My guest on today's show, Dr. Patrick Hanaway is one of the world's top authorities in the realm of functional medicine. He is a board-certified family physician with a medical degree from Washington University and residency training at the University of New Mexico. He is a past President of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and co-founded Family to Family: Your Home for Whole Family Health with his wife in Asheville, NC. He just last week published a keystone JAMA article on the improved outcomes of patient care with an integrative functional medicine approach, and in 2017, he won the Linus Pauling Award. Ryan Lee (my guest on this podcast) and I go way back. The man is probably responsible for initiating and teaching me just about everything I know in the realm of online marketing and success in the fitness industry. Over a decade ago, I began to delve into his teachings and websites, and it was through him that I learned how to create information products, e-books, virtual coaching and a host of other profit-generating and information-scaling tools I still utilize to this day. Ryan himself is an exercise physiologist and the founder of Rewind bars. He’s also the author of The Millionaire Workout, Passion to Profits, was featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal, and called “the world’s #1 lifestyle entrepreneur” by Entrepreneur. Several years ago, Ryan was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder (psoriatic arthritis), and ignored the advice of his MD to go on chemo, while instead focused on coming up with a psoriatic arthritis diet plan, and simplifying his life, relationships, business, and more. We delve into that story on today's show. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Ryan's journey from fledgling personal trainer to the "godfather" of the online fitness industry [09:15] First job (1994): recreational therapist in a children's rehab hospital; was a personal trainer during non-work hours Internet marketing career began in 1998; writing articles and GIF's on a website Sold training programs to readers -- Craig Valentine assisted Began selling his knowledge to other health enthusiasts to grow their businesses (including Ben Greenfield) -How the online fitness industry has changed since Ryan's early days [13:40] It's much easier to establish an online presence today... and to claim to be a "fitness coach" with little to no real experience Measure an individual by how many people they've helped in real life, not on vanity metrics on social media Double-edged sword: "Real Dealers" can help many more people than the old days -The personal struggle that caused Ryan to take a step back from his business [16:25] Had started a supplement company - Pro Grade Nutrition (affiliate based company) Top affiliate formed his company, and took his friends with him Mother passed; print magazine failed Began eating more; exercising less Began having severe joint pain; no idea about the cause Book: Toxic by Neil Nathan Rheumatologist diagnosed an autoimmune disease (psoriatic arthritis); prescribed chemo as treatment Excess stress directly contributes to leaky gut, autoimmune issues -The steps from debilitating illness to a nearly complete recovery [24:35] Sought out informed docs who could help; Brian Kurtz Psoriatic Arthritis Diet: Naturopathic doctor recommended removing gluten, dairy and cane sugar Elimination diet (see above); within 2 days, noticeable results Began eating gluten, dairy, sugar slowly; stress levels were erratic; eventually was diagnosed with high blood pressure Simplification deep dive: Focus on morning routine Began eating bars (every bar on the planet) Ryan's special salad recipe: Greens (spinach, arugula) Can of sardines w/ olive oil Use bok choy if concerned about oxalate issues in the spinach Fell off the wagon because the psoriatic arthritis diet plan was too strict; eat clean and healthy at least 80% of the time Short-term pescatarian diet was very efficacious Book: Ultrasimple Diet by Mark Hyman Tests for Lyme, mold, mycotoxins came back negative -Lifestyle practices Ryan used to control stress [37:11] Quit traveling to speak at conferences and events Reduced business activities; focused on one company Recommitting to family Simplify fitness Sit in silence w/ deep breathing Book: Principles by Ray Dalio -Reflexology 101 [41:23] Chakras w/ nerve endings on the feet Place tennis ball underneath occipital point in the neck while laying down Rumble Roller Beastie Ball Book: Marma Therapy by Ernst Schrott -Other big wins Ryan has discovered in his recovery [48:49] Entrepreneurs pride themselves on the hustle and grind, much to their detriment Recovery is essential; listen to your body Teach kids hard work, but also rest and recovery iPhone red light trick Safe in the bedroom closet for electronics -The extent to which Ryan is currently involved in the fitness industry [56:01] Focused primarily on the energy bar company "Sneaky greens" -And much more... Today's podcast is a two-part special on ancestral eating, an ancestral diet and healing autoimmune conditions using an ancestral approach. In the first part of the show, I teach you how to determine how you should be eating based on how your ancestors ate.   