We tell women to negotiate harder, lean in, and ask for what they’re worth. But what if the system was designed to make that impossible? Economist Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman calls it the double tax—the compounded price of racism and sexism that drains women of color’s time, money, and energy just to show up and succeed. In this episode, we unpack how that hidden tax shows up at work—from policing what it means to be “presentable” to the unconscious stereotypes women of color navigate before they even get the job —and what it means for the ways women negotiate, lead, and thrive. Anna breaks down the numbers and the stories behind them, revealing why individual fixes aren’t enough and what real equity could look like when we stop asking women to bear the cost alone. Tune in now to learn: Listen in to learn:Just how widespread the “double tax” really is;The deeply ingrained politics of presentability every woman navigates; How biases and stigmas follow women of color throughout their careers; Why building connection is the foundational step we needRelated Links:The Double Tax by Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman - https://annagifty.com/Connect with Anna on LinkedIn- https://www.linkedin.com/in/annagifty/Follow Anna on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/itsafronomics/Follow Anna on Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/itsafronomics.bsky.social/Episode 322, How to be a Leader People Actually Like - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode322Episode 456, How Connection Can Cure What Ails Us - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode456Episode 497, Where Have All the Good Friends Gone? - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode497HIRED: a job search accelerator video course - https://www.bossedup.org/hired/Bossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How are you dealing with our nation’s constant onslaught of frightening news? Witnessing democracy itself under attack has me feeling despair more often than I’d like, and I know I’m not alone. To be honest, talking about job search strategies and leadership best practices feels a bit futile while our nation flirts with fascism.  So, on this episode, I’m taking a look at how we can continue to function when we’re faced with crisis after crisis, day after day.Let’s talk about how we can help—ourselves and others who may be feeling despair, too:How the overwhelm campaign is a deliberate strategy designed to shock us into submission; Why we need to start by checking in with our basic needs; The deep damage of doomscrolling; How the combination of finding meaning and taking action can create change.Related Links:American Psychological Association, Stress in America 2024 - https://www.apa.org/pubs/reports/stress-in-america/2024Frontline interview with Steve Bannon - https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/interview/steve-bannon-3/Vox, “Flood the zone with sh*t”: How misinformation overwhelmed our democracy - https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/1/16/20991816/impeachment-trial-trump-bannon-misinformationAmerican Friends Service Committee, “How allies can defend against ICE raids” - https://afsc.org/news/how-allies-can-defend-against-ice-raidsNational Immigrant Justice Center, “Know Your Rights: If You Encounter ICE” - https://immigrantjustice.org/for-immigrants/know-your-rights/ice-encounter/Episode 293, What 2020 Taught Me (About F-Off Funds) - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode293TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How do you push back against the “overqualified” label in interviews when you’re an experienced leader? The job search is daunting today, to say the least, and when you’re going in with a decade or more of experience, it can be a real confidence-killer, too. Loren Greiff is the founder of PortfolioRocket. She directs her wealth of experience as a recruiter and advertiser to ending “career victimization by elevating, accelerating, and celebrating one executive over 40 at a time.” We talk about how those with significant career experience can reframe and reclaim the job search experience. Shift your job search mindset to rise in the recruitment ranks:How to transition from a passive to an active application approach;Honing in on and clearly explaining your unique unfair advantage; What interviewers actually mean when they say you’re “overqualified”;What to stop doing before and during your interviews to really set yourself apart.Related Links:Episode 523, What Our 2025 Community Survey Reveals About Women, Work, and Burnout - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode523Work with Loren - https://www.portfoliorocket.com/Connect with Loren - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorengreiff/Listen to the “Career Blast in a Half” podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/career-blast-in-a-half/id1670977528Download the “Unlock the Hidden Job Market” ebook - https://programs.portfoliorocket.com/unlock-websiteHIRED: a job search accelerator video course - https://www.bossedup.org/hired/Bossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How can you leverage AI to help you choose, prepare for, and land your next great job? A lot of you are planning or in the thick of the job search right now, and with the ever-increasing AI involvement in company hiring practices, the landscape looks a lot different than even a few years ago. This conversation with Marlo Lyons, a career coach, author, and HR pro with 20 years of experience, is here to help you navigate these choppy, rapidly changing waters. Marlo and I discuss what’s changed (AI interviewers) and what hasn’t (building real connections is still vital). She shares her expert advice on how AI programs can help you not only prepare for applications and interviews, but also uncover a new career that really aligns with your values. The robots can’t do everything for us, but they definitely belong in your toolbox. Get Marlo’s expert tips on how to (and not to) incorporate AI into your job search:How to find your AI-resistant capabilities; Why networking is still a key piece in an AI-driven work world; How to use an