“OUT OF AMMUNITION” That is the quote to the news media that Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County, Florida is best known for in law enforcement circles. He is our special guest on this week’s episode. Sheriff Judd has a fascinating back ground with more than 40 years on the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. He has been on the national news and highlighted as a true “law and order” Sheriff with a common sense approach to law enforcement, always with the public’s safety in mind. As he begins his 17th year as Sheriff of Polk County, Sheriff Judd’s leadership skills and willingness to work together with his community has allowed him to shape Polk County Sheriff’s Office into a state of the art model. Republican Candidate for Maricopa County Sheriff, Jerry Sheridan, is undoubtedly the most qualified candidate in the race this year. Beginning his career with Maricopa Sheriff’s Office as an 18 year old Corrections Officer, Jerry Sheridan worked his way up through the ranks to the position Chief Deputy and recently retired after more than 40 years with MCSO. To Sheriff Shepherd, law enforcement has been a calling on his life rather than just a career. Starting as a patrol deputy with Gila County, Sheriff Shepherd worked his way up the ranks to the position of Under Sheriff before being elected as Gila County Sheriff in 2012 . Along this journey Sheriff Shepherd took advantage of opportunities to make himself a more proficient officer………becoming a Certified Paramedic, fire arms instructor, baton instructor, commercial airplane pilot, Certified Diver and member of the underwater dive team, as well becoming proficient in the area of IT and policy /procedures. ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAS???.... More like “attempted escapes” from Florence Prison in Arizona. Keyword would be “attempted ”. Failed attempts due to the efficiency of the Florence Prison staff under the leadership of men like our guest today, Director of Operations with Arizona Department of Corrections, Ernest Trujillo. This is the 2nd time Ernest Trujillo has been a guest on the podcast. Be sure to give a listen to the first podcast where Director Trujillo shares his background and the operating logistics of the Arizona Prison System.
Director Trujillo was invited back as a guest to share some of his personal experiences with escape attempts (some fatal for the prisoner and accomplices), as well as riots involving hundreds of disruptive inmates, brought under control only with use of shotgun rounds, teargas, and rubber bullets.

We are confident this 17 month old police dog will be a crime fighting star because he the partnered with the K-9 Trainer himself, Deputy John Munson. The elite K-9 Unit of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has set the standard for Police K-9 Units throughout the country. One of the reasons for this is the cutting edge training that each K-9 team receives. Our guest today is responsible for providing that training. Deputy John Munson is a 29 year veteran with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and has spent the last 25 years as not only a K-9 handler himself, but also the K-9 Trainer. On today’s podcast Deputy Munson shares some of his unique experiences not only with the K-9 Unit, but also as a member of the SWAT team.

DOING HARD TIME!. What is it like inside the Arizona Prison System. Part of law enforcement that we often overlook is what happens after the criminal is arrested, convicted, sentenced, and sent away to a correction facility. After 37 years in the prison system, having started his career as entry level guard and rising through the ranks to the position of Director of Operations for Arizona Department of Corrections, our guest today, Ernie Trujillo, knows something about the prison system. Ernie provides some insight in to the operations, and often times dangers of the Arizona Corrections Department.
WHO KNEW? That a 9 year old boy’s chance encounter with police officers working a traffic accident would eventually lead to his 35 year career as a police officer.
Another fascinating podcast episode with a stand-up, old school cop who retired after 35 years with the Tacoma Police Department in Tacoma, WA.
Jerry Lerum’s exciting and varied career included assignments to patrol, K-9, Traffic Division, Homeland Security, and Homicide Investigations after which he retired with the rank of Lieutenant. Jerry shares some of his exciting experiences as a police officer, as well as his post retirement position as an Organized Crime Investigator for a large scale national retail chain.
Retired Pierce County Captain Pete Carder shares some of the highlights and some of the challenges of his 32 year career with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Dept in WA State. Pete rose through the ranks of the department from patrol deputy, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Chief of a newly incorporated city, and retired with the rank of Captain. Pete retells some of his most challenging experiences in homicide investigations, as well as Officer involved shootings. Pete also candidly shares his new appreciation for everyday of life as he is currently dealing with a recent diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Lots of wisdom to take away from this interview with a well-seasoned cop who served with integrity.
Our podcast guest have included Police Chiefs, Sheriffs, Lieutenants, Sgts, Detectives, etc, but for the most part, when you call 911 with a problem at 2AM they will not be the ones to respond to a call for help. Our patrol officers working the streets every day, taking call after call, will be the first responders to a call for help. Today’s guest is one of those “ground pounders” that we count on to show up when we need assistance. Harold McDonald has worked the streets of Mesa, AZ as a Mesa Police Officer for over 13 years and seen it all. Harold makes it all seem like just another day’s work but it takes a street savvy cop with common sense and a level head to be an effective patrol officer. On this episode Harold shares his insights on Law Enforcement and the importance of seeing a career in police work as more of a “calling” than a job.
PS: At the time of this interview Harold is on light duty in communications due to a shoulder injury he sustained while chasing down and arresting a resisting suspect.
We hear from another “real cop”, Larry Hall, who survived shootings and two riots as a New York City Police Officer. After some years with NYPD, Larry relocated to Arizona and became an officer with Mesa Police Department. At Mesa PD Larry worked patrol, street crimes, and even bicycle patrol before promoting to Sergeant. Larry was then recruited by the Buckeye AZ police department, a growing and progressive community, where he worked his way up the ranks and has now served as Buckeye’s Police Chief for over 6 years. Larry speaks candidly of his philosophy on leadership, dealing with police related stressful situations, as well as his recent challenge as he faced a serious cancer condition.
There are a lot of great Sheriffs out there in our law enforcement world but our podcast guest today in without a doubt “America’s Toughest Sheriff”. Sheriff Joe Arpaio served as Maricopa County Sheriff for 23 years…the longest serving Sheriff in Arizona history. Sheriff Joe is known for his strong stand on illegal immigration, instituting the cost saving “Tent City Jail”, and pink underwear for inmates. On this podcast Sheriff Joe speaks candidly about his time with the DEA in numerous foreign countries as he fought the drug war. Many do not know that Sheriff Joe’s law enforcement career started as a police officer in Washington DC where he walked the beat in the toughest areas of DC. Now after a 4 year break from office, Joe is now running for Maricopa County Sheriff again and describes himself as the “people’s candidate”. With over 55 years of law enforcement experience Joe is obviously up to the challenge.
What a privilege to have my old graveyard patrol partner, Larry Minturn, as my guest on The Boys in Blue podcast. Larry was my mentor and training officer during my rookie year as a Deputy with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Dept. Larry is entering his 50th year on the department (yes, 50 years)……now Lieutenant in the Detective Division. Larry’s experiences throughout his 50 years in law enforcement are so extensive that I made him commit to a Part II podcast at a later date. This episode covers some of his many assignments including Homicide Investigation, Arson Investigation, Child Abuse, and he speaks openly about how he emotionally handled the fatal shooting of a suspect. Include in this podcast are some of our “war stories” that we encountered as we patrolled the mean streets of Pierce County as partners on the night shift….some dangerous and others amusing.