Next, I turn it over to my guest Dr. Michael Smith for a special lecture from him on his specific protocol for healing autoimmune conditions using an ancestral eating approach.   Dr. Smith, who first appeared on my show in the episode "Cupping, Urine Drinking, Dream Interpretation, Open Heart Surgery Using Acupuncture As Anesthesia & Much More." hails from the First Nations in Canada, grew up on the diet of his indigenous ancestors eating wild organ meats from the animals he hunted and feasting from the wild salmon that he caught.   He learned many of the medicine traditions and the “Medicine Wheel” of the First Nations people. He studied Martial Arts and taught Canadian Military self defense techniques, and along the way, his Martial Arts teacher took him aside to say to tell him that he was “more of a healer than a fighter”.   His teacher then began to teach him the Oral Tradition of Classical Oriental Science, or better known as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Michael is now a huge pillar in the healing community of Nelson, BC. For example, restaurants in the Nelson area will produce a special menu at certain times of year when he holds the event of cleansing season. He's helped with bringing Medical Cannabis dispensaries to the city and produces supplements paired with Cannabis Medicine sold there. You often see him ushering in folks at open public sweat lodge ceremonies with burning of sage. Michael is an author, speaker, professional martial artist, teacher and clinician, and a respected integrative medicine pioneer with over 20 years experience. In his Nelson, British Columbia practice he combines functional medicine and evolutionary nutrition with the ancient wisdom and vast experience of Traditional Chinese medicine. His primary focus in medicine is complex chronic auto-immune diseases (as a patient, Michael had lived with both Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis for well over 20 years). He is a co-founder of the prestigious Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences, the first five year full time doctorate level training program in TCM in Canada. He is also the primary developer of Neuro-Somatic Therapy, a hands on approach to reducing the way people embody distress, illness and trauma. As a Martial Artist, Michael has been training for almost 40 years. He has had the good fortune to train with some of the highest level teachers in the Western world, including a teacher of the late Bruce Lee. After training prison guards, police officers and members of both military and paramilitary organizations, Michael decided to leave traditional martial arts and develop his own approach to resolving physical violence. He has taught this approach, called Applied Combatives, for over 20 years. [23:15] Immune system (police force) views your tissues, cells, etc. are invaders and need to be destroyed (or cause inflammation) Described as a "self-allergy" The "house" illustration to describe autoimmunity The police investigate an incident near your home (they're the T cells) Newscaster (V cells) identify markers for your body Ambulance (phagocytes) clean up dead cells, debris, etc. Fire hydrants (anandamide system) and firemen (adaptive immunity) Snipers (killer cells) MCH1 regulates specific protein pathways in the cells Martial law is the best metaphor to describe autoimmunity -The Standard Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) [35:30] List of "No's": Grains, beans, nuts, seeds, eggs, dairy, nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants) Focus on ancestral eating (thousands of years) rather than just the last 100 years Seasonal component of the diet Mono diets throughout the year are a relatively new idea Grains, beans, nuts, seeds are all plant embryos; eventually reproduce an entire plant More difficult for humans to digest "baby" plants than the mature plants The chemicals inside them are created to defeat the digestive enzymes Eggs and dairy contain enzymes that compromise intestinal permeability -The four Pillars of Ancestral AIP [42:35] Nutrition It's more about good food (solving a problem) Like dating; it's all about what you bring to the table Metabolic resilience and physical fitness Fasting and keto diets are helpful Get mitochondria moving, nerves functioning properly Mindset and mindfulness Mindset sans mindfulness is a misnomer Mindfulness is what sets up the mindset Support (supplements and shamans) People in "blue zones" have good social connection and support Shamans, ayahuasca circles, microdosing w/ LSD, etc. is more and more popular -The four Protocols