LLM like ChatGPT to help you prepare and apply; The kind of resumes AI scanners are looking for;Nailing that first interview with an AI agent.Related Links:Connect with Marlo - https://www.marlolyonscoaching.com/Marlo’s books - https://www.amazon.com/stores/Marlo-Lyons/author/B09BJ8SQ2XThe Work Unscripted Podcast - https://www.marlolyonscoaching.com/podcastHBR, How to Get Hired When AI Does the Screening - https://hbr.org/2025/02/how-to-get-hired-when-ai-does-the-screeningThe New York Times, Trump vs. the U.S. Economy by Ezra Klein - https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/16/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-natasha-sarin.htmlEpisode 519, How to Ace the Interview with an AI Agent - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode519HIRED: a job search accelerator video course - https://www.bossedup.org/hired/Bossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How do you let your humanity shine in the job interview when your interviewer isn’t human? Employers have gone beyond tasking AI to scan for buzzwords in resumes and cover letters—agentic AI now conducts screening interviews, too!If video chatting with a black screen makes you nervous—or prompts outright panic—you aren’t alone. But if you implement the interview prep process I outline in this short and sweet episode, you’ll be ready to take on that artificial interrogator with all the personality, warmth, and expertise you bring to your in-person conversations, too. Here’s what you need to know to feel confident in your AI interview:Why you should mimic the incoming interview style when you rehearse; How to more naturally exude the human traits the bots are looking for;Top AI tools to help you tackle the job-seeking process.Related Links:HIRED: a job search accelerator video course - https://www.bossedup.org/hired/The New York Times, “Welcome to Your Job Interview. What kinds of changes are you seeing from Gen Z and Millennial leaders? Workforce demographics are shifting these days, as more and more Baby Boomers retire, opening up higher-level management and leadership positions that Millennials and Gen Zers are rushing to fill. This wave of next-gen leaders is bringing a tide of change, ditching old ideas of professionalism and proving that bold and authentic is the new standard.Amanda Litman literally wrote the guidebook for this new and decidedly different generation of leaders. “When We’re in Charge” explores why the old ways are fading out and the fresh approach to authenticity, professionalism, and clear communication is going to revolutionize the workplace. In fact, it’s already started.Amanda is teaching a new generation of leaders to redefine leadership on their terms:How to be an authentic leader while supporting your career goals; The many ways the look, feel, and sound of leadership has changed; How what you wear to work impacts your leadership (spoiler: it’s not what you think); What the older generation of leaders can take away from the incoming cohort.Related Links:When We’re in Charge: The Next Generation’s Guide to Leadership - https://www.amandalitman.com/when-were-in-chargeLearn more about Amanda’s work - https://www.amandalitman.com/Connect with Amanda on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/amandalitman/Connect with Amanda on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandalitm/The Wall Street Journal, The Gen Xers Who Waited Their Turn to Be CEO Are Getting Passed Over - https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/careers/gen-x-business-leadership-executives-d74ca6adAn Election Redesign To Restore Trust In Us Democracy - Tianna Epps-Johnson TedTalk - https://www.ted.com/talks/tiana_epps_johnson_an_election_redesign_to_restore_trust_in_us_democracyEpisode 466, How Gen X Navigates Career Change - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode466Episode 516, The Power Pause: Rebranding the Stay-at-Home Mom - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode516LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. When you’re hit with a daunting question in a meeting, how do you reply? In this common situation, it’s normal to panic or blurt out an uninformed answer just to have something to say. Today’s episode dives into the concept of bridging phrases, which can help you pivot professionally. Taking a beat and presenting an honest, if incomplete, response is always going to make you look more competent and confident than mumbling something inaccurate and circling back later to correct yourself. In this quick episode, I share three go-to phrases to help you navigate hard workplace questions with leadership style. It’s time to start bridging—not bluffing—with conviction:What to say when you need to fact-check yourself first; How to respond when you only know part of the answer; The perfect phrase for when you need to phone a friend for help.Related Links:SPEAK UP: an assertive communication course for women in the workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/speakup“Why You Should Pause During Presentations & 7 Ways to Master It” - https://www.maptive.com/pause-during-presentations-ways-to-master-itEpisode 417, The Truth About Women’s Communication at Work - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode417Episode 419, I Was Called “Aggressive” at Work…Now What? - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode419Episode 490, How Do We Unlearn Silence and Voice Our Worth? - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode490Bossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Let’s explore identity and ambition through the lens of caregiving and career.I’ve talked a lot this year about settling into my “baby-making era,” working full-time while raising a toddler and an infant in this tumultuous time of trad wives and girl bosses. There’s a concerning disconnect between what women want and what society thinks of those desires. Joining me to talk about all this is Neha Ruch, founder of The Power Pause and author of the USA Today bestselling book of the same name.Neha is a marketing professional who stepped back from the corporate world to raise her son and become an advocate for women’s autonomy in work and life. We engage in a bold conversation