Description

Grounded in the topics that distract host Kate Kennedy (entrepreneur, author, pop culture commentator) on a daily basis, Be There in Five explores all facets of popular culture in a thoughtful, analytical, editorialized, and comedic format. Kate covers a wide range of topics reflecting the current zeitgeist, i.e. celebrities, bloggers/influencers, social media, and tv/moves/music, but also focuses on the humor found in reexamining the 90s/00s zeitgeist as an adult, from AIM to Zenon. Whether musing about how so many 24-year-old bloggers have 5 kids and millions of dollars, poking holes in popular self-help gurus advice, deep diving about influencer/social media scandals, or explaining Taylor Swift's clue-dropping marketing strategy, Kate aims to dive into the topics everyone's talking about in chat rooms that don't get represented in newsrooms. (And by chat rooms, she realizes it's not 1999, but it sounded more quippy than online forums and Facebook groups). Beyond the more lighthearted topics, Kate is also a seasoned entrepreneur (of her namesake company Be There in Five) who is honest about her struggles in real-time and invites her listeners along as she, too, is trying to make it as a 30 something living in Chicago. Above all else, Kate started this podcast to champion lovers of pop culture by taking the guilt out of guilty pleasures. By speaking about the zeitgeist in an intelligent, unique, and humorous way, she hopes to assure listeners that these topics have value, contribute to society, and the only naïve people are those who refuse to acknowledge their influence.

Sexy, Cana?

2021-05-2202:25:02

This week, Kate discusses a topic that combines her interests in both weddings and purity culture by reading listener-submitted stories about church-mandated pre-marital counseling, something she had a particularly interesting experience doing. This counseling is often done not by clergy members but by random married couples at the church. Without curriculum regulation, married couples teach engaged couples how to be married based on their personal anecdotal best practices, and the results range from quite troubling to absolutely hilarious, depending on who you get. Not meant to be offensive, just to share experiences about something that is mandatory for many couples, and has potential, but often underdelivers with archaic recommendations for gender roles, birth control, finances, etc. Enjoy!Support our sponsors!Allform is offering 20% off all orders for our listeners at Allform.com/bethereinfiveButcherBox is offering new members a free BBQ Bundle in their first box– That’s 2 NY strip steaks, 6 burgers, and 5 lbs of drumsticks all for FREE in your first box. Fearless (Taylor's Version)

2021-05-1302:21:05

This week, Kate reviews Taylor Swift's Grammy-winning, iconic sophomore album, Fearless. She examines it both from the lens of nostalgia for when it first came out and also details her reaction to the new version released April 9th. From her favorite songs, to opinions on improved re-records, to favorite vault songs, to [shocking] emotional reflections on when she first heard these songs, Kate dives into the album like it's brand new. Beyond that, she hopes to tie it back to the poetry that lies within choosing this title for her first re-record; perhaps the most Fearless act of all- TS going out of her way to re-record all of her music and take back what's rightfully hers. Today's episode is a really fun bonus interview featuring Laura Tremaine (host of 10 Things To Tell You, author of "Share Your Stuff. I'll Go First.") Laura recently wrote a 'guidebook to life-giving conversations for deeper relationships' that is designed to help you identify unique details and anecdotes from your own life and cultivate genuine connections with others. These connections, of course, can only be made if you do one thing first: share your stuff. Kate and Laura talk about a variety of things, from her upbringing, to her time in the mom blogging world, to why people aren't comfortable sharing, ot the importance of going deeper with friendships, to church camps, magical moments, examples from her book, Troop Beverly Hills, and more! Cheugy School Dropout

Cheugy School Dropout

2021-05-0702:30:091

This week, Kate takes on a new term, "cheugy," a made-up word from Tiktok that, via aggressive media coverage, has been thrust into the social lexicon. This episode examines the struggle between being lighthearted/letting comedy exist and the diversity that lies within financial security of millennials that is often forgotten when slinging semi-classist tropes. She dives into the definition of cheugy, attempting to validate the concept of being 'off-trend' by examining which items named were actual trends, and if this legitimately is a term that would be fairly applied across genders and social classes. Fearing the reincarnation of society's love for terms like 'basic,' Kate argues why there is millennial sensitivity to the early 2010s trends, and what Pinterest, bloggers, early influencers, etc. did for women. And as a result, the ways in which their entrepreneurial efforts are often dismissed in favor of mocking their hobbies. TLDR, it's cheugy as hell. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSYou can try OSEA risk-free for 30 days and get free shipping on orders over $50. They even send free samples with every order! What Would Jesus Brew?

What Would Jesus Brew?