of Ancestral AIP [54:20] Rest and reset 1-2 weeks is ideal Anti-inflammatory diet (ice age diet) Raw fish, ceviche, raw veggies (in moderation), stews and broths, sea vegetables Lots of water Hibernation (lots of sleep) Low level intensity exercise Meditation, qi gong, sensory deprivation tanks, breath work Epigenetic resets Rebuilding body, brain, mitochondria 1-2 months Nutrient-dense keto diet Nose to tail, connective tissue, intermittent fasting Resistance starch Circuit training to rebuild mitochondria and metabolism Restore Begin adding nuts, seeds, pseudo grains, legumes, see how things go Hormonal and neurotransmitter reserve Cold showers HIIT training Rebalance Homesteader diet Get in the best shape of your life Four fundamental needs as beings: Coherence Adaptability Autonomy Belonging  -And much more... I love to walk barefoot on the grass, but a lot of my neighbors use pesticides for their lawns. I was wondering if I should be concerned about these pesticides getting into my skin or other negative effects on my health. Oftentimes, one of the apps will say that I should take a recovery day, while the other app will say that everything is fine and I can workout as normal. Either way, they're not at all synced with their results. Is there something I should be doing, like new baselines with both of the apps? Any insight would be appreciated. In my response, I recommend: NatureBeat HRV My latest article on HRV Oura Ring The Best Sirtuin Activators Jay asks: I have a bit of a misunderstanding I was hoping you could clear up for me. In your recent podcast with Angelo Keely, you discussed sirtuin-activating compounds. In the same podcast, you also mentioned the Plant Paradox diet and mentioned that sometimes you will put clients on this depending on what they have going on. It was my understanding that sirtuin-activating compounds actually come from natural plant mechanisms that you might be avoiding in the Plant Paradox diet. I was wondering what you might think about this conflict of ideas or perhaps I'm just misunderstanding something? Dr. Thomas Cowan's new book Cancer & The New Biology Of Water is a groundbreaking look at the role of water in living organisms that ultimately brings us closer to answering the riddle of the etiology of, and therapy and treatment for, cancer. When President Nixon launched the War on Cancer with the signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971 and the allocation of billions of research dollars, it was amidst a flurry of promises that a cure was within reach. The research establishment was trumpeting the discovery of oncogenes, the genes that supposedly cause cancer. As soon as we identified them and treated cancer patients accordingly, cancer would become a thing of the past. Fifty years later it’s clear that the War on Cancer has failed―despite what the cancer industry wants us to believe. New diagnoses have continued to climb; one in three people in the United States can now expect to battle cancer during their lifetime. For the majority of common cancers, the search for oncogenes has not changed the treatment: We’re still treating with the same old triad of removing (surgery), burning out (radiation), or poisoning (chemotherapy). In Cancer & The New Biology Of Water, Dr. Cowan argues that this failure was inevitable because the oncogene theory is incorrect―or at least incomplete―and based on a flawed concept of biology in which DNA controls our cellular function and therefore our health. Instead, Dr. Cowan tells us, the somatic mutations seen in cancer cells are the result of a cellular deterioration that has little to do with oncogenes, DNA, or even the nucleus. The root cause is metabolic dysfunction that deteriorates the structured water that forms the basis of cytoplasmic―and therefore, cellular―health. Despite mainstream medicine’s failure to bring an end to suffering or deliver on its promises, it remains illegal for physicians to prescribe anything other than the “standard of care” for their cancer patients―no matter how dangerous and ineffective that standard may be―and despite the fact that gentler, more effective, and more promising treatments exist. While Dr. Cowan acknowledges that all of these treatments need more research, Cancer and the New Biology of Water is an impassioned plea from a long-time physician that these promising treatments merit our attention and research dollars and that patients have the right to information, options, and medical freedom in matters of their own life and death. Dr. Cowan, MD, is a veteran family physician who has studied and written about many subjects in medicine, including nutrition, homeopathy, anthroposophical medicine, and herbal medicine. He is the author of Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor’s Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease and the new book Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness from