Welcome to Basic Teen TV. In our very first season, we will discuss one of the biggest teen tv dramas of the 90's: Dawson's Creek. It's now been over two decades since it's premier and one of us will be rewatching it again for the first time in 21 years while the other is a grown ass woman watching it for the very first time.
In our first episode we are introduced to Dawson, Joey, Pacey and Jen. There were a lot of things I did not remember from these first two episodes and let's be honest from the whole series as you'll find out soon. Also, Victoria was able to quickly defined each character in about 8 words or less. Of course, there was lots of drama because, I mean, how else were the writers and producers going to hook teenagers across the land into the show? DRRRRRRAAAMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Victoria and I discuss episodes 3, 4 and 5 in the second episode of Basic Teen TV and there was A LOT to discuss. We get into the state of relationships between Dawson and Jen, Pacey and Ms. Jacobs and Joey, as well, finds herself a romantic stranger. And then a typical plot device brings almost everyone together to air out all of the drama among our cast of characters of Capeside.
Things kind of blow up in Capeside in these next episodes that we discuss. We've got some love triangles going on. Babies are having babies. Dawson continues to be 100% completely oblivious to Joey's feelings for him. And we see if Pacey's "relationship" with Ms. Jacobs is in it for the long haul. Oh, and there's an homage to one of the great John Hughes films.
The drama swirling around Dawson and Jen and Jen's ex-boyfriends/other love interests is starting to wear on Victoria. We're not all to impressed with the way the show handles teen pregnancy. We've discovered a running theme where older women being inserted in the lives of these teenagers. Can somebody say "mommy issues"??? And Cliff may be suffering from temporary amnesia, we're not sure but maybe. And the show takes a slight break from the usual storylines to put the whole gang in a "I Know What You Did" / "Scream" / all the horror movies scenario where reality and fiction get a little blurry. Dun-dun-duhhhhh...
We've made to the end of Season 1! Woohoo! This brings so much joy to Victoria as we close out all of the drama of the Capeside gang but not without some CLIFFhangers. LOL! So it's been more than a hot minute since our last episode. I mean it's been nearly a whole year but we are finally back. Season 2 of Basic TV = Season 2 of Dawson's Creek. We are headed back to Capeside and Victoria is the most excited about it!
We are back in the idyllic town of Capeside where we are quickly introduced to two new characters, Andy and Jack. Dawson's parents try to live in an open marriage. Jen finds a new friendship in mean-girl, Abby. The whole gang plays house for an econ class. And at the end of episode 3 of Dawson's Creek we get a surprise return from someone we thought we'd never see again!
Please welcome Cyndi to the show. A girl who's also never seen Dawson's Creek like Victoria and I'm also not sure if she even actually watched it for this podcast. Just kidding! We are so happy to have Cyndi on as our third host and she is so excited to jump into the Capeside drama. In her words, this podcast is about to get TURNT!

It is a huge coincidence that as we release this episode we are still in Pride month. While episode 13 felt like a fluff episode, the next two episodes we discuss this week are steeped in the topic of homosexuality as one of the major characters, Jack comes out and admits to everyone that he is gay. While we make light of things we should be more sensitive to, we are strong allies with the LGBTQ community. Celebrating Pride doesn't end in June, it keeps going always and forever. We are in the home stretch of Season 2 of Dawson's Creek and shit is getting real. To the three of us, these episodes feel like the most serious episodes where the things get pretty heavy for most of the characters in Capeside. Jack is working on coming out to the rest of Capeside, Joey and Jack try to navigate their new relationship, Andie is off her meds, meanwhile Dawson just seems to be in a constant state of existential crisis. But it gets even more real when someone dies! But who is it???

And our world is going through some stuff right now, one of them being a pandemic which has separated us but we still came together, socially distanced, for Basic Teen TV! Me and the girls are back talking about Season 3 of Dawson's Creek and in the words of Cyndi, these first three episodes were a doozy! It was an insane shit show!
We quickly follow up with the second episode and continue on with The Fever Dream. Strippers are still in our lives, Joey doesn't know how to deal with this while also dealing with a manager who is an HR nightmare, and Andi comes homes from her time in the mental institution, Jen is on the cheerleading squad and Jack joins the Capeside Minutemen football team.
And here is the final installment of The Fever Dream. There is major drama surrounding the PSAT's and we just do not get it but Eve is definitely the one stirring the pot here.
We kind of found these next three episodes to be a snooze-fest. Each member of the Capeside gang is dealing with their own personal drama. Jack struggles with putting his life out on display with Dawson's documentary, Andi is worried that she's going to found guilty of cheating on the PSAT's, poor Joey has to put up with her horrible boss at the gas station for boats, Henry is given a bigger role and is crushing hard on Jen, and EVE!!! Eve is back and her story was the biggest plot twist to come out of these sleeper episodes! Could she be Jen's half-sister?!?!??
So these next episodes were a tiny bit more exciting. The show has done another marvelous rip-off...this time of The Blair Witch Project but we all agree that the episodes that kind of take the gang out of the usual drama are always more fun. One of the big questions comes out of the Thanksgiving Day episode - did Jen fart or was it a Pacey boner??? Jack is still struggling with this sexuality and what it means to be a gay man out in the world. And the foursome of Jen, Pacey, Joey and Dawson all go to dance class.
