It's been a busy week around here, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to hit your ear holes with another dose of Oilers adjacent shenanigans. On today’s podcast, I talked about Ryder and Lisa’s show announcement that will be coming to ON in November, the Oilers’ season opener, and a handful of contract extensions that locked in key pieces on the roster. Between the nostalgia, excitement, and chaos, it’s been one of those weeks that makes you realize how deeply this city lives and breathes both its media and its hockey team. With the 2025–26 campaign officially underway, there’s no shortage of storylines to dive into. Connor McDavid’s extension finally dropped, Mattias Ekholm is sticking around, and Jake Walman secured a new deal to keep Edmonton’s blue line steady for years to come. From roster chemistry to expectations for opening night, I went through it all. Needless to say, there’s plenty to celebrate, plenty to debate, and a whole lot to be excited about as the Oilers get back to business. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and the messages were as varied as they were entertaining. The voicemail is always a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode, because having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.💻 Website: https://oilersnation.com/ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/himynameisbaggedmilk/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jsbmbaggedmilkSHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!👍🏼 Star Mechanical: https://starmechanical.ca/ 👍🏼 Odd Company Brewing: https://www.oddcompany.ca/👍🏼 Sports Interaction: https://www.sportsinteraction.com/oilersnation Hosted on Acast. Nothing like a good news week for our beloved Edmonton Oilers to raise the vibes around here in the hours leading up to the season opener. So when Mattias Ekholm's contract extension was announced earlier this morning, I knew I had to jump on with another emergency pod. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Connor McDavid and Jake Walman signed extensions today and that meant I had to jump on for a quick emergency pod. Am I excited? Yes. Did I swear more than ever before? Also yes. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's Wednesday once again, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap another week of pre-season excitement for the Edmonton Oilers. On today's podcast, I discussed the Connor Ingram trade that happened first thing this morning, a potential long-term extension for Jake Walman, Kirill Kaprizov's new contract, and anything else that's happened over the last seven days. With the Oilers' pre-season finally near its end, we're finally seeing the team get some work done ahead of the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. The problem, of course, is that we're still nowhere closer to a solution on the Connor McDavid contract situation. While it was a quieter week in terms of McDavid news, Kaprizov's massive extension in Minnesota certainly had folks connecting some dots. In other news, Stan Bowman pulled the trigger on a trade with Utah early Wednesday that saw the Oilers sending future considerations to the Mammoth in exchange for goaltender Connor Ingram. Currently, Ingram has been assigned to the Bakersfield Condors, but the move did lead to many wondering what the plan is for the goalies now that Ingram is in the fold. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was very quiet this week, but even so, the messages were as varied as they were entertaining. The voicemail is always a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. It's Wednesday once again, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap another pre-season week for the Edmonton Oilers. On today's podcast, I discussed the start of the Oilers' pre-season schedule, the latest on Connor McDavid watch, Vasily Podkolzin's extension, and anything else that's happened over the last seven days. With the Oilers' pre-season underway, we're finally inching our way toward the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. The problem, of course, is that we're still nowhere closer to a solution on the Connor McDavid contract situation. And while I'm still hopeful and confident that a deal will get done, I'd be lying if I said I didn't think this situation would have been resolved by now. Yet, despite the captain's contract situation lingering, the Oilers did get some work done yesterday with a three-year extension for Vasily Podkolzin. We're also starting to hear some reports that the team is getting close to an extension for Jake Walman, which interests me a lot because I initially thought they'd want to get No. 97 done first. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about my Internet before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quieter this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as they were all over the map. It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap another pre-season week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the start of Oilers' rookie camp, the latest on Connor McDavid watch, Mattias Ekholm wanting to re-sign, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. The Edmonton Oilers are on the ice for the captain's skates, rookie camp is set to launch, and we're inching our way closer to the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. The Oilers' rookies will take on the Flames' rookies this weekend at Rogers Place and then at the Saddledome, and that has me excited to see what our latest crop of kids has cooking. For the big club, we're still waiting for Connor McDavid contract news, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't starting to get nervous about how long this is taking. Sticking with the extension talk, I also went over Mattias Ekholm's desire to remain an Oiler and how I think that's both awesome and a tricky situation at the same time. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about my Internet before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive with nonsense again this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as they were all over the map. It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers being back in town, the latest on Connor McDavid's contract, Dylan Holloway speaking after a year with the Blues, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. With the Oilers players arriving in Edmonton for the captain's skates, it's hard not to get excited about the upcoming season and what our new and old friends will be able to do to avenge a second consecutive Stanley Cup Final loss. Yet, even with the hope of a new season upon us, the only thing anyone around here wants to talk about is whether or not Connor McDavid will sign an extension before the season starts. What started as close to a certainty as you could get has now been clouded with doubt after a run of insiders have suggested No. 97 could start the season without a new deal in place. Obviously, that situation would not be ideal, but if you listen to Jeff Jackson's side of the story, a lot of this noise is much ado about nothing. