We’re continuing our bumper series of interviews with authors who’ve just released books (that you should absolutely buy…) and this week we hear from Dr James Wright from Triskele Heritage and his work on Archaeological mythbusting. We’re particularly interested in the many claims of pubs having no real proof of their advertised age, as well as how one goes about verifying the claims to begin with. The question always remains, should the truth ruin a great story? A truly fascinating look into building archaeology and what it can reveal.Links:James’ website with book news and blog: https://triskeleheritage.triskelepublishing.com/Buy the book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Historic-Building-Mythbusting-Uncovering-Archaeology/dp/1803994479What we’re drinking:Unteno AF Mango RadlerBlack Iris Brewery - Ale Destroyer New England IPASneinton Cider Company - Fifth ElementBeer Ladies Links: All the beerladies links: https://linktr.ee/beerladiesChristina’s book from Camra: The Devil’s in the Draught Lines - https://shorturl.at/syBFPThe Devil’s in the Draught Lines on Amazon: https://shorturl.at/qLS08Lisa’s Pub Guide: https://www.weirdodublinpubs.com/Thandi’s (occasional) blog: http://www.craftgeeksa.com/ Hosted on Acast. In this week’s episode, Lisa, Thandi and Christina debate an ever-popular topic in beer (and other things!) - ethos. Does the ethos of a brewery influence you to buy, or not buy, their beer? What happens when breweries make good beer, but treat their staff badly, or are divisive in their politics? We chat about a few stories that have been in the news over the last few years, and debate our own feelings on separating art from artist.  Links:James Watt steps down: https://news.sky.com/story/brewdog-boss-calls-time-on-17-years-in-charge-13131591A timeline of Brewdog: https://www.thedrum.com/news/2022/01/24/brewdog-timeline-controversial-brandCommercial deception in Africa: https://www.anthropology-news.org/articles/problematic-brews-commercial-deception-modernity-and-the-pursuit-of-profit/Blue Moon (Coors) settles out of court after appropriation claims: https://www.just-drinks.com/news/belgium-belgian-brewers-resolve-dispute-with-coors-company-to-change-blue-moon-beer-labeling-packaging-and-taps/Osama Bin Lager, Kim Jong Ale and other controversial brews from Mitchell Brewing: https://www.gbnews.com/news/lincolnshire-pub-osama-bin-lager-controversial-beer-mocking-trumpMitchell Brewing website shut down after Osama Bin Lager sparks outrage: https://www.irishstar.com/news/us-news/osama-bin-lager-beer-controversy-32879973Bud Light boycott: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Bud_Light_boycottWhat we’re drinking:Chimay - BruneHope - Hop Off (NA)Beer Ladies Links: All the beerladies links: https://linktr.ee/beerladiesChristina’s book from Camra: The Devil’s in the Draught Lines - https://shorturl.at/syBFPThe Devil’s in the Draught Lines on Amazon: https://shorturl.at/qLS08Lisa’s Pub Guide: https://www.weirdodublinpubs.com/Thandi’s (occasional) blog: http://www.craftgeeksa.com/#beerladiespodcast #beerpodcast #beerculture Hosted on Acast. This week we’re delving into the culture and customs around Irish Pints. Pints in Ireland are not simply having a drink - there are as many occasions as there are colours, and often the Irish customs are led by the occasion, whether wedding, funeral or after-work spontaneous pints. Ali Dunworth has written a marvellous, must-read book called A Compendium of Irish Pints documenting these nuances in a fun,  relatable way, with awesome illustrations by Stephen Heffernan. We’re chatting with Ali this week about the book and sharing experiences of pints. Have you ever wondered whether climate was responsible for beer styles emerging? Well, we did! So we’re digging into it a little - with how regional crops led to some of the styles we know today, and whether there is evidence of climate affecting beer historically. We also chat about how globalisation and industrialisation has impacted beer production and our own expectations, as well as how climate change is already (and will) impact beer of the future. After a short catchup on what’s been keeping us busy, we’re chatting about beer competitions! Especially as our Irish National Competition is coming up on 18 May - and beyond giving you all a taste of what a competition looks like, how it's put together, this is also a big ol’ shout out to the homebrewers, judges and volunteers near and far to come and join us for Nationals. We’re rounding off our Women’s Month special replays with Ulrike from Schneeeule in Germany. Did you know that the style of Berliner Weisse nearly died out? Meet one of the brewers who are keeping it - in its most historically accurate form -alive: Ulrike Genz from Schneeeule brewery in Berlin. Re-Turn: Can Deposit Scheme