Chelsea Green Publishing. He is also a founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and a frequent lecturer throughout the US and Canada. He's also the same doctor I mentioned in this Joe Rogan episode when I talked about how your “heart is not a pump”. He also produces some of the most fantastic vegetable powders in existence, which I use every day: Dr. Thomas Cowan's vegetable powders. My previous episodes with Dr. Cowan include: - Why Your Heart Is Not A Pump (& What Most Doctors Don’t Know About The True Cause Of Heart Disease). - How (& Why) To Eat More Vegetables, Why A Plant Is Like An Upside-Down Human, Little-Known Superfood Plants & More! - The Shocking Story Of Vaccines, The Toxicity Of Ultrasounds, Why You Shouldn’t Play With Your Child & Much More With Dr. Thomas Cowan He also published the fascinating article on my website entitled: - The Insulin Of The Heart: A Little-Known Seed Extract That May Be The Future Panacea For Heart Disease. Dr. Cowan's other excellent books include:  Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness Human Heart, Cosmic Heart: A Doctor’s Quest to Understand, Treat, and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Whether or not the efficacy of chemotherapy has ever been studied [7:45] President Nixon announced "War on Cancer" in 1971; promised it would be gone within 10 years Early 1990's, German statistician Ulrich Abel announces 2.9% of stage 3&4 cancer patients see improvement with chemo Early 2000's, Australian government commissions a study for all stages; Concluded that 2.3-2.4% show improvement Decreased quality of life; marginally longer life expectancy in chemo patients -Why a reduction in tumor size isn't always a good thing [12:00] Any study not involving life expectancy is called a "surrogate study" Reduction in size can result in a compromised immune system which perpetuates the need for chemo -Dr. Cowan's thoughts on the current theories upon which modern cancer treatments are based [15:30] "Oncogene" or "somatic mutation" theory came to light in 1971 Mutation in a somatic chromosome, which drives the cancer Actual results: everyone has different somatic mutations Biotech industry is based on finding problematic mutations, which are impossible to decipher After 40 years of war on cancer, over 95% of treatment has nothing to do with the oncogene theory Oncogenes are not the root cause of cancer when you get right down to it Mutations are a consequence of an improperly functioning cell, not the cause of it When you transfer the nuclei from a cancerous cell to a healthy cell, the healthy cell will not become cancerous; however, if you transfer the cytoplasm from a cancerous cell, the healthy cell will develop cancer -Dr. Gilbert Ling and his contributions to current cancer treatments [25:00] All cancers feel different (rock like) compared to other tissue Cells have a charge around them, and when two similarly charged cells come together, they keep their distance Strength of the charge determines the density of the tissue (why different organs have different textures) Halo of charges come from sodium/potassium gradient Always start with the charge: walk barefoot, swim in the ocean, sunlight, expose to heat and cold, mineral water Sodium/potassium pump is a myth "The contents of the cytoplasm are structured water" -The form of water while it's inside the cytoplasm [35:10] It's gel-like, not the forms we usually think It's a mesh that binds to the potassium in the cell, excludes the sodium, and maintains the sodium/potassium gradient Structured water forms similar to Jello ATP molecule acts as the heat that activates the gel (energy currency) Watery matrix the DNA resides in is what determines which part of the DNA will be expressed The DNA is an expression of an "idea" or a creator, and the "idea" is the water -How the integrity of the DNA and cytoplasm is damaged, thus enabling cancer to form [43:15] Cells lose charge, clump together, form a tumor Aneuploidy: the presence of an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell Reversing the loss of charge, restoring the cell would be a more efficacious treatment for cancer than radiation, surgery, chemo, etc. Cytoplasm is akin to the birth of Jesus Christ Lourdes healing water (in France) -Gerson Therapy, Quinton and cancer treatment [50:15] "The problem with cancer is the problem of sodium/potassium" Created a juicer that extracts cytoplasm from fruits and veggies Gerson's protocol was based on increasing potassium, reducing sodium Rene Quinton's sea water (natural way of structuring water) BGF Podcast w/ Robert Slovak Quinton is a mineral-rich water put through a vortex -The reason why Dr. Cowan does not treat cancer patients in his practice [57:45] -How plants and mushrooms are used to treat cancer [59:15] Mistletoe is the most used, most successful natural treatment To be injected subcutaneously Mistletoe is not currently available