Description

Twice a week, Gabe Dunn (he/they) brings you a money show for the weirdos and queerdos -- with an unabashedly radical point of view about finances that will help you fix your life. You won't get rich, but you will feel seen. Gabe, a queer and trans writer and New York Times best-selling author, and their expert guests take down out-of-touch money movies, TV, and books, listen to your personal financial wins and woes, try to better the world for the not-billionaires, and laugh because they just can't cry about this shit anymore. Send a question or voice memo to GabeIsBadWithMoney@gmail.com.

Happy holidays! A sometimes stressful time for couples going into the new year! This week, we're interviewing Kaley Klemp, the co-author of The 80-80 Marriage, about coming at relationships with radical generosity rather than "fairness" and how to structure money in a long-term relationship or marriage. Why do partners resent each others' successes instead of seeing all achievements as good for the team? And how do you still protect your own assets in this kind of partnership? Plus, what is KaJoNa? Then, Gaby talks to dating coach Damona Hoffman about paying for premium dating accounts, the idea of the "gold digger" vs. the "breadwinner" (thanks Kacey Musgraves!) and why she thinks true love is more important than finances in the modern era. This episode is jam packed with fast fashion debates and comments agreeing and disagreeing with the episode Gaby did on the topic. Then, we talk about Biden's last minute student loan repayment pause extension, the end of the child tax credit, and a listener's critique on what really needs to change in the wake of the Amazon warehouse deaths -- tornado safety. Finally, a wealthy woman who is giving away her fortune, the communist urge to wear a jumpsuit every day, and preventing student loan debt by asking colleges to just LOWER tuition prices. Gaby explores the world of fast fashion and greenwashing with Overdressed author and Remake and PayUp activist Elizabeth L. Cline. With all these celebrities shilling for Shein, Fashion Nova, and other fast fashion brands, these companies are gaining into the billions with terrible garment worker practices, huge environmental waste and by stealing designs from marginalized artists. (Okay, that last one is just Gaby's personal pet peeve.) Then, Gaby talks to actress Jasika Nicole (Fringe, The Good Doctor) who makes all her own clothing - yes, even her shoes and undergarments - about why she goes to these lengths, how you can sew your own clothing, and the pros and cons of thrifting. American tax deadlines are coming up and so Gaby talks to Nerdwallet's tax expert Kimberly Palmer all about how to avoid unwelcome tax surprises, getting extensions, what laws changed during Covid, and the overwhelming contradictions of paying taxes. Kimberly talks about how to get organized, what to do if you make a mistake, and what is taxed that you might not expect (debt, for one). Meanwhile, Gaby wonders how you don't just lie down on the floor and wish for death. Then, a listener emails about her fiance being furloughed and the other members of her family that she suddenly feels pressure to support during this time. And finally another listener writes in about all the changes her family is going through while she's on unemployment, with children who need medical attention. Financial guilt and grief abounds. My daughter had a similar experience where her husband of 4 months was run over in a parking lot and she was called to the hospital. She didn't know anything about the finances or how to pay the bills. He survived fortunately but it was a rough time for them.

okay, but it's easy for someone who is rich to say, "If you come into a large sum of money, don't change your spending patterns; just put that money away so it can multiply and work for you." That person was already living a good life because they called afford a high standard of living. It's not fair to ask someone struggling from one day to the next, who eats Raman noodles for dinner more often than not, and who has never had a vacation or traveled or done anything FUN... it's not fair to ask this person to continue living as tho they are poor. There's gotta be a middle ground, one in which you put away SOME of the extra money but still get to go see a movie or buy a book or visit a museum or order some hawt boots or put new tires on your car or move out of the slums or finally be able to buy your BFF a small bday present. These are all things a rich person can do on the reg, and they are so small, so seemingly inconsequential. When we come into a bit of money, I refuse to spend my k

Examines the shame of being poor, helps you accept it and set it aside, and motivates you to improve your financial situation, while also acknowledging the systemic problems that contribute to income inequality. Vulnerable and funny and heartwarming (never thought I'd be using those words to describe a podcast about finances)