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about turn signals before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive with nonsense again this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as they were all over the map. It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed Connor McDavid's contract extension, Northlands Coliseum memories, some player retirements, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. There still isn't much happening in Edmonton Oilers land these days, but with Connor McDavid back in town ahead of Team Canada orientation camp, the contract talk has already started to pick back up. Not only did McDavid talk about his potential extension today, but we also heard from Elliotte Friedman on what he expects the timeline to look like for the captain's renewal. Changing gears, I also spent a few minutes talking about the upcoming Rexall Place/Northlands Coliseum demolition that is scheduled for 2026 and how it's going to be sad to see the old barn get knocked down, even though we haven't been there in years. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed Tyler's Ace Race, patiently waiting for Oilers news, extension rumours, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. There isn't much happening in Edmonton Oilers land these days, which meant a very quick recap of the news and stories that happened over the last two weeks. While we still wait for Connor McDavid's contract extension, more insiders are starting to chime in with what they think this new deal is going to look like, including John Shannon's speculation that the AAV will be lower than many expect. I also touched on a recent interview Stuart Skinner gave at NHL.com, where the Oilers' goalie spoke about being confident that the group will be able to respond after a second consecutive Stanley Cup Final loss. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. It's Wednesday smack dab in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another slow news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed some of the wild Oilers rumours, wedding season, the Matthew Tkachuk NHL '26 cover, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. We're smack dab in the middle of the off-season dead zone, which meant there wasn't a whole lot of Oilers news to talk about this week, but I did check off the Edmonton-related items that came across my feed. Starting with what was a busy wedding week for the Oilers, Leon Draisaitl was the big one that everyone was talking about, as many of his current and former teammates congregated in France for the big day. From there, I ran through a list of items from insane rumours to Tyler Wright ending up in Los Angeles to four Oilers being invited to Olympic orientation camp. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a pair of Righteous Sack Beatings before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quiet but mighty this week, and as always, the messages were still as fun as ever. The voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. It's Wednesday smack dab in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another slow news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers' potential extension list, Connor McDavid, Stan Bowman updates on the negotiation, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. With not much going on around the NHL these days, I started this week's podcast with a trip to the rumour mill after Bob Stauffer speculated on Oilers Now that the Oilers could be getting some significant business done over the next month. Of course, nothing Bob said is written in stone, but that doesn't mean I wasn't still able to have some fun with the rumours. Sticking with contract extensions, I ran through the latest rumblings about Connor McDavid's upcoming extension, including potential dollar and term numbers from Frank Seravalli. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about shrinkflation before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. It's Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was a slow news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers' off-season dead zone, Ozzy Osbourne's passing away, TV and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. There's not a whole lot going on in Edmonton Oilers land these days, which meant for a very random episode of BLTN. While the team hasn't done much over the last week, we did get a few interviews from Kris Knoblauch and Stan Bowman that provided some details on where the Oilers are at heading into next season. Either way, we're still weeks away from anything exciting happening barring some kind of trade or Connor McDavid extension, so the's little doubt that the Oilers talk was definitely lighter this week. Did that mean I didn't try to stretch out the news as long as possible anyway? Of course not. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about Uber annoyances before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quieter this week, but the messages were still as fun as ever. As always, the voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. It's the Wednesday after the start of NHL free agency, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another busy week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers trading for Isaac Howard, coaching changes, a big music weekend, and delved into anything else I missed last week while I was away.I kicked off this week's podcast with a recap of everything I got up to last week while I was on holidays, including my trip to Seattle, the concerts I saw, the TV shows I watched, and a throwback to 2002 that's taken over my life. Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I looked at some of the moves and news that happened over the last week and wondered how much is still to come before the 2025-26 season kicks off in a few months. Seeing as the schedule dropped this week, the countdown to the new season is on, and I wondered how close to a finished product the Oilers are as we speak in mid-July.