Re-Turn: Can Deposit Scheme

2024-02-0901:07:46

On 1 February 2024, Ireland launched the new return deposit scheme called Re-Turn. It’s essentially a recycling initiative, where you pay a bit extra on your cans (and some plastics) and then get it back when you return them to the Re-Turn “vending machines”. Sounds good right? Well… the beer industry has a lot to say about it, as do customers. Nuns & Beer

2024-02-0249:17

It’s St Brigid’s Day in Ireland and we’ve covered her before (S1E14) -but this week we thought we’d give a nod to the other monastic women in brewing, by honouring the nuns that brewed like (and with!) monks. Particularly, we focus on Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century German Abbess who is responsible for many things, including the first (surviving) written history of the use of hops in beer. She sits alongside St Brigid (albeit unofficially) as the patron saint of beer! Also, listen to what Christina and Lisa have been up to. Books! Blogs! We’re kicking off 2024 with a not-so-deep dive into the world of British Bitters; what they are, why they’re different (or not…) to adjacent styles and we tackle perceptions of them. Sadly, they’re not widely available in Ireland. We talk about how different the beer and pub culture are between us and our neighbours, the UK, and this includes Bitter and cask beers in general. What we’re drinking:Eight Degrees Brewing - Sunburnt Irish Red AleBallykilcavan - Brickyard RedLinks:Bitter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_(beer)BJCP guidelines on Bitter: https://www.bjcp.org/style/2021/11/When did ‘bitter’ become the beer style that dare not speak it’s name: https://zythophile.co.uk/2019/04/09/when-did-bitter-become-the-beer-style-that-dare-not-speak-its-name/How one Irishman’s ginger beard helped launch an entirely bogus style of beer: https://zythophile.co.uk/2021/08/25/how-one-irishmans-ginger-beard-helped-launch-an-entirely-bogus-style-of-beer/Beer Ladies Links: linktr.ee/beerladies#beerladiespodcast #beerpodcast #christmasgifts Hosted on Acast. This week we’re talking to Dr Susan Flavin, a food historian who recently has been part of an epic project to recreate a 16th century brewhouse and brew a beer of the time. In this fascinating project - link below - the team used a recipe based on a beer once served in Dublin Castle, in order to not only taste it, but to learn more about the role beer played in the early modern period. This one will tickle the beer history nerds and casual beer fans alike!ICYMI: For the time being, episodes will be posted every 2 weeks. What we’re drinking:Kettlesmith x Woolley Grange -  Alchemy GruitBallykilcavan - Bambrick’s BrownLinks:The FoodCult Project: https://foodcult.eu/Understanding Early Modern Beer: An Interdisciplinary Case-Study: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/historical-journal/article/understanding-early-modern-beer-an-interdisciplinary-casestudy/76C118F73B8D35FED9E5B69CB3E966FBFood and Power in Dublin Castle: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/historical-journal/article/food-and-power-in-sixteenthcentury-ireland-studying-household-accounts-from-dublin-castle/C179A0BBE0E6FA8A4C485727CF093756Susan on Twitter/X: @flavin_susan Beer Ladies Links: linktr.ee/beerladies#beerladiespodcast #beerpodcast #beerhistory #irishbeerhistory Hosted on Acast.
