In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be talking to Dr Emily Contois,  an Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa specializing in how identities are formed at the vital intersection of food, the body, and ideas about health. She is the author of “Diners, Dudes, and Diets: How Gender and Power Collide in Food Media and Culture” and co-editor of “Food Instagram: Identity, Influence, and Negotiation”. Today we will be diving into the intersection of gender norms and food choices. We will discuss how women are socialized to choose light dainty foods like salad whereas men are encouraged to eat hearty meals like steak and potatoes. We will be discussing the sneaky ways that diet culture and the food industry plays to these norms (ie. how foods are marketed to women vs men). We’re gonna talk about the “cool girl” story arc in TV and film (think Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls) and how that can be really damaging to young women’s relationship with food and their body. And I’m going to leave you with some actionable tips on how to reject these gendered food expectations which may specifically come in handy during the holidays when food judgement is at an all time high.References:https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/14/11/2240https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-011-0022-5https://19thnews.org/2022/09/poll-healthcare-lgbtq-medical-discrimination/https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15534510.2015.1008037https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0001879107000437 Check in with today’s amazing guest: Dr Emily Contois, Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa. Follow at @emilycontois Website: https://emilycontois.com/Diners Dudes and Diets: https://www.amazon.com/Diners-Dudes-Diets-Collide-Culture/dp/1469660741Food Instagram: https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Instagram-Identity-Influence-Negotiation-ebook/dp/B09YDNDK87 Disclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, we get to sit down with ex-NXIVM cult member, Sarah Edmondson. Sarah is the star of the hit HBO series, The Vow, the author of Scarred, and the co-host of the podcast, A Little Bit Culty. In this episode, she details the extreme low calorie diets and exercise regimens that members of Keith Raniere’s NXIVM cult were instructed to follow. We discuss the role of diet restriction in cults and control, how wellness MLM’s use similar tactics as cults, and I will be leaving you with a list of red flags that your diet or wellness routine might actually be operating like a cult.Don’t forget to Please subscribe on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts and leave us a review! In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, and today we’re talking with anti diet dietitian and fellow podcaster and author, Christy Harrison about wellness culture grifters. We’re going to be talking a lot about how wellness culture is co-opting intuitive eating, along with the rise in different dubious diagnoses and spurious cures including leaky gut, chronic candida and adrenal fatigue. We’ll be diving into how pseudoscience wellness programs focus their efforts on cancer patients and other vulnerable people. We’re talking about wellness MLMs and why the vast majority of supplements out there are poorly manufactured and kinda BS - and why the business model may actually be making you less healthy.  And finally, I’ll be leaving you with some harrowing last thoughts about the real causes of health inequalities (aka. The social determinants of health) and how wellness culture depends on us simply ignoring them.Check in with today’s amazing guest, Christy Harrison! Website:  https://christyharrison.com/Instagram: @chr1styharrison https://rethinkingwellness.substack.com/Food Psych Podcast: https://christyharrison.com/foodpsychRethinking Wellness Podcast and Substack: https://rethinkingwellness.substack.com/Anti-Diet Book: https://christyharrison.com/book-anti-diet-intuitive-eating-christy-harrisonThe Wellness Trap Book: https://christyharrison.com/the-wellness-trap 🥤 Check out my 2-in-1 Plant Based Probiotic Protein Powder, neue theory at www.neuetheory.com or @neuetheoryDon’t forget to Please subscribe on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts and leave us a review! In todays episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I share my eating disorder (orthorexia) origin story, and I speak with my own sister (and clinical psychologist), Dr. Skye Fitzpatrick about how mental illnesses like eating disorders affect and are affected by family members and those in your immediate circle. Skye and I talk about how my eating disorder affected her as a young teen, and how families can often do more harm than good by over-accommodating the individual struggling with mental illness. This can often keep the person who is suffering from mental illness in a place where they don’t have to recover. I leave listeners with a list of dos and dont’s for talking to a loved one about your concerns around their disordered eating, and I also share a script on how you can broach the topic with your loved one.Check in with today’s amazing guest:Dr. Skye Fitzpatrick (my amazing sister!) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at York University..
