Bigger, Bolder, Braver

Bigger Vision | Bolder Faith | Braver Action A podcast at the intersection of culture, faith and entrepreneurship. It doesn't matter how 'successful' you've already been, so much of what you are applauded for can leave you pretty hollow, and it's too easy to chase after dreams that culture tells you you could or should have, instead of checking in with what lights you up and who you were created to be. That's why this podcast is short, practical and to-the-point because hollow 'success' is no success. Bigger, Bolder, Braver is the podcast which questions the unquestioned 'truths' of how you work and what success looks like for you, according to your deepest held and most sacred values, to craft a life that is richer and more satisfying than the 'norms', 'shoulds', and other noise of society. As you listen, you'll see the toxic narratives in the current culture for what they are, and you'll be inspired to fearlessly carve your own path to live an abundant, satisfying life in all your glory, at a God-designed pace.

When the mask slips...

#53 This episode was inspired by an experience one of my clients had that got me thinking about what we permit when it serves our purposes, and how our permissiveness ends up creating or perpetuating the very culture that hurts. I ask us a few tricky questions here, and I invite you to listen with the willingness to not just point the finger at others, but to quietly dare to check your own heart- as I am doing - and see if you're willing to be honest about where you may have room to grow too. If you'd like to keep the conversation going, let's do that over on my socials @drkathrine. We keep things classy over there, so bring your best self to the conversation and let's wrestle through this stuff together and see if we can't move things in a more healing and wholesome direction.

'All that glitters'

#52 In our social media saturated world, how often are we seduced by well marketed products that press our buttons, make us feel inadequate, or rely on stoking our fears and insecurities to keep us hooked and buying what they're selling? How much have we lost the ability to look beyond the snazzy posts or the words that resonate, to consider the substance of what lies beneath and whether it is as 'glittery' as first appears? As a Christian who hears the same messages promising 'great wealth' from Christian enterpreneurs  if I trust God, this 'glitter' looks an awful lot like what the rest of the world tells me is success, and I got to wondering whether that really is what God deems success from life? This episode dives into a little of my wrangling on this topic of discerning the 'fruit' of what may appear at first glance to be positive, when in reality it is downright toxic and more hellish than heavenly. I hope it helps you too and inspires you to also question whether the substance matches the marketing. To connect with me and find out more about how we can work together, go to www.DrKathrine.com   *Side note: at one point, when I'm talking about someone with a sketchy past, I also refer to it as 'SHADY'. I realise that with my accent it may sound like I swore but I didn't, it was just my accent making 'shady' sound dodgy!!!

Paralympics reflections

#51 - What a delight the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics have been. So many incredible athletes, but I wanted to dedicate this episode to the Paralympics and use my voice - however stumbling it comes out - to champion these exceptional athletes, the new sports I learned about, and the inclusion and education I got through watching people whose lived experience I know nothing about go out there and perform extraordinary athletic feats. It was wonderful.

Creative Retirement

Listen in as I speak with inspirational new author Nell Dorée Townsend about her transition from a 20 year career in dog training, creatively continuing to share her knowledge but in a completely different way!   About Nell: Not one to keep doing the same thing over and over, Nell’s life experiences have been varied. She started out as an Air Force officer and then took on the job of mom and teacher schooling her two boys for the duration (best decision ever). From there she continued with her teaching but with dogs and their people. Now, over twenty years later, she decided to teach via a story. Over the years she shared her life with Millie (Border Collie mix), Duchess (St. Bernard), Blondie (German Shepherd), Major, (Border Collie/Tervuren mix), Boris (Doberman/Lab mix), Jessy (Doberman), Fi (Doberman) and Hobie (Doberman). Her current canine companions are Mae (Doberman) and Eva (German Pinscher). She currently lives in NW Florida with her husband, Mae and Eva. To keep up with new offerings go to nelldoreetownsend.com   Nell's first book, Clara's Wish, is now available on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle. You can buy it here: Clara's Wish   About Clara's Wish: New beginnings sound exciting unless you’re an orphan. Fourteen-year-old Clara Forbes is in a new home, new school and new state. And as the ‘new girl’ in a small town, she is definitely the outsider. She has no friends, and feels like she’s invisible to the world outside her home where she lives with her grandparents. Growing up Clara was never allowed to have any animals but when she learns that her dad’s best friend was a dog, she goes in search of her own for a companion. Taking Baxter in isn’t all smooth sailing as she has no experience and his own challenging past brings numerous struggles. Searching for help she finds a trainer only to be given bad advice. As a result she nearly loses her new best friend. She gave him a second chance at life when she rescued him, and nearly botched it, but he didn’t give up on her. Together they work hard to reach a place of trust and cooperation only to find themselves in a life and death situation. Will their bond and training be enough?     Note: links should be assumed to be affiliate links which benefit me at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting me in using them.

