In this episode of Birdman on the Mountain, Rob sits down with Paul Barry of Stone Wealth Strategies to begin a new series centered around Mark Matson's financial philosophy. Before diving into Matson's more recent book, Experiencing the American Dream, Paul takes listeners back to the beginning: Matson's original publication, Main Street Money. Paul shares the story of Matson's early writing efforts—how Main Street Money took years to assemble, and how writing wasn't something Matson naturally enjoyed. For his second book, he even rented an Airstream trailer and parked it near McDowell to isolate himself long enough to complete the manuscript. That dedication resulted in the polished, modern framework that Matson Money advisors now use as a foundational teaching tool. The episode highlights one of the key themes in Main Street Money: having a clearly defined purpose. Paul explains how purpose gives meaning to earning and investing, and why wealth without a purpose often leads to confusion or fear. He shares his own purpose—creating for himself and others the freedom to live without fear—and tells a powerful and personal story of how he fulfilled that purpose for his late wife during her battle with ALS. Rob and Paul also explore the scientific backbone of the Matson investing approach, grounded in Nobel Prize–winning economic research. They discuss Harry Markowitz's modern portfolio theory, global diversification across tens of thousands of holdings, and why concentrating only in the S&P 500—or the "Magnificent Seven"—is not true diversification. Main Street Money provides the origins of the philosophy and science that Mark Matson later refined in Experiencing the American Dream. In upcoming episodes, Rob and Paul will dive deeper into that second book, breaking it down chapter by chapter to help listeners understand the full Matson method for building a purposeful, evidence-based financial life. Birdman visits Pinetop Coffee House and Roasting Company to talk with owner Mike Moffenbier about the "extras" that help elevate a small business. Mike explains that while great coffee is their core product, success comes from layering in complementary merchandise and experiences that reflect and reinforce the brand. He outlines their retail strategy, which includes branded merchandise such as T-shirts, hats, hoodies, mugs, tumblers, and even glow-in-the-dark shirts—all designed to fit the shop's mountain and adventure theme. Alongside that, they sell coffee-related accessories like French presses, grinders, and cups, plus small countertop add-ons like honey sticks, candies, and locally made snacks. Mike shares how they also feature limited food offerings—such as cinnamon rolls, cherry rolls, oatmeal, peanut brittle, and empanadas—sourced from local vendors, ensuring freshness and community support. Managing multiple suppliers, he says, takes coordination but adds tremendous value and character to the shop. They discuss how training and suggestive selling are key: staff are encouraged to offer customizations like extra espresso shots or new syrup flavors, which enhances both sales and customer satisfaction. Pinetop Coffee House carries 40–50 syrups, including many sugar-free options, far exceeding what big chains now offer after streamlining their menus. Specialty and "drink of the month" features help keep customers engaged and coming back. Mike and Birdman also touch on the importance of flexibility in merchandising—working with local printers and vendors to maintain small, adaptable inventory runs—and keeping prices fair for customers. Mike's wife, Linda, manages much of the merchandising and decor, helping create a warm, inviting shop atmosphere that regularly draws compliments. The episode closes with examples of local collaboration, such as a unique "coffee fudge" made by their neighbor, Pine Top Olive Oil Company—an exclusive product for Mike's shop that also drives mutual referrals between the two businesses. Throughout the conversation, Mike emphasizes that success in a small-town shop isn't just about the coffee—it's about community connection, staff engagement, quality, and creative merchandising that all work together to make customers feel at home. Episode Title: The Art and Science of Coffee with Mike Moffenbier Guests: Rob "Birdman" Hephner and Mike Moffenbier Location: Pinetop Coffee House & Roasting Company Theme: Understanding the coffee process from seed to cup 🌱 The Origins of Coffee Mike begins by dispelling a common myth: coffee "beans" are actually seeds from coffee cherries that grow on trees about 14–16 feet tall. Each tree produces only about one pound of coffee per year, emphasizing the massive agricultural scale behind global coffee demand. Coffee grows primarily between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where high altitudes yield denser, more flavorful Arabica coffee. ☀️ Harvesting and Processing Coffee cherries are hand-picked during harvest season, which varies by region. After picking, the cherries are sun-dried on large beds, raked for days until the outer mucilage layer loosens, leaving only the seed — what we call the coffee bean. Some cherries contain a single seed called a "peaberry", a rare variant prized for its unique flavor. 