Penn State defense shows off its dominant streak Many openly wondered how the team would replace third-overall pick Abdul Carter on the defensive line. Not to be out-shined, senior Dani Dennis-Sutton domianted against the Nevada offensive line. Dennis-Sutton collected one sack, two tackles for loss a pass breakup, a QB hit and forced two fumbles in a dominant performance to start the year. Nevada was able to keep the game somewhat respectable through the first half, largely thanks to the legs of quarterback Chubba Purdy. Purdy rushed 14 times for 55 yards including an explosive run that resulted in a redzone trip and a field goal early. However, Penn State's stingy coverage unit gave up little through the air with Purdy staying under 100 yards passing until late in the fourth quarter when the second string entered the game. Offense plays efficient game Senior quarterback Drew Allar wasn't flashy, but he was ultra-efficient in his day under center. He finished 22-26 for 217 yards and a touchdown in the win. His 85% completion percentage was one of his career highs, and Allar looked calm under pressure, delivering a touchdown strike to Kyron Hudson while rolling to his right in the second quarter. Of course, the biggest development was the team's passing game going through its wide receivers in the team's win. Trebor Pena caught seven passes on eight targets for 74 yards, and former USC Trojan Kyron Hudson caught six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown on the day. Late in the game, backup quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer shone on his fourth-quarter drive, going 4-6 with a beautiful strike to Khalil DInkins for 24 yards. He ended the drive with a six-yard touchdown scramble. BWI Postgame coverage Follow BWI's postgame coverage after the game. While there are still loose ends in the Class of 2026, the team will focus heavily on 2027 to get a jump on the recruiting process for the next cycle. While we're in the middle of a two-month dead period, Ryan Snyder has been working ahead to secure the names of players who plan to attend Penn State in the fall. He's also been interviewing players to get to know their stories ahead of the mad dash to January. Join the BWI Live Show as we discuss those topics, plus the major news that Penn State missed out on its quarterback target of choice for 2027, Peter Bourque, this week. Penn State loses out in 2027 QB Dominoes Penn State Class of 2027 target Peter Bourque was a regular in Happy Valley over the last two summers. The New England native attended several camps and was clearly the team's top quarterback target for the upcoming cycle. It was a recruitment that most Penn State fans should have felt good about. Then, suddenly, Bourque committed to Michigan earlier this week. Or, at least that's how it felt. We'll discuss the situation with Snyder and what his read of Penn State's most recent QB recruiting loss means for the program. Where does the team turn next? We'll dive into the dominoes that are now falling for the top remaining targets for the next cycle. Also, after trying to recruit two quarterbacks for the last two cycles, can the team rebound and find two passers to join the ranks of the Nittany Lions signal callers? Penn State recruit and commit stories Snyder has spent the last several weeks getting in touch with recruits to get to know them and their plans for the fall better. We'll outline several of his conversations, including how the unlikely pair of PA safety Matt Seig and California QB Troy Huhn bonded in the Class of 2026. Finally, we'll preview the upcoming fall football season for the rising seniors and discuss which players Snyder thinks have the best chance of rising up the recruiting rankings to make Penn State's profile for this cycle look better than it currently is. Penn State cements its preseason hype with AP Top 25 ranking Penn State gained buzz all offseason with a slew of players returning for the upcoming season. After those announcements in January and February, the team went further by adding three wide receivers in the winter and spring transfer portal. Next, we'll dive right into camp observations from Thursday evening. The team hosted the media for an extended view of practice, including run game drills with the offensive and defensive line. We'll share feedback from practice to give fans a sense of what's going on with the team's trenches. Between the LinesNext, we'll discuss what players and coaches discussed with us during the post-practice interviews. Bauer will give us what coaches really mean by their comments in our recurring segment "Between the Lines." This week, he'll interpret what running backs coach Stan Drayton meant when speaking about his top running backs, Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton. We'll follow that up with Franklin's comments about the defensive tackle depth chart and where things stand with the d-line heading into the second half of training camp. Finally, he'll dissect what Franklin meant when outlining the team's "slow" start to camp. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDPenn State quarterback Drew Allar is one of the most polarizing players on the team's roster. The senior quarterback is a major driving force behind the program's preseason prediction by many outlets to win the Big Ten Championship. Despite that, parts of his own fan base view him as a limiting factor because of the way he played in big games last year. So, before Penn State has its turn on the stage at the Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis and unofficially kicks off the start of the 2025 season, we're taking one last look back at its performance against Ohio State and Oregon in 2024. Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube to get a rare sneak peek into our premium content as we discuss a series of articles on the site from this week outlining how Allar performed based on advanced data. If you can't catch the show live, be sure to catch the replay on the channel, in this article, or wherever you get your podcasts. Trying to strip away the emotion of a Penn State loss Fans can point to any number of critical plays or turning points in the games against Ohio State and Oregon as the "reason" that Penn State lost. We can also blame the defense, receivers, or other parts of the offense beyond the quarterback. It's an impossible task, but the plan for these articles was to remove those elements and focus solely on Allar's performance in those games. We also try to establish a baseline of comparison for Allar's performance. After all, the Buckeye and Duck defenses were two of the better units in the conference last year. We'll try to establish a baseline of their performance by context and comparison to the rest of the conference, and then compare Allar's performance to how that unit forced quarterbacks to play. Play under pressure and within a pressure environment Next, we'll look at how pressure affected Allar during these two games and the playoffs overall. Pressure means more than one thing. First, we'll look at how Penn State's starting quarterback played with direct game pressure, as in when a defender was about to tackle him in the pocket. Next, we'll try to sniff out the pressure of the moment. Big games create a form of energy in their own right and can affect a player's normal performance. So, we'll look at Allar's play when in a clean pocket and compare that to season averages in both situations. Finally, we'll take that pressure data and compare Allar's playoff performance to his regular season performance.
