Beer and Ray Guns

In this episode, Brent and Paul crack open a few cold ones and journey back to 1956 with the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. From Robbie the Robot’s wisecracks to Leslie Nielsen’s pre-Airplane! straight man days, the guys dive deep into what made this groundbreaking film so ahead of its time — stunning special effects, psychological storytelling, and the unmistakable seeds of Star Trek and Star Wars.Along the way, Paul toasts a major life change with a Cadillac margarita (and maybe one too many green drinks), Brent praises the annual return of Oktoberfest beer, and the conversation swerves from naval analogies to quantum consciousness to why “Monster from the Id” still hits hard today. It’s two kind-of-old guys, one legendary movie, and plenty of sci-fi banter — all in true Beer and Ray Guns fashion.

Brent and Paul pop the tops and dive into Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, the 1956 sci-fi classic that mixed Cold War tension, alien invasion, and Ray Harryhausen’s legendary stop-motion effects. From behind-the-scenes stories to eerie parallels with real-world UFO reports, the guys explore what made this film a standout of its era — and why it still sparks questions today. Pour yourself a cold one and join the conversation as Beer and Ray Guns kicks off with a look at the flying saucers that started it all.