Trained to be dependent

048 - Are you flying free... or in formation? This topic came up when I realised that a client I adore had been conditioned to do as she was told, instead of leaning in to what her gut knew would make her soul sing. That conditioning was shackling her, and once she was free, she was able to switch her business and live with greatly increased joy. If your 'success' feels constrictive and lacks soul-full joy, then we need to talk. Click the link below when you're ready to expect more than going through the motions, and ready instead to blaze your own God-designed trail. Book a call: https://www.drkathrine.com/booking-page

A Different Paradigm

47 - A Different Paradigm The whole way you're set up to work in this world right now sets you up for burnout. The paradigm you're operating in benefits from your inability to rest, your ceaseless productivity and is not built with your long term health nor well-being in mind. Over the past few years, as a Christian in business, I've been looking at whether my business actually is any different because of my faith, or whether it's perpetuating the same patterns and norms of the rest of the world. I got fed up looking at myself and others and not seeing anything that actually required God to show up, let alone get the glory, so I've been on something of a quest for a different way of living that actually involves living richly in all areas, not just the old dolla dolla bills. This episode is a little amuse bouche to introduce the contrast between the paradigm we've currently got and what our good Lord actually intended our pace and perspective on work and life to look like. Hint: they're VERY different. Do hit subscribe because there's plenty more where this came from.   RESOURCES: In this episode I reference my book, Enough., which you can get here:  Enough.   I also reference The Message translation of the Bible which you can get here: The Message Bible   *Note: The above links are affiliate links which benefit me at no extra cost to you. The Burnout Catch 22

46 The Burnout Catch 22 There's something so insidious about a culture that applauds you when you're running yourself ragged and then turns around to critique you when you succumb to burnout. That's what I'm discussing in this episode. The culture is sick, but as individuals who make up culture- and particularly when we're the entrepreneurs and leaders- we in particular can get intentional with our lives to help reshape culture into a healthier shape. I have a free resource to help you flex your 'no' muscles without guilt. Get it here:  https://www.drkathrine.com/elegant-no   If you'd like to learn more about the social messages inpacting you, I have a mini course which is a great introduction to this topic: Click Here   Remember to SUBSCRIBE now so you get each episode as soon as it drops.   And FOLLOW me on socials: Facebook: Dr Kathrine Insta: @‌DrKathrine https://www.drkathrine.com

Style and Substance

#45 Style and Substance What criteria do you use to determine who you listen to? Do you care about substance or is it all about the externals and style? I've been asking myself what I REALLY do and how I want to decide who to give credence to, so here are some reflections that you might find useful for the decisions you have to make. In a world that idolises power, money and fame, how can we choose wisely? I'd love to hear your thoughts and what you want to add to this conversation, so come on over to social media where we can keep the conversation going: Facebook: Dr Kathrine Insta: @‌DrKathrine https://www.drkathrine.com   For more on how I'm making my voting decisions this week, check out this article I wrote on that very topic:  https://www.drkathrine.com/blog/elections-this-week   And of course, SUBSCRIBE to this podcast now so you get each episode as soon as it drops.

Scenic Viewpoints

#041 Scenic Viewpoints   Reassessing your goal mid-journey doesn't make you 'weak' or a 'failure'. If you realise when working towards a goal that it no longer serves you, change it! Don't let pride make you continue the course if your efforts would be better redeployed. You're not the same person you were when you set that goal- don't use it as a rod for your own back because you fear what others might think!    'Savour the journey as well as the outcome' Do you remember to do that in your business? Don't be so focused that you forget to lift your head to look at the big picture!      To be first to hear updates on the launch of my upcoming book sign up here: https://www.drkathrine.com/book-news

Quit Self-Deprecating

#040 The voice you hear most in the world is your own, and when that voice has the drip, drip, drip effect of putting yourself down whether it's defensive or a sort of false humility... it's an issue. It's not helping you, it's not moving you forward. It may in fact be reinforcing the negative things that you already believed about yourself and making the problem worse, making you feel less confident and less able.    Whatever the gift wrap you put on it, you're putting yourself down and you're doing it in front of other people. And you're likely to be meaner to yourself than the others around you would be, so you're creating wounds that never needed to be there because of your own insecurities.    When do you find it tempting to put yourself down in front of others? How can you break this habit? How can you receive a compliment without throwing the gift back in the giver's face?    Listen now for 3 steps to help you break the pattern.    To be first to hear updates on the launch of my upcoming book sign up here: https://www.drkathrine.com/book-news

