Natasha Lance Rogoff is an award-winning TV producer, journalist, and author. As a filmmaker, she executive produced the Russian adaptation of Sesame Street, Ulitsa Sezam, and Plaza Sésamo in Mexico between '93 and '94. As a journalist, she reported extensively on Russia’s underground culture for major media outlets.Natasha joined us to discuss her book "Muppets in Moscow: The Unexpected Crazy True Story of Making Sesame Street in Russia". We had an amazing opportunity to speak with Professors Alejandro Portes y Ariel C. Armony and discuss their book "Emerging Global Cities: Origin, Structure, and Significance." A groundbreaking book that explores the rapid and unexpected rise of certain urban places, reshaping global urban studies. The book identifies a myriad of factors that allow certain cities to become centers of commerce, finance, art, and culture for entire regions. Throughout the book, the authors trace the transformations of Dubai, Miami, and Singapore, highlighting key features that are common to these emerging global cities. Additionally, they contrast these cities with "global hopefuls," which are cities that aspired to attain similar status but faced challenges that prevented them from achieving it. The book concludes with an analysis of Hong Kong, which is currently facing the risk of losing its global status. Estuvimos conversando con la Senadora Colombiana Andrea Padilla, Doctora en Derecho de la Universidad de los Andes y una defensora de los derechos de los animales a través de su larga trayectoria como activista, académica y en política. Ha trabajado desde el concejo de Bogotá y ahora desde la comisión Quinta del senado, donde ha propuesto un paquete legislativo destinado a defender los derechos de los animales. En 2021 recibió el premio "Mujer defensora de los animales" otorgado por la organización Peta Latino. Hoy nos acompaña para hablar sobre su libro "Derecho sintiente. Los animales no humanos en el derecho latinoamericano". Un texto que surge a partir de su tesis doctoral y que en sus 7 capítulos aborda fallos jurídicos en varios países latinoamericanos, en su mayoría en los últimos quince años, y que abordan una variedad de temas como el maltrato animal, el uso de estos para espectáculos como circos, la caza deportiva entre otros.

We sat with Amy Webb to discuss her book, The Genesis Machine: our quest to rewrite life in the age of synthetic biology. Amy is one of the world’s leading foresight practitioners and the founder of the Future Today Institute, a foresight and strategy firm that helps leaders and organizations prepare for complex futures. She is also a professor of strategic foresight at New York University’s Stern School of Business Through her work, she has pioneered a data-driven foresight methodology used by hundreds of organizations and has been referred to by Forbes as one of the five women changing the world. In The Genesis Machine, she talks about the evolving field of synthetic biology, the fusion of biology and computers, and how it can reshape our world in many fundamental ways. Not only has synthetic biology the potential to help address crucial global challenges. It can also make us question some of the fundamental aspects of human life.
We sat with Dr. Dan Werb to discuss his book on the history and rise of coronaviruses, The Invisible Siege. This is a fascinating book that covers decades worth of scientific discovery in the pursuit of uncovering the mechanics of these coronaviruses, and ways to prepare for future threats. The book is divided into three parts, all covering the history and lessons learned from past encounters with these types of viruses. The SARS epidemic of 2003, the MERS epidemic of 2012 and the most recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic of 2019; outlining the building blocks for the technological and scientific achievements that made it possible to mitigate these viruses using testing, vaccines, and therapeutics. The book stays true to the facts, and limits itself to the history of human ingenuity, and the pursuit to understanding the Coronaviridae, a family of RNA viruses from its more innocuous origins to the more pathogenic strains. Dan Werb, PhD. is an epidemiologist and a policy analyst with expertise working in the fields of HIV, addictions, and drug policy. He’s also an assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC Sandiego.

Una mezcla de biografía, crónica, ensayo y crítica acerca de temas relacionados a justicia social y equidad, usando como vehículo sus experiencias personales y profesionales a lo largo de su carrera como jurista, comunicadora, y reina de belleza. El libro cubre una variedad de temas que van desde la dicotomía de los certámenes de belleza, donde se enfrentan los prejuicios de una sociedad machista, con la apropiación progresista de quienes le ven como instrumento para mostrar la importancia del rol de la mujer en nuestra sociedad. Nos habla de los problemas crónicos del sistema penitenciario en Colombia, desde su experiencia trabajando para velar por los derechos humanos de los reclusos. Y nos habla de las secuelas del conflicto armado y las víctimas civiles quienes aprendieron a vivir entre fuego cruzado, los muertos.. El libro da mirada pragmática, crítica, asertiva a nuestro país sobre temas que deberían hacer eco en nuestro día a día, pero que desafortunadamente se pierden entre la indiferencia de una sociedad que ha aprendido a voltear la cara a la injusticia mientras muchos otros la sufren.
Estuvimos conversando con Lorena Salazar Masso sobre su novela, Una herida llena de peces. La obra nos narra la historia de una mujer y un niño pequeño quienes atraviesan el río Atrato en lancha, y hacia un destino trágico. Un destino que se mantiene latente, y amenazante durante el transcurso de la novela y que les alcanza en el clímax de la obra. La novela también cubre una serie de temas que van desde la maternidad, la pobreza, el conflicto armado y las víctimas civiles quienes aprendieron a vivir entre fuego cruzado, los muertos y la indiferencia. Como varios otros libros que tratan de forma directa o indirecta sobre el tema del conflicto armado en Colombia, la narración y sus personajes hacen eco a historias que alguna vez escuchamos o leímos, y que aprendimos a olvidar. Esta es una obra maravillosa y super recomendada.