2021-05-0102:25:361

In this episode, Kate does an unforeseen spinoff mini dive into something that wasn't on her radar until recently: highly instagrammable shake/smoothie/tea/coffee shops that are secretly tied to an MLM. With data showing that these 'nutrition shops' lose thousands annually, they have widely become known to be a covert recruiting tactic for Herbalife that are posing as mom & pop shops in small towns and cities alike. With minimalistic branding, instagram-friendly backdrops, little to no ingredient transparency (but appealing drink names), friendly staff, and financial incentives to share on social media, these storefronts provide all the ingredients for the thing Kate hates the most: a manipulative enterprise that preys on vulnerable people in the name of help, nutrition, religion, success, or any abstract characteristic that a person is both unqualified to make and deceptive in their solutions. At one point there is a tangent into numerology & Pythagorus’ (of pythagorean theorem fame, obv) cult, but, par for the course on this show. Kate also reads e-mails from listeners who wrote in to spill the tea they once unknowingly drank. In this (now) trilogy exploring the world of self-help 'mogul' Rachel Hollis, Kate reads a handful of listener emails and walks through the 4-part Venn diagram she's been building since October, mapping the similarities between cults, conservative religions, multi-level marketing schemes, and large-scale self-help gurus that hold conferences like Rachel Hollis and her former 'hero,' Tony Robbins (remember, "I own you?"). In the first hour, Kate reads emails while analyzing Rachel's RISE conference and how the format compares to historical examples of known manipulative marketing strategies (e.g. low-key mind control). She walks through the psychological tactics tied to her former 'hero,' like aggressively teaching psychotherapeutic concepts in his favor (reframing, limited beliefs), resurrecting trauma, using NLP, hosting LGATs, etc. After many listeners reached out asking for more time to write in, she decided she'd air this episode first, but part 3 will be all e-mails. Overall, Kate's exploring her hypothesis that she can link many large-scale self-help & motivational speakers to being deeply rooted in some form of hybrid MLM/evangelical preaching/self-development movement, that when used for nefarious reasons can turn into cults, but best case turn into snake oil empires making professional manipulators and paraphrasers into multimillionaires at the expense of our mental health, preying on generations of vulnerable people who are being told (and sold) that they are 'Made for More.' A Rachel Hollis deep dive. In this episode, Kate dives into the recent controversy surrounding the self-help empire of Rachel Hollis, who is a wildly successful motivational speaker, podcast host, CEO of Rise (and formerly HollisCo), among other things, but is probably most well-known for being the author of NYT best sellers "Girl, Wash Your Face" and "Girl, Stop Apologizing." Kate starts with analysis of the troubling dialogue and caption of her now-deleted video and also now-deleted first apology last week. Then, she discusses the problem with "made for more" culture, especially in the context of the RISE conference and support of the MLM industry that preys on vulnerable people via her prosperity gospel-adjacent business coaching. Then Kate talks through her journey with what she's found troubling about Hollis' content, detailing how she thinks it fits in the broader 2010s self-help zeitgeist of #girlboss culture, and shares her journey in how these movements have shaped her view of feminism and empowerment. In the second episode, Kate will read more listener-submitted emails, wanting to give her take so she can open up the floor to give her yours. From funny/forgotten candle rant youtubers, to her perceptions of Bath & Body Works vs. Yankee Candle vs. Dyptique, to the impact of COVID on the candle industry, aggressive reviews, pretentious descriptions and more -- it's safe to say Kate spends a lot of time *waxing* poetic in this candle-forward episode. First, she discusses Meghan & Harry's upcoming interview, then does a brief Are You Afraid of the Dark detour, followed by reading from old Seventeen & YM magazines she bought off of eBay from their juiciest embarrassing stories sections. From the classic "sorry wrong IM" all the way to a full John Tucker Must Die reenactment, these stories represent the good, the bad, and the delightfully cringy of Livin La Vida Four Loko in the mid-2000s. But first, Kate discusses some broader thoughts on mid-aughts media & pop culture and how it influenced her 'hot girl' days, then her sister Kelly joins her to discuss her participation in an MLM, Valentine's stories, myspace, and more; followed by the two peppering in their bad dating stories as they listen through listeners' quests to go from dull to Pussycat Doll in peak "Don't Cha" culture.MARCH 11 LIVE SHOW TICKETS: onlocationlive.com/bethereinfivePATREON: patreon.com/bethereinfive (access to powerpoint parties, t swift bonus episodes, and more!)INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/bethereinfiveLINK FOR LIST OF RESOURCES AND WAYS TO HELP IN TEXAS: https://www.instagram.com/p/CLZ_dAIHZLk/?igshid=1pbpqdq0d7xm2SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!For a limited time, ButcherBox is offering new members 2 New York strip steaks and 1 pack of bacon for free in your first box. TW: Mention of EDs, body image discussionThis week, Kate has a conversation with Erin Heatherton, a former Victoria's Secret Angel and Sports Illustrated model (among other things) who now lives in Chicago after having stepped back from the spotlight. She's now crushing it as an entrepreneur and somehow befriended Kate along the way, so they recorded a heart to heart about not only Erin's life and career but also about body image, problematic beauty standards, doing Ayahuasca, being in VS shows, dealing with depression, getting back to her roots, and so much more.instagram.com/bethereinfiveGo to patreon.com/bethereinfive for over 100 bonus episodes & access to PowerPoint parties.Start crafting your unique Save the Dates or Invitations with Minted, made custom for you.