🌎 Fair Trade and Sustainability Mike stresses the importance of Fair Trade Certified coffee, ensuring farmers are paid equitably. Coffee farmers earn an average of about $3 per day, even as global demand and retail prices rise. Organic certification and fair sourcing are core values for Pinetop Coffee House. Coffee is the second-most traded commodity in the world, just behind oil — a reflection of its global significance. Moffenbier also notes the impact of geopolitical and environmental factors like droughts in Panama and conflicts near the Red Sea, which affect coffee transport. 🔥 Roasting and the Craft Each green coffee bag weighs 150–165 pounds and costs about $100,000 per two- to three-month inventory cycle. Mike roasts 20–25 pounds per batch, producing 200–400 pounds per session. Each roast lasts around 30 minutes, requiring constant temperature and airflow management. The roasting process is highly scientific, influencing acidity, aroma, and flavor. It's not automated — it's manually controlled for quality and consistency. After roasting, coffee is ready for sale within two to three days, compared to six to nine months for supermarket coffee — ensuring peak freshness. ☕ Brewing and Extraction The grind size varies by brewing method — coarse for French press or cold brew, fine for espresso, and medium for drip. Extraction is key: balancing time, temperature, and water purity to achieve the desired flavor. Water makes up 97% of coffee, so Moffenbier uses ultra-purified water (99.9999% pure) to maintain consistency and quality. 🥛 The Role of Milk and Alternatives Birdman and Mike discuss how most people add milk or milk alternatives, which can make up 80% or more of the final beverage. Mike explains that steaming milk correctly is an art — the goal is to "pull the sugars forward" to create a sweet, balanced latte rather than a burnt or bitter drink. His staff is trained to understand the chemistry behind milk frothing, ensuring each latte leaves customers delighted. 💡 Education and Appreciation Mike shares how he attended Coffee University during his corporate career, where he learned professional cupping techniques and how to evaluate origin flavors. Birdman emphasizes how conversations like this help people appreciate the craftsmanship behind every cup — and the value of buying local and supporting small roasters. ❤️ Closing Thoughts Mike closes by expressing gratitude to his customers and community, saying that every cup sold supports countless workers worldwide who dedicate years to growing, picking, drying, and shipping coffee. Birdman wraps up by encouraging listeners to stop by Pinetop Coffee House & Roasting Company and taste the difference fresh-roasted, ethically sourced coffee makes. Guests: Rob "Birdman" Hephner and Lanny Croney Location: White Mountain Entertainment – The Village 8 Theaters Theme: Local theater life, movie previews, and the seasonal cinema experience 🎞️ A Look Back: From Winchester to White Mountain Entertainment Lanny recounts how the Show Low theater began as The Winchester, a two-room duplex before being remodeled around 2004–2006 into the Show Low 5. Over time, the Winchester name faded, and the White Mountain Entertainment brand grew — now including both the Village 8 and Show Low 5 theaters. Birdman jokes that it's "a trivia question in the making," giving listeners a nostalgic slice of local film history. 🎃 Halloween Debates & Movie Lineups The two share laughs about Halloween traditions — Lanny insists it's not a holiday, while Birdman jokingly defends his wife's enthusiasm. Their "holiday vs. not-a-holiday" banter sets a fun tone before diving into movie discussions. 🍿 What's Playing & What's New Current Films & Final Runs Tron: Ares – underperforming but still playing; discussion on believability and Jared Leto's "box office poison" reputation. Deliver Me From Nowhere – a Bruce Springsteen-inspired drama, blending story and music. Regretting You, Good Fortune (Keanu Reeves), and Black Phone 2 are all in rotation. Twilight Saga Marathon – all five movies shown over five days, one per night. Animation & Family Features Paranorman, Pets on a Train, and anime hits like Chainsaw Man headline the week. Birdman jokes that "kids will love the chaos" of anime fandom, likening it to Demon Slayer's local success. 👻 Halloween Specials Rocky Horror Picture Show – 50th Anniversary October 31st at 9:00 PM, one show only, $7 tickets. Lanny recalls his Tempe days when Rocky Horror was a wild interactive tradition, but notes this screening will be non-interactive — no throwing props or singing in the aisles (for now). He hints that future plans could bring an official "shadow cast" when they transition to new laser projectors and screens in a few years. K-Pop Demon Hunter Sing-Along A family-friendly animated event running Friday–Sunday (Halloween weekend), with kids encouraged to sing along. Rated PG, with multiple shows each day. 🎥 November & Holiday Movie Lineup Coming Attractions: Nov. 7 – Finding Hozo/Hosen, a new film from Arizona filmmaker Holt Hamilton. Predator: Badlands, a new sci-fi action addition (Disney declined pairing Prey for a double feature). Nov. 14 – Wicked Part 1 returns for a limited run. Nov. 20 – Double Feature: Wicked Part 1 & 2 starting at 11:20 AM for just $10. Holiday Slate Teasers: Zootopia 2, Five Nights at Freddy's (with merch), Wicked the Good, SpongeBob, and Avatar: Fire and Ash all set to carry the season through December. 