Get Shorty (1995)

Get Shorty's portrayal of Hollywood might feel a little dated over 25 years later but it remains undeniably cool, which is what you'd expect from an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel. Phantom Thread (2017)

Phantom Thread (2017)

2021-06-0901:17:14

I was honestly nervous about this one. It's supposedly going to be Daniel Day-Lewis' final film and I'd heard mixed reviews before checking it out. It's also a movie about the stuffiest of dressmakers which is paced very... precisely. However, thanks mostly to a few incredible performances, it held my interest long enough to get to the moments that set this movie apart. There are some serious spoilers for those moments though so watch the movie, then come back and give our podcast a listen if you're so inclined. Thanks to epicmouthful for commissioning the podcast for Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". It's absurd and hilarious, it's got something to say, but above all else, it's imaginative. I think that's the highest compliment you could pay to the co-writer and director of this film as Gilliam brings his "Trilogy of Imagination" to a close. Lost in Translation (2003)

Lost in Translation (2003)

2021-05-1201:15:05

Thanks to our fan Brady, we’re talking about one of my favorites, Sofia Coppola’s 2003 tale of ennui and self-discovery, Lost in Translation. Come listen to me discuss the early beginnings of my ScarJo crush as well as what makes this movie so personally identifiable to me and to probably everyone. A Knight's Tale (2001)

Today we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of A Knight’s Tale. Even if you’re not a fan of romantic comedies, you’ll absolutely love the other parts of this movie. It contains more star power than any movie has a right to, with the likes of Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, and Mark Addy, and certain unforgettable someone from Breaking Bad. Rain Man (1988)

Rain Man (1988)

2021-05-0501:08:08

Tom Cruise has a problem. His imported car flipping business is failing and he just found out that he has a secret brother who is an autistic savant. But those aren't his problems. His problem is that he's an asshole. But there's a cure for that and it's a movie called Rain Man. Join us for a discussion of this critically acclaimed classic film to hear what we think of it 30 years later. The Verdict (1982)

The Verdict (1982)

2021-04-2801:13:39

The Verdict is a movie about a medical malpractice lawsuit that marks a milestone in Paul Newman's career. Join us for a discussion of this deceptively good film that turns the charismatic leading man into a sad, old, washed up lawyer trying, and perhaps succeeding, to rekindle his life. Amadeus (1984)

Amadeus (1984)

2021-04-2101:04:30

“Amadeus” fictionalizes a rivalry between one of the all-time great composers, Mozart, and the much less remembered Salieri. It has been designated as one of the top 100 movies ever made. Does it hold up in 2021? Check out the podcast to find out what we thought. Basic Instinct (1992)

Basic Instinct (1992)

2021-04-1401:01:121

We were under the mistaken impression that Basic Instinct was a Prestige film, because neither of us had seen it. What we got was a softcore, movie-length episode of Red Shoe Diaries directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. Whether it’s thrilling satire or a satirical thriller, we certainly had quite a bit of fun with it. Gran Torino (2008)

Gran Torino (2008)

2021-04-1201:01:59

At it's heart, Gran Torino is about an old, set-in-his-ways (racist) war veteran realizing that he has more in common with the hardworking, honest Asian family next door than he does with his own spoiled American family. The trouble is, the guy is just so damned racist that it's hard to get comfortable with him. And even when his opinion of the family next door changes, the offensive language he uses to describe them doesn't. Gran Torino is a tough movie to talk about. First Blood (1982)

First Blood (1982)

2021-04-0701:09:38

Ask the average person what they think of when they hear the name Rambo and they'll probably say something about an over-muscled rageaholic murdering dozens of people with weapons meant to be mounted on vehicles. Even if they know better, they'll probably agree that this first movie in the franchise is called "Rambo". Neither of those things is entirely accurate, so we're setting the record straight in a podcast covering one of Sylvester Stallone's best movies. Road to Perdition is the only movie we could think of that features Tom Hanks as anything other than a wholesome heroic type. It turns out he's an honest-to-goodness actor and he can absolutely pull off the Irish gangster dead set on avenging his murdered family, especially when he's sharing the screen with other talented actors such as Paul Newman and Daniel Craig. Who knew! Check out our Club Bald Move page to find out how you can gain access to ALL of our premium content, as well as ad-free versions of the podcasts, for just $5 a month! Our belated obsession with The Queen's Gambit has lead us back to our formative years to cover a movie that also has a young chess prodigy at its center, Searching for Bobby Fischer. The Boxer (1997)

The Boxer (1997)

2021-03-0953:14

I didn't know much about "The Troubles" in Ireland going into this movie and, to be honest, I don't feel like I know any more coming out of it. History lessons aside, The Boxer includes some excellent performances from the entire cast in a movie that is more of a meditation on borrowed resentment than a traditional boxing story. You stop doing a proper Saul podcast during its best season on par with Breaking Bad but have time to bring back a show no one missed and no one watches anymore. Walking Dead is awful and it’s a garbage move.
