Pole who, in 1996, fought Riddick Bowe twice and conspired to lose both fights when in a winning position. Duva, Golota’s head coach at the time, watched helplessly from the corner on both occasions and struggled to understand how Golota had fouled his way to consecutive disqualification defeats. All he knew for certain was this: no two fights better exemplified how boxing is as much a battle of the mind as the body. Sean & Johnston guide you through the polarising boxing careers' detailing moments that would act as a prelude to what the two fights in 1996 would provide in The Tale of Riddick Bowe vs Andrew Golota. Lennox Lewis vs. Mike Tyson, billed as Lewis–Tyson: Is On, was a heavyweight professional boxing match that took place on June 8, 2002, at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis, Tennessee. Those eight days in the Catskills would forge the path that both Lewis & Tyson would eventually collide on, but not before each facing adversity along the way In this episode, we pick up the careers of Lewis & Tyson in 1995 and present the events that would ultimately lead to their 2002 showdown. In this episode, we dig deep with a man who went from being the heavyweight champion of the world, and star of a Rocky movie... to drinking, driving, drugging, beating, biting, toting guns, and so much more. Then there are the various opinions, facts, and lies on the HIV diagnosis that has been contested he never had! This story documents the rise and fall of Tommy "The Duke" Morrison. In this episode, we check out the life of the man who inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the Rocky character. He came from the streets and loved a bar-room brawl even more than a fight in the ring. In boxing, he was known mainly for two things, being the bloodiest fighter, maybe in boxing history, and getting a shot, out of nowhere, to fight Muhammad Ali, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Life after boxing consisted of life selling liquor, legally, and for a little while, selling cocaine, illegally. A federal investigation brought an end to that, but years later, he's in trouble once more, this time for being involved with memorabilia forgery! Learn more about your ad choices. An Irish immigrant, a collection agent for crime bosses, a professional boxer, and a prolific gambler, John Morrissey was—if nothing else—an unlikely candidate to become one of the most important figures in the history of American history. John Morrissey, was a two-fisted Irish immigrant who, more than any other man of the age, represented the nefarious links between organized crime, politics, sports, and high finance in America. The loose inspiration behind Leonardo DiCaprio's character in The Gangs of New York, he was an undefeated bare-knuckle prize-fighter, widely recognized as the national champion, as well as a feared gangster and mob boss before either term was coined, rumored leader of the Dead Rabbits street gang, and eventually U.S. Congressman and member of the New York state senate. In this episode, we take a look at a man who came onto the boxing scene, literally out of nowhere. To the world, he seemingly had no past, but he certainly had a future in fighting. He made it all the way to the national stage before questions arose. Questions like "who is this guy?" because facing a well-known fighter of the time caused his big secret to be exposed, and his world to crumble. Just when you maybe start to feel bad for him, you find out something even more sinister took place which leads to the question of who is Roberto Medina? Learn more about your ad choices. We tell the odd story of the Haitian-born adopted Canadian fighter who came to another country, as a small child, grew up in foster care, and ran the streets, putting himself in all kinds of dangerous situations. He ended up becoming a world champion boxer, with an exciting, crowd-pleasing style, and a growing fan base. Sounds like the dream, right? Well, there was a very murky past, that people weren't aware of. Like doing time in prison, for absolutely horrific, and downright disgusting crimes! Once it all comes out, no one looks at him the same, despite his winning ways. Finally, his career is ended by a series of punches that puts him in a coma, and makes his survival anything but assured, but the question remains is it a story of retribution for past transgressions or redemption for turning his life around after being on death's door? Rick "Elvis" Parker was a street hustler who became an entrepreneur and flamboyant boxing promoter from Orlando, Florida. He had aspirations of becoming the next Don King. He promoted such fighters as George Foreman, "Smokin" Bert Cooper, and former NFL star, Mark Gastineau. However, things took a sinister turn when of his boxers Tim "Doc" Anderson crashed his hopes of "The Windfall Effect", Parker swore revenge that would ultimately have deadly consequences. We explore one of the most charismatic characters that we've ever heard of, combined with a private life that can easily be described as "chaos". He has more wrap sheets than you can count, but one thing remains true, he's a self-destructive, but very nice person. An Olympic gold medallist, he became heavyweight champion of the world, in only his eighth fight, and from that moment on things went downhill at an almighty pace. He had his teeth stolen, multiple times. But there is one part of him that is incredibly impressive, and it's not his right hand! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
In November 1982, South Korean boxer Duk-Koo Kim entered the boxing ring to fight American boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini in a highly awaited bout that received a lot of media attention. The two were competing for the WBA lightweight title. In the 14th round of what was a ferocious contest, Mancini headed straight for Kim, where he blasted him with a sharp left hook. Mancini missed with a left and a right, then connected with a straight right to the centre of Kim’s face. The South Korean tumbled backward, falling flat on his back, and sliding underneath the ropes. Kim stayed down for a couple of seconds before rolling over and getting to his knees. His vision was impaired, and he struggled to grasp the lower rope. Once Kim clutched it, he stood halfway up and began to stumble backward. Referee Richard Green recognized the injured fighter’s instability, waved both hands over his head, and declared the fight over.  Sean & Johnston present the story of two fighters from contrasting backgrounds who created a moment that would destroy lives and change boxing forever! Sean & Johnston present the story of these two legendary fighters and how their paths would eventually lead to each other with many notable moments inside and out of the squared circle.