🎟️ Movie Pricing Explained Lanny explains why ticket prices vary: Fathom Events or studio-limited runs dictate premium or regular pricing. Independently booked classic films, like Jaws, can be discounted to $5 tickets after their anniversary release window. Specialty screenings, like Rocky Horror, are $7, making local entertainment affordable for everyone. 🏆 Awards-Season Talk & Film Commentary Birdman and Lanny transition into awards chatter: "spooky season into Oscar season." They discuss The Smashing Machine, The Rock's UFC drama — Lanny calls it a "good stepping stone" but "not quite Oscar-ready." He praises The Rock's effort but says it didn't hit the emotional or cinematic punch needed for awards consideration. 🎤 Closing Thoughts Birdman thanks Lanny and White Mountain Entertainment for keeping cinema alive and thriving in the White Mountains. They close on a lighthearted note, encouraging listeners to grab some popcorn, enjoy the snow when it comes, and make moviegoing part of their local holiday traditions. Guests: Rob "Birdman" Hephner and Brittany Quintanilla Location: NEXUS Coalition for Drug Prevention, Navajo County Theme: Safe medication disposal, youth outreach, and mental-health awareness 💊 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Brittany introduces National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, held on October 25, as a nationwide initiative to safely dispose of expired or unused prescription medications. Birdman highlights the everyday dilemma of leftover prescriptions—unsafe to toss in the trash or down the drain because of environmental contamination and potential drug misuse. Brittany explains that throughout Navajo County, residents can use secure, anonymous drop boxes at police stations, fire departments, and some pharmacies. The process is simple: Remove or mark out personal information on bottles. Place pills in a Ziploc bag before dropping them off. No liquids, inhalers, or sharps (needles) are accepted. The boxes are available year-round, not just on Take Back Day—making every day a safe disposal day. 🧑🏫 Youth Prevention & Community Outreach Brittany shares that NEXUS is starting a new grant year with expanded prevention education in the Pinetop–Lakeside and Show Low areas. She teaches life-skills and prevention programs such as Lion's Quest at Blue Ridge Junior High (reaching ~120 eighth-graders) and Show Low High School (nearly 200 students). Topics include the dangers of vaping and underage drinking, helping youth make informed, healthy decisions. 💚 Mental-Health Advocacy Birdman notices the positive-message stickers at NEXUS—"Prioritize Mental Health," "It's Okay to Not Feel Okay," "Talk a Little Kinder to Yourself Today," and "You Are Enough." Brittany explains that these stickers include QR codes linking to local mental-health resources, making help easy to find. Both emphasize that mental health underpins substance-abuse prevention, and open dialogue is key to stronger, healthier communities. 🤝 Closing Message Brittany encourages the community to take advantage of the permanent drop boxes and to reach out to NEXUS for prevention resources and support. Birdman wraps up with thanks to Brittany and NEXUS for their ongoing work in education, mental-health promotion, and public safety. The 2026 Arizona Youth Survey (AYS) is coming up! Conducted every two years by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission in partnership with ASU, this survey asks 8th, 10th, and 12th graders statewide about substance use, attitudes, and other behaviors. (azcjc.gov) Why Participate? Only takes one class period, is administered electronically, and is completely anonymous. Principals get data for their own school to see what's really happening locally. Understanding both risk and protective factors helps schools tailor programs where they are needed most. Findings can help schools and local agencies justify the need for grant-funded programs. Quick facts: Registration is now open for the Spring 2026 administration. Survey can be completed any day between January 26, 2026 and May 15, 2026. Targets 8th, 10th, and 12th-grade students across all 15 Arizona counties. Collects information on substance use, student attitudes, and other factors that help young people make healthy choices. Only principals can see the data from their specific school. Birdman stops be the Pinetop Coffee House to chat with the owner Mike Moffenbier. Mike Moffenbier – Pinetop Coffee House & Brewery Mike Moffenbier, owner of Pinetop Coffee House & Brewery, is not only a passionate entrepreneur but also a proud U.S. Army Veteran. His dedication to service—both to country and to community—shines through in the way he runs his business. Under his leadership, Pinetop Coffee House & Brewery has become far more than a place to grab a cup of coffee or a pint. It's a community hub, a gathering space where locals and visitors come together to enjoy craft coffee, small-batch beer, good food, and genuine connection. Mike's background as a veteran instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, teamwork, and commitment—values that continue to guide his approach to business and community involvement. He actively supports local events, collaborates with chambers of commerce, and opens his doors to community gatherings, helping Pinetop-Lakeside remain vibrant and welcoming. For Mike, it's about creating a place that blends quality, hospitality, and local pride, while continuing his lifelong commitment to service in a new way—through business, friendship, and community.