about the problem with binary narratives around motherhood and how a shift in perspective can help us all achieve our goals, both within the home and outside it. Let Neha’s work inspire your career and caregiving journey:What’s wrong with the phrase “stay-at-home mom,”Why the binary choice of being a working or at-home mom is both unrealistic; Why stepping back from your career doesn’t mean giving up your ambition;Tangible ways companies and moms can normalize taking a “power pause”.Related Links:Connect with Neha - https://www.instagram.com/neha_ruch/Get “The Power Pause: How To Plan A Career Break After Kids” - https://www.thepowerpause.com/thepowerpauseLearn more about Neha’s organization - https://www.thepowerpause.com/The 2023 American Mothers on Pause study - https://www.thepowerpause.com/americanmothersonpauseTAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/Follow Emilie on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/emiliearies/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How do you transition from team member to team leader without letting the pressure and power turn you into a bad boss? I interact so often with well-meaning new managers suddenly discovering how different it is to lead the team than to be a member of it. Luckily, we have the wisdom of executive coach and author Sabina Nawaz to turn to!Sabina wrote her new book, “You're The Boss: Become the Manager You Want to Be (and Others Need)” after spending more than 20 years counseling C-level executives and experiencing her own “bad boss” moment. With the uncertain state of the economy right now, money is on most people’s minds. Now is the perfect time to explore why our finances are so much more than “just numbers,” and how intricately emotions and money intertwine. My guest, Aja Evans, is a financial therapist and the author of the new book, Feel Good Finance. After noticing how often people in therapy sessions breeze past their money stresses, she set out to make talking through our financial concerns more commonplace. This one is certain to resonate—Aja’s insights left me feeling like I’d just had a cathartic therapy session myself.Identify your financial priorities and values with Aja’s expert advice:Why we need to consider our childhoods when thinking about money; How we can talk about money with our kids to set them up for their own financial futures; The hefty, wide-ranging impact of financial trauma (and why we need to address it);How to start figuring out our basic needs and making brave changes to get aligned.Related Links:Learn more about Aja’s work - https://ajaevanscounseling.com/Get a copy of “Feel Good Finance” - https://bookshop.org/p/books/feel-good-finance-untangle-your-relationship-with-money-for-better-mental-emotional-and-financial-well-being-aja-evans/21301669Connect with Aja on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ajaetherapy/Listen to Hidden Brain, “Rewrite Your Money Story” - https://hiddenbrain.org/podcast/money-2-0-rewrite-your-money-story/TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. As a leader, how can you tackle disengagement on your team? Employee engagement is in crisis, and it’s costing more than just morale. According to Gallup, only 31% of the American workforce is engaged at work, while a staggering 17% are actively disengaged—cynical, vocal, and dragging others down with them. This unfortunate reality takes a toll on worker mental health, and also poses a full-blown productivity problem, with real financial consequences. In this episode, I unpack the latest findings from Gallup’s workforce engagement surveys and look at how leaders can leverage it as a blueprint for creating meaningful, motivating work environments. From setting clear expectations to building genuine connections and offering real opportunities for growth, we explore the practical ways to shift your team’s momentum.Take a deeper look at what the numbers say about leading your team to maximum impact:What the generational divide in employee engagement might reveal; Why it’s not as simple as blaming remote work for worker disengagement; How expectations create the foundation for a more engaged workforce.Related Links:Book Emilie to speak at your event - https://www.emiliearies.com/Episode 265, How to Set Clear Expectations As a Leader - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode265Episode 376, How to Make Performance Reviews More Effective as a Manager - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode376Episode 407, How to Delegate Without Feeling So Bad About It - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode407Episode 452, Redefining Success: Women and the Fight for a Fair Economy - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode452Episode 483, Can You Be Friends At Work? - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode483Episode 489 How the Cost of Childcare Has Become a Workforce Issue, https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode489Gallup, U.S. Employee Engagement Sinks to 10-Year Low - https://www.gallup.com/workplace/654911/employee-engagement-sinks-year-low.aspxGallup 2025 State of the Global Workplace Report - https://www.gallup.com/workplace/349484/state-of-the-global-workplace.aspxGallup, The Benefits of Employee Engagement - https://www.gallup.com/workplace/236927/employee-engagement-drives-growth.aspxGallup, The Q12 Employee Engagement Survey - https://www.gallup.com/q12-employee-engagement-survey/LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What would happen if you stopped pursuing a career destination and focused instead on the best direction? Too often, we find ourselves checking the “right” boxes to get the best degree and climb the corporate ladder, only to find ourselves unfulfilled as we near the top. There’s something wrong with that picture.Megan Hellerer, the author of “Directional Living: A Transformational Guide to Fulfillment in Work and Life,” joins me to talk about the approach she has adopted and the one she now teaches. Directional living is about recognizing that human beings change over time. It’s about eschewing a Final Destination and the resulting roadmap and instead focusing on what aligns with our lives and goals as we go through