in the U.S. -Whether deuterium-depleted water could be an effective treatment for cancer [1:03:10] Deuterium (D2O) interferes with ability of mitochondria to generate ATP, and has different physical chemical properties from water Dr. Cowan is disappointed w/ the current state of deuterium-depleted water manufacturers "If you have cancer, or might get cancer, you should drink deuterium-depleted water." -Whether oral or IV administration is optimal for Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) [1:10:15] Oral Birkmayer NADH NADH is better than NAD -The value of electronic devices such as the Rife for treating cancer [1:13:30] -How melatonin is used for cancer therapy [1:15:45] -And much more... Meditation For Mind-Blowing Sex, Meditation For Insomnia, Meditation For Energy & Much More. My guest on today's podcast has cracked the code on what kind of meditation works for all these goals, and for many more. Her name is Emily Fletcher, and Emily is the founder of Ziva Meditation (use code BEN to save $50) and the creator of zivaONLINE, the world’s first online meditation training. Her mission is to make meditation attractive and accessible to people who are ready to up-level their performance and their lives. Recently featured in The New York Times, named top 100 women in wellness to watch and regarded as one of the leading experts in Vedic meditation, Emily has been invited by companies like Google, Barclays Bank, sweetgreen, & Viacom to help improve company performance through meditation. She began her ten years of training in Rishikesh, India and was inspired to teach after experiencing the profound physical and mental benefits meditation provided her during her 10-year career on Broadway, which included roles in Chicago, The Producers & A Chorus Line. Emily has been invited to speak at Harvard Business School, Bulletproof Biohacking Conference, Summit Series, A-Fest and The Omega Center. So far, she has taught over 5,100 people to become self-sufficient meditators with this game changing practice to take with them for life. Stress Less, Accomplish More: Meditation for Extraordinary Performance is a new book by Emily. For the book, she specifically developed a novel meditation technique for working people with busy lives. Now, you can learn to recharge anywhere, anytime – at home or at your desk. All you need is a few minutes and a chair (no apps, incense, or finger cymbals required). But this is not just another meditation book. In it, Emily teaches a cool trifecta of Mindfulness, Meditation, and Manifesting to improve your personal and professional performance, clarity, health, and sleep. You learn how to cultivate Mindfulness through brief but powerful exercises that will help you stop wasting time stressing. Plus, you’ll get Manifesting tools to help you get crystal clear on your personal and professional goals for the future. I'm digging it (and I'm usually NOT a fan of woo-woo meditation books). Get it here. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How the Meditation Shame Spiral undermines efforts at meditation [7:25] Activity: "My brain is too crazy; my stress is special" Time: "I want to meditate, but I just don't have time" Broken promises to self; personal integrity No one has time to waste (return on investment) Stress is responsible for 90% of all doctor's visits Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is related to most disease You're not spending time; you're investing time meditating -Why meditation doesn't replace the importance of quality sleep [13:50] Chemical reactions in the brain to sleep and meditation are very different Nature doesn't allow the human body to be in deep relaxation physically and mentally at the same time Meditation is more relaxing, but is a different type of rest than sleep Curing insomnia is the #1 benefit that people report after starting meditation -Adaptation energy [16:30] Stressors vs. Demands affect your ability to adapt to circumstances When depleted of adaptation energy, you break (straw that breaks the camel's back) We act and react according to the baseline stress levels in our nervous system Meditation doesn't change or remove the stressors; it replenishes our adaptation energy Indicative of higher interplay between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems People are attracted to people who know how to to adapt (higher HRV) Chronic, staying stress is the killer -Whether or not committing to a meditation regimen creates more stress [22:45] If you become self-sufficient with meditation, you'll have more time in your day, and you'll lose dependency on toys, gadgets, etc. Your body will be functioning as it was designed to function -How the anatomical structure of the brain can change with meditation [26:00] Corpus callosum connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain It's proven that meditation thickens the corpus callosum (strengthens the connection) Great