Special Guest: Susan Fleming

#039    In this episode I am joined by the awesome Susan Fleming to tackle the 'Science of Beating Burnout'.   "Business was never meant to be toxic to the other areas of life. We have learned the wrong way to work in business." -Susan Fleming   "Your passions are not a distraction. Joy is not an indulgence. They're part of what it's supposed to be like! If you're called to business there should be joy in that." - Dr Kathrine McAleese   My special guest Susan Fleming is a Business Alignment Therapist who equips Kingdom Leadership to multiply Legacy, Impact, Freedom, Energy (LIFE) without burnout! She obtained her master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Walden University, and became a fully licensed professional counselor in 2014. After 5 years practicing traditional therapy, Susan realized that psychology was only one piece of the healing puzzle. In her own journey she had incorporated the modalities of psychology, neuroscience, Kingdom assignment, mentorship, and coaching. God revealed to her how all of those beautiful pieces fit together, and that became the framework for her signature Multiplier Method. Business was never meant to be toxic to the other areas of life, but we have learned the wrong way to work in business. Susan's mission now is to impact entrepreneurial culture with a better way to operate in business. She is all about ditching the hustle and working from God's rest. She believes that His intention for us was always partnership, not performance. Susan is a co-author of the #1 International Bestselling book "Just Say No: 14 Transformational Keys to Set Healthy Boundaries in Business and Relationships." She lives in Georgia with her husband, two boys, and her cat named Peter Parker.  To discover more about Susan visit https://www.heaventoearthllc.com

Am I not enough?

#038 Am I not enough?    Productivity has a place. There is dignity in work. But too often our worth can get wrapped up in our productivity and that's not what God intended!    Productivity does not equal worth. Do you believe this? Would those around you agree that you live like you believe this?    Rest is a GOOD thing. Not a weakness. It can be really hard to do, heck it can feel like the very last thing you have time for, but it was designed by God for you and will lead to you being MORE productive!    Are you interested in a Retreat for Introverts? Free from pressure to be productive. Rest and be nourished. Enjoy space. Take off those hats you wear everyday and just BE. Six figures, so what?

#037 The number of zeros you have does not make you a better person. My worth as a coach and mentor, my skillset, my value to you is not solely because I'm a 6 figure business owner.  Excellence is not only measured in a bank account... we can all point to people who are not excellent and who are absolutely financially loaded ! This world gives precedence and power to people who have money. This world loves money. This world loves people who have money. This world will cheerfully turn a blind eye to the less savoury qualities of people who are loaded with a ton of money. That doesn't make it right!  When we worship money we have a problem.  Money is a tool to fulfil a purpose.  Why do you want a 6 figure business? Is it because of the money? The status? What it gives you? If the money itself is the point then I think there's a problem there.  What's the point of your wealth? It's not just so you can indulge yourself. We are blessed to be a blessing. You receive blessings (and you don't need feel guilty or be miserable about that) but it shouldn't stop there. Much will be expected of you. You have the increased capacity to be an answer to the needs of others, to bless others, to invest in other people, to help make this world a better place.  Why do you want to be wealthy? Why do you want that extra responsibility?

Don't go wrong doing right!

#036   You are not an individual in a bubble, unaffected by those around you. You have been conditioned to behave a certain way... but it doesn't always serve you. Be intentional so you aren't like Martha, missing out on what's really important.    Jesus spoke to an individual and also to a culture at the same time. The culture he saw he called out- too busy doing what they 'should' to stop for what's really important.  Sound familiar?

Quit confirming

#035 My passion is helping you see your place as the good Lord intended on this planet but as part of the grander tapestry of history and of eternity; to help you get how much you matter not just because it affects you but because what you do affects other people.  You can get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.  I dare you to be different!

Who wants to be normal?

#034 We are each unique like our fingerprints but there are norms, expectations and labels in our culture... So many assumptions are made about us because of our background, role, gender, colour, religion etc... These may or may not be accurate. They can also be harmful or unhelpful.  Do you want to be 'normal'? Let me ask you: to what end? Will this enable or prevent you from stepping into your God-given place in your life? Remember- you're not just here to make up the numbers!!
