In 1910, Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries clashed in Reno, Nevada to contest the world heavyweight crown in what was then billed as “The Fight of the Century.” At stake was far more than a mere boxing championship, as the black Johnson, having taken the belt from Canadian Tommy Burns in 1908, was thought by the white public in America to be wholly unfit to hold the title. Jeffries, an undefeated former champion and the most legitimate “Great White Hope,” had been repeatedly summoned to return to boxing so he could defeat the brash Johnson and reinstate the white man’s rightful place atop the athletic hierarchy. His quest would prove fruitless, but the legendary Johnson vs Jeffries match, with its buildup and aftermath, was a genuine sensation and social phenomenon, an event that galvanized the public while reflecting the hateful ideologies of the age

It was June 18, 1941, on a night in which the earth stood still, figuratively speaking. It was one of the most exciting and career-defining moments in this game of thrones that we call boxing. On this day, we saw a bold rise as light heavyweight champion, the “Pittsburgh Kid” Billy Conn, 64-11-1, 15 KO’s, took on the heavyweight champion of the world, “The Brown Bomber” Joe Louis, 66-3, 52 KO’s. This fight, pitted a light heavyweight rising in weight to take on the undisputed heavyweight champion near his absolute peak.

It's 1985 in the United Kingdom and after a summer of inner-city riots across Britain, Errol Christie and Mark Kaylor's boxing careers would be defined in one night. It took just three words from Mark Kaylor to take this rivalry to heights not seen in the UK before or since, as the racial tensions in society boiled over into the build-up of what was to be an explosive fight that was a grim reflection of society at the time.

There was a moment some 25 years ago when Lou Duva once again believed he had the best heavyweight in the world – but only, he said, if fights were fought in the street and not the ring. The heavyweight in question was Andrew Golota, a talented but troubled Pole who, in 1996, fought Riddick Bowe twice and conspired to lose both fights when in a winning position. Duva, Golota’s head coach at the time, watched helplessly from the corner on both occasions and struggled to understand how Golota had fouled his way to consecutive disqualification defeats. All he knew for certain was this: no two fights better exemplified how boxing is as much a battle of the mind as the body.

Lennox Lewis vs. Mike Tyson, billed as Lewis–Tyson: Is On, was a heavyweight professional boxing match that took place on June 8, 2002, at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis, Tennessee.
Lennox Lewis was a promising 18-year-old amateur and Mike Tyson a precocious 17-year-old, when Lewis and his amateur coach Arnie Boehm were invited by Cus D’Amato to join he, Tyson, and Kevin Rooney for eight days of training and sparring in the Catskills in up state New York. Those eight days in the Catskills would forge the path that both Lewis & Tyson would eventually collide on, but not before each facing adversity along the way

Rick "Elvis" Parker was a street hustler who became an entrepreneur and flamboyant boxing promoter from Orlando, Florida. He had aspirations of becoming the next Don King. In November 1982, South Korean boxer Duk-Koo Kim entered the boxing ring to fight American boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini in a highly awaited bout that received a lot of media attention. The two were competing for the WBA lightweight title.
In the 14th round of what was a ferocious contest, Mancini headed straight for Kim, where he blasted him with a sharp left hook. Mancini missed with a left and a right, then connected with a straight right to the centre of Kim’s face. The South Korean tumbled backward, falling flat on his back, and sliding underneath the ropes.
Kim stayed down for a couple of seconds before rolling over and getting to his knees. His vision was impaired, and he struggled to grasp the lower rope. Once Kim clutched it, he stood halfway up and began to stumble backward. Referee Richard Green recognized the injured fighter’s instability, waved both hands over his head, and declared the fight over.

Joseph Louis Barrow (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1934 to 1951. Nicknamed "the Brown Bomber", Louis is widely regarded as one of history's greatest and most influential boxers. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses, a record for all weight classes. Louis had the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history.
