Non-musical history for today: 2003 – Air France retired its fleet of Concorde aircraft. There were a multitude of factors that led to Concorde's retirement – both commercial and safety-related. The aircraft was noisy and extremely expensive to operate, which restricted flight availability and meant that fares were often prohibitively high for many consumers. I think there were other environmental factors, as well. 2005 – Vanity Fair revealed that Mark Felt was "Deep Throat". Deep Throat was the pseudonym given to the secret informant who provided information in 1972 to Bob Woodward, who shared it with Carl Bernstein, which led to the event known as "The Watergate Scandal." Non-musical history for today: 1896 – Nicholas II was crowned as the last Tsar of Imperial Russia. It was just shy of 21 years later that he and his entire family were executed in the basement of their house during the Soviet Revolution by Bolshevik officers. Their remains were found in the late 70s, identified, given proper burials, and exonerated, and Nicholas and his immediate family were granted Martyred Sainthood in the early 80s. Non-musical history for today: 1430 – Joan of Arc was captured at the Siege of Compiègne by troops from the Burgundian faction under the direction of Duke Philip III of Burgundy, aka "Philip the Good." The Burgundians actually lost the siege, but the capture of Jehanne Darc (as she called herself in Middle French) was a major event in the Hundred Years War. She was "found guilty" of heresy and burned at the stake just about a year later. Why do I think of Jane Wiedlin when I think of her? I know the answer, do you? Let me know. Non-musical history for today: 2016 – EgyptAir Flight 804 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea while traveling from Paris to Cairo, killing all 66 people on board (passengers AND crew). In 2022, it was reported that the fire likely was caused by one of the pilots smoking a cigarette, which burned out of control when exposed to oxygen leaking from a cockpit oxygen mask. Non-musical history for today: 1953 – Approximately 7,100 brewery workers in Milwaukee performed a walkout, marking the start of the 1953 Milwaukee brewery strike. A. Gettelman Brewing Company, Independent Milwaukee Brewery, Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Miller Brewing Company, Pabst Brewing Company, and Valentin Blatz Brewing Company all saw their workforce walk off the job. Valentin (one of the smaller breweries) started negotiating with the unions, which led to the workers eventually winning the strike and the members voting to accept new contracts that addressed many of their initial concerns.