life.Embrace Megan’s individualized approach to constructing a fulfilling life and career:Why the American Dream just isn’t serving us anymore; Why we can’t define fulfillment by society’s limiting perception of success; How recalibrating your inner thermostat can help you start living directionally; Why the idea of “failure” is overrated and what to focus on instead.Related Links:Buy “Directional Living: A Transformational Guide to Fulfillment in Work and Life” by Megan Hellerer - https://meganhellerer.com/directional-living-bookLearn more about Megan’s coaching - https://meganhellerer.com/work-with-meConnect with Megan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/meganhellerer/LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What separates a good manager from a great leader—and why does it matter for your career? The important difference between these two mindsets is often overlooked, but recognizing and honing a leadership approach can help land you the promotion, raise, or amazing new job you deserve. In this episode, I share three key dimensions where making the shift from a management to a leadership mindset really lets you shine. Through practical examples and workplace scenarios, I explore how leadership isn't about abandoning managerial skills and their inherent structure—it's about thinking more broadly, connecting more deeply, and pushing for change when it counts. From writing memos to preparing a presentation, anyone can start zooming out, questioning the status quo, and influencing outcomes at a higher level.Think big-picture with these little mindset shifts:The difference between being task-focused and people-focused;The benefits of shifting from execution to innovation; What it means to do the right thing, not just do things right; How to sharpen your leadership mentality in any situation.Related Links:Stanford Advancement of Women in Medicine - https://drive.google.com/file/d/19mNpvWVeiD6yWSZMf42deJqjvZoVqJKj/viewLeadership Development and DEI Training for Teams - https://www.bossedup.org/forteamsHerminia Ibarra on Women and Vision - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBYTlKnLSMk&t=249sEpisode 308, How Women Leaders Can Win in Male-Dominated Workplaces - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode308Episode 344, What Confidence Really Is and How to Cultivate It - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode344Episode 356, How to Think Like a Leader Rather Than a Manager - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode356LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What can you or your organization do to make the workplace more inclusive for people with autism?Recently, RFK Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, attracted considerable criticism following his disparagingly blanket statements about people with autism. Many people in the autism community lead fulfilling lives full of love, joy, and productive work—despite the hapless and hopeless depiction of this population that RFK shared. This is an excellent moment to draw attention to my conversation with Amanda Kelly, the president and CEO of Firefly Autism and one of the founders of the groundbreaking Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce (CNDCC). It’s impossible not to look at our growing talent shortage in this country and ask: why aren’t we hiring neurodivergent and autistic people? In this episode, Amanda dives into how we can all make our workplaces more welcoming for neurodivergent individuals, who make up one-fifth of our population. Whether you’re neurodiverse or neurotypical, Amanda’s jaw-dropping stats and pursuit of equity will inspire you:Learn about the shocking lack of career resources for autistic adults;Discover how organizations can make their workplaces more inclusive, for neurodivergent people and beyond;Break down the ongoing issues of neurodiversity and inequities in diagnosis; Understand the unique gender component of autism and its impacts.Related Links:Firefly Autism - https://fireflyautism.org/Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cndcc.org/Connect with Amanda on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/amanda-d-kelly-d-psych-2b5957a0/RFK Jr., “Autism destroys families” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPxTnX1sgJc“Addressing the ‘Cliff’ for Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder” - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33539916/NYT, “The Dangerous Race to Put More Children to Work” - https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/24/opinion/editorials/arkansas-child-labor.htmlAutism Recovery Network, “Why Is the Autistic Unemployment Rate So High?” - https://autismrecovery.sg/why-is-the-autistic-unemployment-rate-so-high/Episode 390, How to Manage ADHD in the Workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode390TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How could the SAVE Act send us tumbling back to the Suffragette era? This bill that’s pending review in the Senate could jeopardize voting access for up to 69 million American women. It would require all voters to prove citizenship with a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote, which is a big problem for anyone who’s name has changed since birth—including through marriage—as well as anyone who doesn’t have easy access to such documentation. In this episode, I take a closer look at whether the concern from women and voter rights activists across the country is legitimate or overblown. Spoiler alert: it’s worse than I imagined.Make sure you’re in the know about this major threat, including:The specifics of the SAVE Act;The challenges that make this legislation so alarming to women’s and voter rights activists; How you can make your voice heard to prevent this bill from becoming law.Related Links:5 Calls, “Oppose the SAVE Act (H.R. 22) - A Voter Suppression Bill - Passed House” - https://5calls.org/issue/save-act-voter-suppression/Congress.Gov, Find Your Members - https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-memberRead the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act - https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/22Politico, “The House Passed the SAVE Act.