way to come up with the witty comeback when it really matters Nootropics has a similar effect -The effect of meditation on our neurons [31:30] -The effects on telomere length [34:35] Book: The Telomere Effect Telomere is like the plastic casing on the end of a shoelace; chronic stress weakens the telomere and impacts the body age BGF podcast w/ Dr. Bill Andrews -The nitty gritty of how Ziva meditation works [37:30] Three "M's": Mindfulness, meditating, manifesting Mindfulness: The art of bringing your awareness into the present moment (not synonymous with meditation) Meditation: alleviates stress from today as well as from the past Manifesting: Your thoughts become things It is inspired by Nishkam karma yoga Nishkam: "hardly taken" Karma: "action" Yoga: "union" "A union attained by action hardly taken" Many modern meditation techniques, apps, etc. are derived from meditation intended for monks; this is why it's perceived as difficult to the busy person Use of mantras: Mantra means "mind vehicle" Transition from left brain thinking to right brain being "The ultimate meditation hack" Don't mistake simplicity for weakness -What is the "super power pose" [54:15] When you're scared or stressed, we start to concave Our emotions respond to our body, and vice versa -What is black pepper tea, and what does it have to do with meditation? [59:06] Put 6-8 grinds of organic black pepper into a mug and pour boiling water over Self-induced fever Would it enhance a sauna experience? In this special episode that is a two-part lecture first by me and second by my guest Thomas DeLauer, you'll discover how to burn fat and build muscle with a minimum effective dose of training, and particularly, you'll learn tips on how to maintain muscle mass and functional athleticism, even as you age. Thomas is one of the leading experts in the world of chronic inflammation as well as the response of the human body to a low-carb diet. He is noted for his personal transformation from a 280-pound overweight corporate executive, to not only being on the cover of health and fitness magazines worldwide but pioneering some of the mainstream awareness of autoimmune diseases and inflammation in general! Thomas has been highlighted in over 20 magazines showcasing his transformation and has been featured worldwide on the cover of Ironman Magazine, Muscle and Performance Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, ICON Magazine, Platform Magazine, and Ironman Japan. His background is in Sports Psychology, although it is this passion for psychology coupled with a career in healthcare as a physician recruiter and owner of an ancillary lab services company that sparked his love for nutritional science and what makes the body tick. I first interviewed Thomas DeLauer in the episode The Ultimate Guide To Quelling Inflammation: Why Your Curcumin May Not Work, Surprising Effects Of Ginger Oil, Vegan Fish Oil Options & Much More! I then interviewed him again in the episode Does Alcohol Really Make You Fat, Which Alcohol Is Healthiest, Hidden Ingredients In Alcohol & Much More: The Ultimate Alcohol Damage Mitigation Guide. Thomas's third appearance was in the podcast episode Magnesium Supplementation: Everything You Need To Know About Dosing Magnesium, Timing Magnesium, Forms Of Magnesium & More! During our discussion, you'll discover: -Sarcopenia: what it is and how to mitigate its effects as you age [6:00] Sarcopenia is when the muscles become smaller and weaker with age Research suggests this is due to the muscle's mitochondria becoming less dense, losing efficiency, etc. Strength training can reverse the mitochondrial decline by nearly 40 years Length of telomeres can reflect that of people 10 years their junior when engaging in strength training Strength training is more efficacious than chronic cardio or endurance training The stronger you are, the more length your telomeres can have -Case studies on the effects of strength training on longevity [10:40] Study on seniors who engaged in strength training showing lower odds of dying Regular exercise reduces risk of early death, CV disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Strength training, racquet sports, swimming, cycling is the killer combo for longevity Charles Uegster on the diet: "Variety is key..." BGF podcast w/ Dr. Michael Smith Laird Hamilton Dr. Daniel Amen Book: Change Your Brain, Change Your Life by Dr. Amen Dr. Mark Sisson does short fast workouts once per week (lift, move, sprint) Article on Don Wildman's "Circuit" workout Tim Ferriss' podcast w/ Art De Vany Olga Kotelko stayed recovered and supple in her old age Key points: Eat natural fats and real food Constantly learn new stuff Lift, move, sprint rather than chronic cardio Put epic things on your calendar occasionally Ensure your training is e-centric Stay supple -Two strategies to maintain and even build muscle with age [20:50] Electrical muscle stimulation on the