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about Uber annoyances before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quieter again this week, but the messages were still as fun as ever. As always, the voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. It's the Wednesday after the start of NHL free agency, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another busy week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers signing Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year deal, Evan Bouchard's extension, said goodbye to some old friends, and much more.We made it through the NHL draft and the start of free agency, and the Edmonton Oilers were quieter than many fans had hoped they would be, but I wasn't actually all that surprised. Given the lack of tradable assets and minimal cap space available, from my side of the computer screen, I wasn't overly surprised that the Oilers were quiet even though my heart hoped Stan Bowman would pull out some magic. Looking at some of the contracts GMs handed out around the league as the day wore on, I found myself feeling increasingly happier that Stan Bowman wasn't blowing the dollars he had on players like Tanner Jeannot and Cody Ceci. I'm not saying I wanted the Oilers to go out and sign those guys, but my point was that some very mid players locked in for a pile of money. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about overreacting to free agency before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quieter again this week, but the messages were still as fun as ever. As always, the voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. It's the Wednesday leading into the NHL draft and start of free agency, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another busy week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Evander Kane trade to the Canucks, wondered what the Viktor Arvidsson deal will ultimately look like, the Oilers' brass meeting with Connor McDavid's agent, and much more. While I think a lot of Oilers fans thought the team would trade Evander Kane to save some cap space this summer, I don't think many of us expected it to happen this soon, especially not to a division rival like the Vancouver Canucks. Yet, despite the seeming unlikelihood of the deal, Kane announced the trade via his Twitter account shortly after the NHL insiders started to hear rumblings that it was happening. Despite being a solid player, the Oilers desperately needed the cap space the move created, while the sentiment in Vancouver wasn't quite as optimistic. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about plane etiquette before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quieter this week, but the messages were still all over the map. As always, the voicemails are always a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone an opportunity to say their piece. It's the Wednesday after the boys fell to the Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap yet another Edmonton Oilers win. On today's podcast, I examined what went wrong, discussed the Oilers' struggles, Trent Frederic's reported contract extension, and more. It's hard to feel much sunshine the day after the Edmonton Oilers bowed out of the Stanley Cup Final in only six games. After picking up massive OT wins in Games 1 and 4, the Oilers were in great shape heading back to Rogers Place on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the wheels really fell off when the lights got brightest, as the boys were outplayed by a sizeable margin in the following two. The Panthers were so much better in Games 5 and 6 that you almost wondered which Oilers team you were watching. It certainly wasn't the one that stormed through the first three rounds and made things look easy. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about being a sports fan before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was fantastic this week, and the messages were all over the map. As always, I finished up the show with another round of voicemails after yet another disappointing playoff exit. It's the Wednesday after the boys rallied to beat the Florida Panthers in Game 1, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap yet another Edmonton Oilers win. On today's podcast, I looked at the Stanley Cup Final, discussed the Oilers' comeback win, Mattias Ekholm's return, and more.I'm still on cloud nine after last night's Game 1 win, so I didn't really want to spend much time talking about anything other than what happened on Wednesday at Rogers Place. From the Mega Stream kicking off the day to making my way to the rink with Woz to stressing through a very tight game against Florida, everything about Wednesday night was a blast, and I could not be more excited about what the boys can do in the rest of this series. The stars shone bright, the depth came through, Stuart Skinner battled hard in net, and the Oilers ended up with their first Stanley Cup Final series lead in 35 years. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about standing at hockey games before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. It's the Wednesday after the boys took care of the Dallas Stars in Game 4, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap yet another Edmonton Oilers win while also looking at what it means to lose Zach Hyman. On today's podcast, I looked at the Western Conference Final, discussed how the Oilers' depth will need to step up, Mattias Ekholm's potential return, and more.Vibes are high in Edmonton after a big win over the Stars in Game 4 to take a stranglehold on the Western Conference Final, but the victory was not without its costs. Zach Hyman was forced to leave the game early in the first period after Mason Marchment caught him with a hit he wasn't expecting, and the result is that ZMH will miss the remainder of the season and require surgery. Needless to say, this is bad news. On the flip side, if we're going to stay positive, the Oilers are incredibly deep and will need some of those guys to step up and make some magic happen in his absence. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about standing at hockey games before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. It's the Wednesday after the boys dusted off the Vegas Golden Knights, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap yet another Edmonton Oilers series win while also looking back at the week that was. On today's podcast, I looked ahead to the Western Conference Final, examined how the Oilers' depth outplayed the Golden Knights, discussed Mattias Ekholm's potential return, and more. The Oilers are kicking off their third trip to the Western Conference Final in the last four seasons, and that has the city buzzing about whether our boys can get through to the big dance for a second straight season. Standing in their way is a Dallas Stars team that has rolled through the first two rounds, and it will be a significant challenge for our boys to keep their offence at bay. While many of us are understandably focused on Mikko Rantanen's playoff success, a number of Dallas' depth players have been held in check through their first eight wins, and Edmonton will need to keep those players quiet if they want to get through this series. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with a massive round of voicemails. The voicemail was very busy this week, and the messages were all over the map.