legs Heat stress "Nerdy Ways to Lose Fat and Stay Healthy" feat. Thomas DeLauer -Keep blood sugar as stable as possible in the morning [29:50] Fasting, keep protein and carb consumption to a minimum Insulin response and taste affects when and how much you want to eat Subconscious desire to eat interrupts our thinking Ingest fats you know will work with your body well Drink MCT coffee with caution -Foam rolling in the morning [33:05] Lymph does not have its own circulatory system (like the heart) Requires muscle contraction to have anything move Fascia is where lymph nodes sit; foam rolling boosts lymphatic drainage Keto Flu intensifies as you liberate more fats Pain receptors trigger BDNF -Strategic use of a sauna [37:40] Heat shock proteins (stress proteins) play critical in folding and unfolding of proteins Protect the cell by stabilizing the unfolded proteins Stressing the body in a sauna for a short time makes other stresses throughout the day seem mild by comparison -Measure HRV based on your workouts [41:10] HRV is a way to analyze the parasympathetic nervous branch of the nervous system Balance between knowing when you're sympathetic and parasympathetic Wear a Whoop or Oura Ring Difficult to differentiate physiological and mental stress -Dry fasting [43:30] Forces the body to obtain water from its own cells Fat cells contain a lot of hydrogen Limited research on its efficacy It may shock the body out of its lethargy -Training in a fasted state [46:10] Fat stores in white adipose tissue, then migrates into intramyocellular triglyceride fat You'll be more mentally acute -Upper body High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) [48:40] Harder for the heart to push blood through the upper body than the lower More of a "perceived" workout -Mess around with different forms of the ketogenic diet [50:10] -And much more... For the past three years, I've been tirelessly toiling behind the scenes to create the book I've personally always wished existed: a complete guide to optimizing the human body, mind, and spirit—written with no stone unturned, no fluff, no “watered down” drivel—just pure, hardcore, practical, from-the-trenches content. I won't lie: nearly every big New York publishing house turned me down for this book. It was too big. (The completed manuscript was over 1100 pages, and we trimmed it down to 608 pages for the final release.) It was too comprehensive. (It wasn't a flash-in-the-pan, pop-culture, buy-it-at-your-airport-bookstore read that someone could get through in a few days then toss and move on.) It was too edgy. (After all, I cover everything from the energy medicine to enemas to crazy sex tips to psychedelics and far beyond.) But nonetheless, I decided to plow forward and write a book that I personally wanted to read and that I've always wanted to write: a big, beautiful, hardcover blueprint that anyone could rely on for years as a cookbook for all things performance, fat loss, digestion, brain, sleep, sex, spirit, happiness, anti-aging, longevity, and much more. (Heck, just the section on longevity covers every molecule in existence that can maximize your lifespan, and is over 173 pages alone!) I call the final result “Boundless: Upgrade Your Brain, Optimize Your Body & Defy Aging,” and you can consider it to be the last book you'll ever need to unlock unparalleled breakthroughs in performance, recovery, sleep, gut health, hormone balance, and much more. In this podcast, Angelo Keely, a former podcast guest you can listen to here and the founder and CEO of Kion, puts me in the hotseat and we reveal a ton of the tips from the book, including hacks, tricks and strategies for longevity, sleep, jet lag, the immune system, fat loss, fasting and beyond. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Ben wrote Boundless [6:30] "A book I've always wanted to write, and to read" Brain, Body, Spirit optimization Beyond Training was largely body focused, but didn't get into brain, spirit, anti-aging components -Who the book is for [10:15] Anyone who wants optimal energy all day long Give ideal combination of lifespan and health span Written based off personal experiences, podcast guest experiences, etc. It's not meant for quick consumption -Why Ben wrote the book the way he did and how a reader should go about consuming it [16:15] It's a blend of time in the trenches and well-researched science Web page for each chapter; references, podcasts, etc. "This book is more of a treasure," something you can explore for months and months -Ben explains the training and diet plans in the book [20:45] Training plans: Beginner: max fitness w/ minimum effective dose of exercise Intermediate: Add a sauna session w/ breath work, cold soak or swim Advanced: Add biohacks (cold thermogenesis gear, holotropic breath work, etc.) There's no one diet that's perfect for everyone, but there are some commonalities among diets: Regular periods of intermittent fasting Low amount of inflammation Periods of fasting and feasting Detox throughout the year Multi-colored plants and spices Diet plans in Boundless: Beginner: Clean up protocol; choose what diet will jump start the body Intermediate: Wahls Protocol, Plant Paradox diet, low carb Mediterranean Advanced: Weston A. Price protocol, paleo diet, ancestral diet Travel: Eating healthy on the go The book is written to allow the reader to determine what is best for their own body, rather than prescribing a solution -A brief overview of the 200+ page chapter on anti-aging and longevity [35:00] Stacs (Sertuin Activating Compounds) Fisetin - plant polyphenol Add Wild strawberry powder to morning smoothie Dark cacao powder Curcumin powder Matcha green tea Combo to increase cellular autophagy: Quercetin Pau d'Arco Glycine Garcinia Chamomile Very multi-modal approach for a proper approach to the topic -Ben's approach to weight loss [46:00] Three steps: Overnight fast Morning cardio in the fat-burning zone Cold shower or cold therapy Supplements to increase conversion of white fat to brown fat Mint essential oil Curcumin Green tea Capsaicin -The best way to read and consume the book [53:25] It's written in order to start from the beginning (begin with fixing the brain) Address each element of your body/life and move to more advanced protocols Fasting protocols are listed in order of importance (getting started to major spring cleanups) John Douillard's LifeSpa  Book: The Longevity Diet by Dr. Walter Luongo  -Hacks for the brain found in Boundless [58:10] Peptide sequences peptidesociety.org Some peptides for the mind are not injectable (CMAX, Dihexa) How to "eat yourself smart" Book: Super Fuel Glycine and Spirulina can protect your brain from effects of canola oil -New hacks for travel [1:06:30] Grounding and earthing Ultimate Longevity BGF podcast w/ Clint Ober Grounding mat Xeno hormesis Astragalus Rhodeola Kion Tian Chi Decreasing inflammation Glutathione before and after travel (Alms Bio) Hydrogen water tablets (Quicksilver, Water and Wellness) Ketones Nose unblocking exercise: Pinch nose w/ fingers Inhale and hold breath (Do while walking for best results) As soon as you need to take a breath, inhale through the nose -Tips for immune system health [1:17:30] -And much more... this man has such an pactful story and such a deep perspective on life. i would live for you to have hin back on your show to talk more about his company startup and deep dive into more of the ingredients and why they mesh together so godly

If we all take an easier path though, is the world fucked? Maybe doesn't bother Ben...

thank you for being so personal and sharing your family and your story. It was very relatable to my father and I, and I plan to share this with him. Your faith is inspiring and I love how you tied it back into your story and even Water. It makes amazing sense. I'm going to go ground myself and figure out how to get good water out of my city's system.

Holy Smokes! Where do I begin? Is it possible to give 10 stars??? I've listened to several hundred podcasts, from several different shows. But over the months, I've gradually stopped listening to most of the others, while focusing my time and attention on Ben's podcasts. Why have I made that change? Primarily, because the topics that Ben presents are practical for real life, and the advice, tips, pointers and ideas can immediately be put into practice, to create a healthier and more fulfilling life. And I also enjoy Ben's zany sense of humor. He makes my daughter's giggle uncontrollably. Well... I thought I had heard just about everything from Ben's show, until podcast #423 came along, featuring Ben's father as the guest. Simply astounding stuff! This was life changing for me. Ben's father certainly shed some new scientific "light" on water, creation and verses from the book of Genesis, (that I have been struggling to understand for many years). THANK YOU SO MUCH for a 10-star podcast, and also for Ben being vulnerable and very REAL during the show with his father. I am using this episode as a means to introduce many new people to Ben's podcast. I just set up a podcast app for someone this morning, and downloaded episodes from Ben the Man. Keep crushing it! Please, keep it coming! Blessings from Jake D'Amico, in Wisconsin, U.S.A.

I really love this podcast and all the knowledge that Ben brings with it, but I would like the episodes to be smaller. I feel like the really important content of each episode is kinda buried deep within a lotta non-essential stuff. But anyway, thank you Ben and please receive my feedback :)

One of the best podcasts ever! You truly approached the aspect of the whole person, body and soul. Brought me to tears! How I wish I had my parents here to thank them, and apologize for the miserable alien being that I was! God love you!

Hackery or quackery? Grounding yourself to the earth sounds like 19th century snake oil.
